You might want to look at Matthew 26:52-56.

Kathi over the years I have just about heard it all on this topic, so I want to see what some of you think.

Guess He told to buy some swords so they would look cool.. . how about so they would have them to use..... Jesus 'knew' them He knows our faith... I would guess in those day a knife or a small sword was multi purpose ... from cleaning fish to pointing a stick to cook the fish over the fire... and yup i would say for protection from bad guys who had most likely bigger knifes and swords...

He needed the swords in order to be numbered with the transgressors. He was fulfilling prophecy.

Why did Jesus tell the disciples to buy swords?

Question: Just before his arrest and death Jesus told his disciples to sell their clothes and use the money to buy themselves swords (Luke 22:35-38). Why were the disciples told to buy WEAPONS?

There is nothing wrong with defending the people we care for.

Your answer is right here.

Luke 22
35 And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Hi Lewis,

A knife is useful fort many things, however, as we see from Jesus statement it wasn't to cut people's ears off.

Swords are multi function. But I think that it was pretty clear that it was for defense. I think that the latter part was even more significant, the part about, we have two...it is enough He said. I take this to mean have one for emergencies (exigent circumstances), but don't go overboard with them and let them become more important than ones faith.

Please explain. Defense from what?

I think we need to remember that the word sword is chosen by the translators. The word is used of a knife too. It is the same word that is used when Abraham was going to offer up Isaac and there it is translated knife.

KJV Genesis 22:10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. (Gen 22:10 KJV)

Anything. Beasts, men...sudden attack. There were those who did not like the disciples and would see them dead. Jesus wanted them alive to do His work. A sudden attack on them, like when they were sleeping or wotnot, would have to be a reactionary event. No time to run or pray, just react and defend.

In the text quoted,

Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. Luke 22:36

The word in red has been added by the translators, the correct rendering is, he that doesn't have a purse, a bag to hold money and a script was a bag to hold food, was to sell his clothes and go buy them, the word one is in reference to a knife, not a sword, and we all know how practical it is to carry a pocket knife, ...Jesus had been taking care of them, but now they were to be on their own, ...the practical lesson here for us is found in,

For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 2 Thes 3:10

We are not to be a burden to the Church, we are to work so as to be able to further the advancement of the church with our tithes and offerings while at the same time being able to support ourselves.

If Jesus feared for their safety, why did He tell them to buy just 1 sword instead of 1 for each? He knew they would be going their separate ways once He finished what He came here to do.

Why just 1 sword?

the word for sword, knife is also the same for axe, staff as well.

I think we have a real life instance of the same misunderstanding of Jesus' words as when the disciples said, here are two!

The term "sword" used by Jesus is symbolic. They took it literally, whereas He was speaking symbolically respecting the authority of Gentile nations. This would become abundantly clear after the Day of Pentecost. Jesus was telling them to accept the protection of an ordered Government.

no one that is pro use of self-defense is saying otherwise. common sense. well getting into why we have the bill of rights is another topic and it has a lot to do with what the brittish were doing. do you know what really started that war? a gun confiscation!the battle of Lexington and concord was over the fact the the brits wanted to take the guns from the colonies. that was it for the colonies so we rebelled and formed an ad hoc militia and didn't attack but weren't hiding either.

To answer the OP... this is why:

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (KJV)
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

the word for sword, knife is also the same for axe, staff as well.

My point was that translators choose different words, the original reader read the same word. In the Greek text the reader sees the same thing, in the English text we see different things depending on what the translator believes.
