Simple. To let all Israel know their Messiah had come.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:6–8.
This is their commission. Christ sent His disciples out so that they may seek out the twelve tribes scattered across the then-known world with the message that Israel's Messiah had come.
The Prophecies:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Gen. 3:15.
15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; Deut. 18:15.
The Fulfillment:
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
Jn. 1:31.
Christ is a "Jewish" Messiah. He hails from the tribe of Judah. He was prophesied TO Israel and He came TO Israel. And when He returns again He comes to sit on the throne of David in Jerusalem.
Paul describes the ingrafting of Gentiles to the branch that is Israel. Take note:
7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded 8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. Rom. 11:7–8.
Yes, Israel in general did not accept their Messiah. But those that were ministered to by Christ received Him and became sons and daughters of the LORD. But the tendency in the Church 2000 years going forward believe that Jesus Christ is a Gentile Messiah and this is not necessarily true. Here is what Scripture says:
11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Rom. 11:11.
16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Rom. 11:16–17.
18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Rom. 11:18–21.
To Gentile believers here at Christian Forums and around the world. Know your place. Christ was prophesied TO Israel and came TO Israel. Jesus Christ is a "Jewish" Messiah. Israel is the apple of God's eye. Salvation has come to Gentiles in order to provoke Israel to jealously. And when God has completed His preordained plan in this particular TIME to provoke Israel to jealously God will cease the Time of the Gentiles and turn again His attention TO Israel. And both "Jews" and Gentile believers will go through the Time of Jacobs Trouble together which was prophesied in Matthew 24 and 25 (among other prophetic places in Scripture.) Remember:
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Rom. 1:16.
I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Rom. 11:1–2.
