Will we all die this year?

Okay, I'm not creating this thread because I believe in the Mayan calendar. I'm being a little facetious with this, but I am also interested to know what other Christians think about the whole Mayan calendar business...

Do you think we will die this year? Supposedly on December, 21 2012 we are all scheduled to die, it will be the end of the world and a new world will begin.

I've been watching a lot of discovery channel, and science channel and there are scientists that are seeing solar flares worse than ever before, and by the patterns they can see that we are going to have a significant solar flare very soon. The last one we had was in the 1800's and we didn't have electricity yet, and EVERYTHING didn't depend on computers and servers to run. Literally, everything in our lives depends on electricity. The solar flare that occurred in the 1800's was so bad, that if they had today's technology it would have all been completely fried and we would have returned to living with no electricity. The problem with this is that scientists don't know if it will happen on December, 21 2012, or in the year 2015. They just know it will happen soon.

The scientists say that when it happens, it will blow up all our electrical grids. When that happens they say it will take years to recover and get things running again. We may live in a period of little house on the prairie and possibly live like the movie 'The Book of Eli' (great movie by the way, Denzel Washington is one of my favourite actors). I seriously think if a solar flare that could wipe out our electricity could happen, then we may start to see people rioting in the streets, robbing each others homes, pillaging and raping, and murdering others for food.

We depend so much on grocery stores for food, that most of the population won't even know what to do to get food. I've never been hunting before, but it's starting to sound like it might be a good idea to learn how if I ever need to survive without electricity. My dad has a hunting bow that he used as a boy, and I asked him if he would teach me archery. Hopefully we'll get around to it, before the solar flare. That is if it's even going to happen.

What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts on this is that come December 22, 2012, the Mayan cult is going to slip into extinction when they see the world still standing strong ! :D

I get you...and your facetiousness is amusing:D

NO! I must see my great grand children - I must see the 20th generation. Such a thing can always happen...and interestingly in my dreams. I'd wake up the next day and write the fiction. Guess what? Hollywood business;)

Cool.
I wasn't there in the 1800's, though I was molecularly dispersed.
It won't happen, but if it does, I'd like to see what we'd do about it. We all would get back to the stoneage. We'd exhaust our clothes -everything, and interestingly be all naked. We'd be Adams and Eves. No more spending money on costly clothes - never! No more cars - 'cause no electricity to drive our electric motors, Induction motors etc...engineering depends a lot on electric motors. No more TVs, no more radios - town criers would be available:chin Gong men would be there. And Riniel would be the newscaster - an international town crier.

But we can still write. We can still talk to parrots - and they'd send our messages and deliver our mails:D Parrots do speak.
We'd build thatched houses (walls made of clay) for our Presidents. Where could President B. OB dwell in? Thatched stuff:toofunny But in a technologically better one.

All church choirs would only do acapella!:angry No band accompaniment. Of course there'd be wooden drums etc:)

The most interesting part is that we'd all be naked in the towns (when we exhaust our clothes). This is already (or politely speaking) an almost-naked generation. What is there to lose -when most of our people are half nude?:shrug:dunno

Or could we try in leaves?

We ought not fix it back. Forget electricity. Let's enjoy it.

Riniel, learn how to hunt now. You'd starve if you don't. And if I can't hunt, at least I can apply a technique: steal-some-meat-from-the-hunter-and-be-a-smart-fellow, a process and a technique I applied last year when my mom was cooking in the kitchen:lol

I want it to happen - but all is a big dream

Today on the Gregorian calendar is Wednesday, January 4th, 2012. That's just the way we use different words and numbers to keep track of what day it is, nothing more - right?

The Maya used different words and symbols (of course). Last week, on December 31st, our calendar ended. In about a year from now their calendar will "end" in a very similar manner. This only means that the LongCount advances, not that the world ends. Dec 20th, 2012 is not the last day of the Mayan calendar. Instead it is the last day of 12 baktun.

Today is: 12 baktun .. 19 Katun .. 19 Tun .. 0 Winal .. 8 Kin ----> or in shorthand: 12.19.19.0.8

Dec 20th 2012: 12 baktun .. 19 Katun .. 19 Tun .. 17 Winal .. 19 Kin ----> or in shorthand: 12.19.19.17.19

Dec 21th 2012: 13 baktun .. 0 Katun .. 0 Tun .. 0 Winal .. 0 Kin ----> or in shorthand: 13.0.0.0.0

The Mayan calendar will continue until the last day of 19th baktun which, on the Gregorian Calendar is October 12th, 4772.

"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!†Mark 13:32-37 NKJV

It should not matter.

...not if you truly have Christ in your heart. Death is ultimately an illusion anyway, I think. If you have true knowledge of God, you don't experience it an end but as a continuation. You won't have to fear an end anyway or what's to come hereafter if you physically die filled with God's infinite love.

Now to answer whether the Mayan calendar prediction is going to bring the complete a annihilation of the world, its up in the air. I have no opinion toward or against it really. I say just live everyday like its your last and treat every moment as a holy and sacred gift.

Scripturally speaking, this whole thing is impossible. The bible makes us understand that certain things will happen YEARS to come. If it happens, then the Word isn't true.

Apocalypse? Nein!!!

Whew, this is good to know. I was just about to start selling all my possessions and start living it up! :thumbsup

Just kidding of course. :toofunny

I totally agree w/ "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." because that is what God said! :thumbsup

I have a prediction....

I predict when December 21st comes and goes and status remains quo...conspiracy theorists, doomsday prophets and cranks will turn to something else to start getting hysterical about. :nod

I have studied this is issue 'bit and I think that as stated above, it is only end of calendar.

It would be kinda cool if we would like evolve to angel like beings (4th dimension), but that sounds more like science fiction.

But one thing I like to believe for sure - no matter what happens -is that as John 14: says:

1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The return of Jesus Christ can happen at any moment given where we are in the church age. The only thing we should fear is if we have not repented of our sins and accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. Don't worry about Mayan cults. The bible tells us all such religions are "nothing".

Don't take much stock by shows you may see on Discovery or the History Channel. Many, especially if they attempt to describe Christian prophesy, come from either a liberal or secular humanist viewpoint and do not square with sound biblical interpenetration. I've seen many over the years and just about all misinterpret the scripture.

WIP.:dunno:shrug:confused

I guess I don't see any value in speculating whether or not the world will end today, tomorrow, this year, or whenever. Jesus tells us that no one knows, not even He knows, so who are we to think we can predict it? We are to be ready always. If we are truly ready always, it doesn't matter when it comes. It's when we are not ready that it matters.

Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow.....

I suppose I should have been a little bit more specific.... I watched the discovery channel about the solar flares, and it had no connection to the Mayan calendar hogwash... I was stating that PERHAPS (by chance maybe), that if a solar flare happens this year, maybe not even on the day of the supposed end of the Mayan calendar that something might happen this year. I don't believe in anything that claims to predict the future.

Classik, I like your fantasy of what will happen if we all end up in the stoneage again... lol. Sprechen Sie deutsch? Früher war ich in Deutsch als Kind fließend, aber ich habe eine Menge vergessen.

The stonage thing is perhaps a blessing. I miss those days, though I was not existing as a human - but was somewhere.

My teacher in French gave me a heartattack. He made life miserable. And waht makes you think you are not fluent in German?

The end of the world because the Mayan calendar ends on Dec 21,2012?

It's simply denotes the end of an era and the beginning of another. In reality there won't be anymore of a sudden worldly jolt than there was when the industrial age ended and the information age began.

Maybe it was like Forrest Gump who decided to run and after 3 years decided he didn't want to run anymore. So the Mayan writing the calendar decided to do a calendar but when he reached 2012 he decided he didn't want to do it anymore and went home.

Or his sacred chisel broke.

Or maybe we haven't found the other half.

Or maybe Dec 21, 2012 was the author's last mortgage payment.

:chin

:D

Or maybe when the Europeans came to the America's and annihilated the Mayans, they didn't have a chance to finish it before dying?

Classik, the reason I am not fluent is because I have forgotten a lot of the words... I have tried to have conversations with people in German and it was very difficult for me, and I couldn't remember a lot of the words. I think if I were to learn it again, I would probably become fluent again in a few months.

Or maybe when the Europeans came to the America's and annihilated the Mayans, they didn't have a chance to finish it before dying?

If they had known the Word of God, that man does not know the time of His coming, the end of days as we know it, then no such prediction would have been made. If we want to believe the Mayans predicted the end and that it is true then we have decided to believe a pagan society rather than God. I don't think there's much evidence they believed The Father, the ultimate Creator of all things. Therefore the Mayan calendar cannot be a prediction of the true end of the world since that prediction contradicts God's Word anyway.

It's the end of an era as they supposed eras to have been within the confines of celestial alignments.
Nothing more.
Dec 12, 2012 will be a hyped non-event like the Y2K scare. It may be fun to talk about it and such but to take it seriously as a prediction of the end of the world, well, is like believing in fairy tales and fantasy through the over-active imaginations of others who perpetrate that kind of nonsense.
