What you described is soul sleep. Show me how it is not.
Well, you said this is the first time you have heard of this. The implication is you know what has been said of this. Yet you again say you hardly ever read commentaries. I am asking for those you do use that say that the son of perdition in (John 17:12) is not Judas?
What you say concerning Judas doesn't matter one witt....unless you provide the commentaries that say Judas is not the son of perdition in (John 17:12).
If you cannot, all you are saying is that is 'only' your opinion. Which can only mean, you are oblivious to all commentators in past Christianity. Which means you don't learn from anybody. Just you and God....right?

Commentaries are of man as some are inspired while others are not, but the word of God brings all truth by His Spirit. I search commentaries for scripture alone then take all of them cross referencing the OT with the NT including history for my understanding as you can see in all the teachings the Lord gives me to write. I'm not intelligent to even begin to write anything of my own separate from that which the Holy Spirit reveals to me either directly or through others with a greater understanding. If Jesus came to you unknowing to you that it is He himself you would refute that of what He is trying to teach as you follow a majority rule word of God.
Soul sleep is a belief that the soul rest in the grave until the coming of the Lord, but this is a false teaching taught by JW and Seventh Day Adventist. This is what happens to our soul after this physical body dies.
We are immaterial souls joined to a physical body created by God from the dust of the ground. God breathed His breath/spirit into our nostrils that made this body a living soul. We are made up of three parts being spirit, soul and body that are joined together when we were conceived in our mother's womb.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The body is physical with five senses being sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch that connects with the world.
The soul is the part of the human being that will live on in eternity and with our soul, not our body, is the part of us that is to love God.
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
In those two verses it speaks about our soul as being in relationship with God and not this fleshly body. It's our soul and spirit that needs regeneration by God's Spirit.
The life we have here on earth is temporal as our physical bodies will die and return to the dust and be remembered no more.
Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
1 John 3: 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
The life and the blood is in Jesus who gives our soul eternal life with the Father by that of the blood sacrifice of Christ through God's grace that we are made righteous by the righteousness of God through the Spiritual rebirth. God is not going to reform our physical bodies that have returned to dust, but will raise us from the grave in new glorified bodies that we know not what we will look like.
1Thess 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1Thess 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1Thess 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
These verses are speaking about all who have physically died that are the Lord's own that what for the resurrection when Christ returns. This is where I get the word "asleep".
