Why Are Christians So Arrogant?

I was discussing this with a mod the other day, and still in wonderment. Something I've noticed, that Christians have a reputation for being arrogant and opinionated. I think it's an accurate impression, unfortunately. There's a lot of infighting and personal attacking on this very forum, and it sends what must be an awful message to the rest of the world. Exactly the opposite image of Christianity as a movement of love, understanding, and forgiveness, and the opposite of what this forum is supposed to be about to the outside world. So what's up, people?

most of the fighting around here is because of insecurities .. not arrogance.. Judging Christians on being opinionated in a forum where opinions are asked for is some how not right.

I think that it has less to do with a person being a Christian, and more to do with a concept called social privilege. I usually hate the term because it conveys the idea that being a Christian gets you an active advantage. Its actually a more passive advantage. In the West where Christianity is considered the dominant religion and dominant cultural influence when it comes to art media, and laws ( its shifting, but to deny that it heavily influenced the west would be ignorant). This causes an assumption that most people are christian and accept common christian axioms.

So when ideas that conflict with those axioms start to become noticed, its easy to see why "Christians" would arrogantly hand wave away concerns, problems, counter points, or people.

It doesn't fit their worldview, so its not of their concern.

I'm not judging. Critisizing, yes, but for a reason. I posted because I want Christianity to succeed, and I think this holds us back. Even Jesus said that before you remove the splinter from someone else's eye, remove the plank from yours. Opinionated is probably OK, but the arrogance and personal attacking, I'm saying it's not good in what is otherwise the best Christian site on the internet.

What can I say, KevinK asks the hard questions.

I don't know. There are times I'm argumentative, but it's never fun. I have to feel very, very strongly about something to get like that--and I always dread that, heated arguments can literally make me sick to my stomach.
I guess some find it fun to act like they know it all and everyone else is dumb and the attention it brings them, but I don't see how it is.

This is what happens when multiple denominations with multiple Jesus's get together. They debate and argue.

Meanwhile the real Jesus is looking down from heaven thinking 'what on earth are these people doing', literally.

I have a feeling He spends a good part of His day rolling His eyes.

What's wrong with My children; why won't they praise Me?
Am I not King of kings and am I not LORD of lords?
What's wrong with my children; why won't they praise Me?
I've given them everything, but they have no joy.

Did I not roll back the sea, suffer on Calvary?
I'm Alpha, Omega, the Beginning and End.
Though I supply all their needs, they never speak to Me.
What's wrong with my children, am I not their LORD?

Chorus:
What's wrong with My children; why won't they praise Me?
Am I not King of kings and am I not LORD of lords?
What's wrong with my children; why won't they praise Me?
I've given them everything, but they have no joy.

They assemble in My Name and sing of their love for Me;
But the song's not from their heart and I can't hear them sing.
Are they ashamed of Me? Afraid someone will see
if they lift up their hands towards heaven above and give honor to Me?
Chorus:
What's wrong with My children; why won't they praise Me?
Am I not King of kings and am I not LORD of lords?
What's wrong with my children; why won't they praise Me?
I've given them everything, but they have no joy.

I almost always back out of a debate after a day or two. Those who are aggressive tend to take that as a sign of victory, "haha, you can't handle how wrong you are so you're running away, pfft, coward". When really it's just that I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted. Good thing is I usually do take something away from those experiences, some kind of learning.
That isn't just a Christian thing, though. That's people in general. Including people in freaking inconsequential things like fandoms...a couple weeks ago someone was seriously all over my case over a difference of opinion on the timeline for a fictional series. People get really prideful about being "in the know".

^^^Exactly right!^^^ It's so hard to be mature as some interpret it as weakness or admission of defeat. So the thread goes ballistic until someone hits the stop button.

This forum is very relaxed to another general forum where people are insanely abusive and intolerant to others.

Theres usually about 10 atheists on me in Jesus debate, always the same guy wanting to spit in my face and who calls me a moron. This forum is like gold. I come here to relax. At least i dont get called a %*/# moron just for having an opinion. lol.

Yup.
I do try to debate every now and then because I think it's healthy and I enjoy gaining things intellectually. It's mostly the people and being pressured that make it unpleasant.

Guess it's all relative. lol

I posted because I want Christianity to succeed

The religion of Christianity will not succeed.

The Church that He is building, the gates of hell will not prevail against.

Here's a scripture for you to consider.

11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.
12
And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch.
13 Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly.
14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
15
so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. Acts 5:11-15

They so blind in understanding i had to speak a parable using tomatoes to try get a message across about the understanding of what wealth is.

They are so blind in mans system they would believe they are more wealthy than me if we were all stranded on two seperate islands and they had all the gold and money and i had all the food and water. lol.

I try not to be, but the other day I was becoming upset over a discussion, it's not about being right, it's about winning, imo. We hate to admit we're wrong, because of pride.

Would we act like this if we're all in the same room? I don't think we would.

We've also become a social media society, we all think our opinions are important, like if we don't share it someone will miss out on what we have to share. Like right now! :) I read opinions at the end of articles on MSN and I just am shocked at how people treat one another and why do people even take the time out to make a comment in the first place? Millions of people are commenting, their comment is a speck among all of them, it's kind of pointless to comment, imo.

It's not limited to Christianity, although we should be held to a higher standard, right? We're supposed to be acting as Christ and I can't see Him arguing over things that we humans argue over. Do you?

Maybe it's because we're kind of a narcissistic society and social media has exacerbated it?

I don't know, just, yet, another opinion among millions. :)

I hope the next revival that sweeps across these lands contain complete torrents and downfalls of self-revelation, humility and transparency in the body of Christ. Where those three things are lacking, you get bickering, argumentative Christians.
