One question that was on my mind tonight. Why do we have money in the first place and why is it so valuable? What if everything in the world was free? Does anybody know the answer to these?

Let's do a little deep thinking here. These are great questions. What if everything were free? I mean, everything has a cost. If everything were free, some people like entrepreneurs would be losing their resources to produce products that everyone gets for free. Products require resources to make. If people could take as much as they want with no price restraint, they would not leave enough for everybody. Some people may not have motivation to work, but we do see that even a lot in our society (those that purposefully don't better themselves in order to live off of welfare). Realistically everything has a price, even time is a type of cost when you think about it.

Money itself only has "value" because the government says it does. We have printed paper for bills and it doesn't cost that much to make, but it has an assigned value. If I crumpled up a $100 bill and threw it on the ground, would you pick it up? Most probably would because they know it has an assigned value even though it is a bunch of fibers and watermarks.

I suppose people use money...well, I don't know if communism has to do with it or if people just wanted a physical way to pay for goods. Maybe a way to pay others without trading something of heavy value.

Great questions, though!

I will dig up florida history ,the corporate ghost towns .money wasn't used but tokens

Money makes trading things easier. If there were no money, you would have to go to the store with a chicken, and try to trade it for a gallon of milk.

Old florida history and towns were built by men who started mining, lumber yards, muck, farms ,cattle farming ,groves and owned it buy paying their workers with tokens ,these had homes, the place for work ,a company store and also schools and churches . in my county we had fellsmere, broadmoor,Oslo. Of these only fellsmere having not depended on just the farm itself survives, broadmoor is under a few feet if water with its streets and foundations ,with Oslo ,only,a few things remain.

Yes, private money was a thing before 1913. Competition helped keep money honest.
It was done after in florida . my,state wasn't a big population state until the 50s.in fact .Kissimmee was one,ft.drum,Okeechobee had that too a Flagler line .this went from Kissimmee to myakka. This was removed as each business dried up and plenty of those towns vanished . Elvis was inspired by his stay in one to create the song heart break motel.its in kenansville.lot of that had to do with turpentine and lumber yard over cutting versus planting

That is a good point but my question was what if everything was free and therefore if it was free,.. we wouldn't even need to trade anything for anything.

First of all considering the fact that I would most certainly pick a hundred dollar bill off the ground, maybe it also has to do with the fact that our brains are hard wired to see its value. Although I still don't think that it is the most valuable thing in the world.

Second of all I guess if there was no money the crime rates would be up because people would always be taking what they want whenever they want. Then again, it probably wouldn't be considered a crime anymore. Banks would also cease to exist.

That's not right! Oh they did say it has value, but they hoped that the people would believe them. It is the people who give value to money by their willingness to trade with it.

All we have to do is look to the Old Testament to see a moneyless society in action. All assets of the community or tribe were evenly distributed amongst the families according to need (number of family). Everyone worked and got plenty of dinner. There was no need for banks, government, medicaid, food stamps...any of that.

Money is a detestable scourge to mankind upon earth. A society with no money would not mean that everything is free. So if HeisRisen wants an extra case of Resees cups then she can have them but I need some holes in my socks darned up first, lol.

Disagree,God judged isreal for not taking care of the poor.he judged them over things like that in the days of the judges .

If there really were peace on earth and everybody had the compassion in their hearts to give something for nothing than there would be a possibilty that everything would be free. However even though it is an extremely lovely thought, there won't be any peace on earth until Christ returns.

I also realize the fact that I'm sort of derailing my own thread here but would it be considered stealing (or at least to the Lord) if you found a hunder dollar bill or any amount of money for that matter lying on the ground.

I would have to say no unless you saw the person drop it, it was part of a wishing well, or it was a whole entire wallet with a wad full of money. I was just really curious for other opinions.

Disagree,God judged isreal for not taking care of the poor.he judged them over things like that in the days of the judges .

The evenly divide it up system could not have been without extraneous circumstances cropping up over time. Some larger families accrued more assets and I'm sure that some small families struggled, plus I'm pretty sure that men could retire at age 50 back then. These people have to be taken care of. And apparently they did not handle it correctly so were judged for it.

That doesn't mean that the system is flawed, just that we in modern times are hardwired from birth into a different and monetized system. Which is unnecessary.

No. How could it be?

Probably not because you found it. My last point had me thinking about another question though since when Jesus was born I do believe the angels mentioned peace on earth and that sort of goes together with people expecting something in return if somebody wants something from them or if they did something nice for them.

If there truly was peace on earth, wouldn't everybody just be kind to everyone out of the goodness of their hearts? There would also be nobody robbing anybody else and threatening them of bodily harm for money. It just made me think why money means so much to us and whose idea it was in the first place to trade goods for it?

But of course. Mankind fell and have been deteriorating ever since. So they created bean counters and gave you an account and me too. Money made people to stop looking to God for their sustenance.

And the teachings of Jesus clearly tell us that, it is more blessed to give than it is to receive. And it is with that heart that the poor, retired and infirm folks would not ever lack for anything. So...the no money society would work...but someone let in the bean counters so not in this lifetime on this earth.

Also, for the record I was also thinking about the peace on earth part of my question since Christmas is coming up. :)

I definitely agree with that. For I don't think that there's any better reward than to give to somebody in need. :)

I think I remember hearing different kinds of money systems have been around for a very long time. From coins made from gold and silver, to even a type of seashell that might have been used for trading amount islands as money. That said I've also heard that paper money was origionally used as a note of payment instead of payment. Kind of like saying "I owe you one gold coin," or "I owe you fifty gold coins." Then the paper notes got traded and passed around because they were easier to carry then a bag of coins.

I don't know if that's right or not, or if I'm not remembering it correctly, but I think that is where paper money comes from.

As for what the world would look like without money, I don't know. Money is so big a part of our world that a world without money would be an alien world to us. Money is just an extension of bartering our goods and our services to others. That way we can trade our hard work for something in return, or to trade something we have for something someone else owns. To think of a world without money I think we need to try and think of a world without bartering trade systems altogether.

My best guess is that without money the wold would be two extreems of both great generousity by some people who have the resources to share them, but it could also be a world of cruelty and crime with no restraint. (Possibly both). After all one of the punishments for doing a crime or for some kind of abuse is a court ordered fine. If that wasn't there, then that might destabilize most justice systems from being able to punish people from doing wrong on smaller matters.

I have seen Afghanistan, and knowing local, history .imagine working for a muck farm ,you are too far in the stixs, you, hate it .just leave?

In,Afghanistan when i was there our mint printed and we told the value to,them of it,I posses money from pre Russian invasion ,Pakistani ruppee, and the newer one.in my ao,families did take live together but try that with polygamy .separate houses.

You are forgetting the fact the the first command over honest money and weights,is in the Torah .why would God mention that ?Egypt was cheating .He warned isreal over that .isreal having a more agragrian system still robbed the poor .

No,matter what means to trade man not,the method is the problem .the warnings over moving survey markers is also there.

Its not coinage but the desire for power and things that do that
