Why the focus on homosexuality?

Why do we focus so much on homosexuality as opposed to other sins?

These are my theories and opinions.

1. The media has focused on it despite the fact that homosexuals are such a small percentage of the population.

2. Obama......he openly stated he now supports "gay marriage" despite his stance on the subject in 2008. I guess it's hard to buddy up with hollywood celebs if you think that way.

3. Homosexuals have an agenda. Even though their numbers are very small, they seem to be louder than other groups(thanks to popular media). Homosexuals now consider themselves in a civil rights movement.

4. Obama has declared June LBGT pride month....yeehaw......,but then he ended the speech using the Lords name, oh the irony.

We are on a battle front right now as christians. A battle that will not be won easily. Vote with your values, VOTE! Let them know we are not the minority. Let your voices be heard loud and clear.

DO NOT HATE. DO NOT CALL NAMES., but DO NOT fold to he homosexual agenda. Do it with love and conviction with what is right. We're headed rapidly toward Sodom and Gamorrah here in the U.S. If I lived outside the U.S. I would swear the homosexual population here must be more that %50 by watching mainstream media!

I'd say that there is more to it than just politics. It's easier for man to condemn that which he has never done, than to condemn that which he did or stills partakes in. Homosexuality is a sin, no greater and no less than another. It is a unique sin, but it is not greater or no less. It's unique for a number of reasons:

To be homosexual means that you are actively participating in sin. It is a habitual sin and it has no other form. Whereas, say pornography is often a habitual sin it can be transformed, through Christ, into just one of those sins we are easily susceptible too. We pray against it and we may fall to it, but we can fall to it for a moment and be raised up again by Christ in the next moment.

As I understand it, from those who have been slaves to homosexuality but are no delivered (praise God!), when you are in the sin of homosexuality it is a perpetuate state until the time that you are delivered. One cannot be a homosexual and be a Christian, as to be this means that the Spirit is not within you because you are still in a habitual sin, just the same way that one who is in a habitual state to any other sin, be it pornography or drugs or what have you, does not have the Spirit dwelling within.

Now that is not to say that they are not on the road to the Spirit! We all had to, at one point, stand on that road, still carrying our sin-burdens and looking for Christ. We may even act Christian at that point, but the Spirit is not within us for we are still within the slave-camp of sin.

So, I'd say homosexuality is a unique sin in that regard. It is also unique in that it is one of those sins that many walk in, but many have also never experienced, as I said before. And in this way it is just a lot easier for us, who have never partaken, to vilify it because we can do so without the burden of rekindling our previous guilts.

Of course there are secular influences that raise it to such a high point. Though God sees all sin as equal, the devil doesn't. Satan loves some sin more than others, and he is a particular fan of the sexual variety, because it is such a pervasive form of sinning. It corrupts the soul of the doer very quickly. The entire body of sexual sin is openly promoted and praised by the secular world. It was the same in times of scripture.

The Body of Christ is just very quite in most regards to sexual sin, but in regard to homosexuality it isn't. These two things in conjunction make for homosexuality to be a very "hot-button" issue.

1. The media sells sensationalism, not reality

2. Nobody cares what obama says

3. You cannot speak for them as a group. Some may have an agenda; it is both unfair and incorrect to claim they are "all in on it" or something to that effect.

4 Again, nobody cares what obama says.

The simple reason so many Christians focus on homosexuality is that it feels so very good to be able to tear someone else down for a sin they're not in danger of falling prey to. Schadenfreude, plain and simple. As an added bonus, they come across looking Holier by taking the focus off their own sins.

We, generalizing Christians, find the subject titillating. The number of threads, on the subject, in this forum alone is a clear testimony to that.

I hate it yet here i am.....:bigfrown

Actually, instead of blindly impugning "Christianty" with your continual bigotry, you should instead apply your own opinion as to why you are impugning Christianity with your continual bigotry..

try this as your reason to do it...as you wrote it.

:nod Lot's of wisdom and insight here. We rarely if ever hear of gossip or gluttony because those are sins Christians revel in.

When was the last time anyone has heard of a rip-roaring, hell-fire and damnation sermon about the evils of reviling? Anyone? Anyone?

But, homosexuality... now that's a topic that safe for pastors and preachers to go after because a: it's prevalent in our society today and b: most of their tithing congregants haven't already sinned that particular sin several times prior to church.

As for homosexuality being in the world and in the media and in the polls and ballot boxes today...

If we had a smilie guy beating the same drum, I'd use him here, but we don't so I'll sing the same song, same verse: :guitar

I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves. 1 Corinthians 5

So much easier for the Church to stand in condemnation of the world... whilst turning a blind eye to the sins of those aforementioned tithe paying congregants.

I am quite confident that you are 100 % correct with this analysis.

I am 110% certain that you are %110 wrong in your confidence.

LOL!! I can't believe he didn't see the irony in his own post. :biglol :eeeekkk

Brian,

The push towards equal rights with gays has been around for a long time... lots longer than Obama has been President, that's for sure. I'm not sure if you live in the East or the West, but those of us who lived in California during the late '70's and 80's certainly were well aware of the push towards societal acceptance of homosexuality back then. This especially became true when both the AIDS epidemic hit and when Harvey Milk was assassinated, even though his murder had little to nothing to do with his homosexuality.

The thing is... why should we in the Church be so fired up about it? What's out in the world is out in the world... We need to keep our own house clean and we haven't done so. The fact that homosexuality is being accepted within the church isn't because it's being accepted in the world... it's because the church is getting more and more carnal.

The first Church was born in the Roman Empire and homosexuality was fairly prevalent in the society... and yet that didn't stop the Church from flourishing. It was in this society that Paul said, "What do I have to do with judging outsiders?"....

Homosexuality in the world didn't kill the Church then, partly because the Church probably was a lot more stringent upon keeping a clean house. By keeping a clean house, the Church was truly salt and light.

I'm a housewife... I clean house a lot. And the way to clean house is to get down and dirty with the brooms, mops and sponges... not to stand on street corners and shout loud and long about how much dirtier the house down the road from mine is.

I am 110% certain that you are %110 wrong in your confidence.
As you might have guessed, your opinion is of no consequence to me.

However, I will challenge you when you spread information that I believe is harmful to the reputation of the church and / or the gospel.

Like the time you cited the findings / views of a person who turned out to be a Nazi, in defence of your position of gun rights.

My church talks about homosexuality when we come to a passage on the subject but it is never a condeming discusion, more like reminding us not to condem the individual but to treat them as a person. Everyone is a sinner and the pastor will always make time for us talk about our sins.

I dont see a focus on homosexuality except in the media and on internet forums. I generally just read a few top threads and this thread is at the top right now. (I do not have the time to read every thread).

I do care what my president says very much as he is to represent me and you to the rest of the world. Elected reps! The media does very much sell sensationalism. I know because I work in the media! Not just media, but BIG media. You have most likely seen my work, in fact. I am in a position to know in this regard. We sell sensationalism. You didn't hear about Shea Lynn Baird, but you heard about the face eating man! There is a reason.

Please understand that you might be seen as speaking for the group by your last paragraph in the quote. Not saying you are, but perception is perception.

DarkHoarseRising, lets start a thread about a subject that is not about homosexuality. Lets talk about... creating sustainable border countries so that thousands of people don't feel the need to leave their friends, family, homes, towns and cities to risk their lives treking through desert expanses with coyote guides only to be hated once they have arrived for doing whatever they can to take care of the ones they love! There are plenty of subjects that we can start!

PLEASE WATCH THE PERSONAL REMARKS

I agree with some of the above. It is easier to call out particular sins that we are not tempted of.

It's not true that "Nobody cares what Obama says". Clearly, many in our country do.

Another reason(s) Christians are as vocal as they are:

  • There's no "Gossiping Day" at Disney's Magic Kingdom.
  • There are no parades thru our cities celebrating "stealing pride".
  • There are no bills being pushed in states throughout the country that put lying on the same level as telling the truth.
  • etc., etc., etc...
In other words, there isn't such an organized effort by supporters of other sins to validate them as acceptable. :gah

I think Americans used to hate political enemies ( communists) and when that threat ended the focus changed. As soon as Communism was defeated they started hating gays instead.

I don't think any other country hates gays like the Americans. Us Aussies sure don't.

I think hatred of anyone is a bad thing and should be stopped, there is sure no need or excuse for it. vehement opposition is taken as hatred. Most christians don't be like this. I think we are given a bad name by those that do gay bash.

Chris, please don't fan the flames here. I don't see anyone "hating gays" in this thread or on this forum. Those who object seem to be focusing on the sin, and I don't see this as an "American" thing.

There doesn't need to be. There are far, far more people involved in the sins of lying and gossiping than homosexuality. Probably stealing too. And they already are acceptable to large segments of the population, probably more than homosexuality. The only difference is that the people involved in these sins, even the Christians, can either justify them or simply hide them. They don't need an organized effort to promote or normalize these sins; they're already well established.

Seriously, if we did an anonymous poll of users of this forum, and if people were honest, I imagine more people gossiped about someone last week than engaged in homosexuality in their entire life. I'd wager that more than a couple people on here have taken creative liberties with their tax returns. In fact, probably a few heterosexual people on here are currently in a sexual relationship outside marriage. But nobody organizes campaigns to tell any of them that they're going to burn in wretched Hell for their unforgivable sin. Why is that?

you know me mike i am anti-anti gay and try not to be a trouble maker.

I have watched these gay bash threads for years now and some participants are sickening what they say in the name of christianity. Just like the christian protesters at Heath ledgers funeral.

I guess my thoughts are more directed at past events not present, I hope nobody thinks I meant it for them now.

I would rather see all gay bash threads banned. I wish these wouldn't appear in popular posts every time I look. Thers been one every time I look in the last week. Every time i see one I dont bother posting in the forum.

Surely there must be something better to talk about.

i regularly use other forums and there is never gay bash threads there.
