As I continue to study the history of Israel in the Old Covenant (Old Testament) I was surprised that so many animals were slain for a sacrifice.

2Chronicles 7:4 "Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD. 7:5 And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God."

2Chronicles 15:11 "And they offered unto the LORD the same time, of the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep."

This is my question, why so many animals? Why not the complete number 7. 7 oxen and 7 sheep? or 24 oxen and 24 sheep? Does anyone know why they sacrificed so many?

LEVITICUS 19:5 And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, ye shall offer it at your own will.
6 It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire.

Sounds like a awesome BBQ to me. :thumb
The way the sacrificial system works is that it was supposed to be eaten.(Not saying it was done for this specific reason) I believe this a one time epic sacrifice to dedicate the temple.

The ceremonial of dedication consisted principally in the introduction of the ark into the temple, and in the sacrificial offerings that were made on a scale of magnitude suitable to the extraordinary occasion. (1 Kings 3:2)

It would appear from verses 7 & 8 that Solomon was offering burnt offerings, peace offerings, and meal (meat KJV) offerings all at the same time for all of the people, while also making this a seven day feast of dedication.

JoJoe brought up Leviticus 19:5, the sacrifices of the Old Testament are not all that different from the monetary gifts to the church described in 2 Corinthians 9:7. That is why there were so many animal sacrifices, because the people wanted to give, and as a person who lives in a State with quite a bit of farming if they sacrificed 7,000 sheep they probably had a lot more where that came from.

Thank you Chopper for bringing this scripture to light. If you will recall last week in your Matthew study thread I brought up Hebrews 9:8-9 and the necessity for the removal of the first tabernacle. In this thread you have brought to light the dedication of the first tabernacle. Now I do not know the significance of the number of animals sacrificed, nor do I have much of an interest, but there are some things within this passage that I would like to point out that you may consider them.

I know people like to think all kinds of thoughts when it comes to the lake of fire in the book of Revelation, and who am I to say whether they are right or not. Maybe it is to each of us what it needs to be for us in that moment of time. But none the less, just take a few minutes and try and picture for yourself the appearance of the Glory of the Lord as described in the opening verses.

2 Chronicles 7:1-3
Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord 's house. And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

2 Chronicles 7:12-16
And the Lord appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice. If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

The first thing I would point out is that it was called a house of sacrifice.

Psalms 40:5-7 (I would suggest reading all of Psalms 40)
Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done,
and thy thoughts which are to us- ward:
they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee:
if I would declare and speak of them,
they are more than can be numbered.
Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire;
mine ears hast thou opened:

burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
Then said I, Lo, I come:
in the volume of the book it is written of me.

The eyes and the ears of the Lord from Heaven attended to the prayers made on Earth in the Temple of the Lord, the house of sacrifice as long as the children of Israel obeyed the covenant. But they did not, and they broke their covenant, and the Lord removed himself from the Temple on earth; the ark of the covenant being removed forever after the destruction at the hand of the Babylonians.

Now what I would call you to pay closer attention to that you might consider for yourself would be the "eyes" and "ears" of the Lord, and were he chose to put HIS NAME forever. As the Psalmist declares: Lo, I come, in the volume of the book it is written of me. I do believe that most people receive this as a prophecy fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of Man. With that thought in mind, pay attention to the eyes and ears, and hear what the Spirit saith unto you.

Zechariah 3:7-10
Thus saith the Lord of hosts;
If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge,
then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts,
and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou,
and thy fellows that sit before thee:
for they are men wondered at:
for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch.
For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua;
upon one stone shall be seven eyes:
behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts,
and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
In that day, saith the Lord of hosts,
shall ye call every man his neighbour
under the vine and under the fig tree.

Upon One Stone, the Chief Cornerstone; The stone that the Builder rejected, the BRANCH. It was to Him whom the Lord did choose to place HIS NAME forever, for though his death and resurrection Christ has become our House of Sacrifice, and based upon better sacrifices than those of bulls and goats.

Revelation 6:9
And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

Psalms 10:17
Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble:
thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear.

John 14:1-4
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Seven times repeated in the book of Revelation for your warning, to each of the seven churches: "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches."

1 Corinthians 3:16
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

If indeed you believe that you are the temple of God and that His Spirit dwells in you, then the Spirit of the Lord speaks from Heaven directly to us as part of his new creation if we would only humble ourselves and listen to hear what the Spirit saith. We are each the temple of God. The house of many mansions. We are the new heavens and the new earth. The Temple of God that he has chosen for Himself from the foundations of the world that He might reveal unto us through Faith the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord in our hearts, the Lord of Our Righteousness.

Knowing what the children of Israel beheld at the dedication of Solomon's temple as the Glory of the Lord filled the House in that day, How should you expect to receive the Knowledge of the Glory of the Lord in your heart except through FAITH. Or if not by faith, perhaps a lake of fire.

Romans 1:21-23
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man.

Thank you my friend for your reply. Those portions of Scripture do help to understand the sacrifices. Actually, the number of animals sacrificed still puzzles me. Someone mentioned the number of Tribes that were there for the establishment of the Temple seems to make sense if all Tribes and people brought their sacrifice, the number of animals would be huge.

Hi Chopper,

Why so many sacrifices? Good question. However I ask: why sacrifice at all? Sacrifice I tend to think was a carry over from the days of living in Mizraim. Could be, people were weak and couldn't shake off the pagan nature they had developed while in bondage. Commandments concerning sacrifice were quite possibly simply given in order to regulate and govern their intent and purpose. Because it seems they were going to sacrifice anyway.

"For I did not speak to your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices; But this thing I commanded them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you. But they did not listen, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward."

"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Yehovah require of you, but to do justice, and to love loving mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"

As JoJoe Mentioned. Only a portion of the animal (the fats) where offered as a burnt offering, a portion would go to the priest to eat and the rest eaten by everyone else. The animal was not wasted, and large groups of people need lots of meat. Now if there was no BBQ, then I would be concerned.

I truly believe that the reason for so many animal sacrifices were to show the weight and the burden of sins, and to show exactly how ineffably all-powerful the final sacrifice of Jesus Christ was, and is. One Perfect Lamb, once and for all. Hallelujah.

Matthew 18:22
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

490 times

Solomon's offering
4,900,000. And those could not take away sin.

Christ's one time offering of himself took away all the sins of those who believe.
