Woman Who Drowned In Wedding Dress

Maria Pantazopoulos, a bride who drowned in her wedding dress during a photo shoot, may serve as a warning to other brides attempting similar stunts.

The Laval, Que. bride waded into the Ouareau River near Rawdon on Friday wearing her wedding dress, which became soaking wet. She reportedly slipped into the river, weighed down by the heavy dress.

The bride's photographer, Louis Pagakis, jumped into the water in an attempt to save her.

"Somebody else came … We tried our best to save her but we couldn’t save her,” he told CTV.

Pantazopoulos' friend Leeza Pousoulidis said the bride wanted to take part in a new wedding trend called "trash the dress," in which women ruin their wedding dresses in a professional photo shoot.

The death of the bride was tragic... but it was also stupid. I always tell my kids, "Don't die stupid" a response to the many videos that permeate our society... mainly of young guys showing off on skateboards or people BASE jumping... now I guess I have to add "Don't die stupid in your wedding dress" as well.

This may sound harsh and "unloving" to the bride... but I'm sorry, I can't drum up sympathy for someone stupidly walking into a river in something as heavy as a wedding dress. The first reports said that she was posing by a waterfall, implying that the spray from the fall caused her dress to become wet and causing her to slip over the edge... I thought that sounded really weird, but weird things do happen. However, the fact that she waded into the river makes much more sense.

As for the whole wedding insanity that is out there now...

I mean come on people, the average cost of a wedding in the United States is now $25,000!!! That's just the average, some weddings are costing over $35,000. And often, the couple is divorced before the wedding is even paid for. Now, these twitty little narcissist brides want to "trash the dress" that probably cost between $600 - $1000!?!
 
Stupid is as stupid does. Why waste all that money in a wedding dress to just trash it. I guess these people have more money than brains. I had no children to hand down my wedding gown to so I sent it to a friend of mine in Africa for her wedding as they could not afford one.
 
Actually her behavior is called "Conspicuous Consumption" a term coined by Thorstein Veblen in his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class".

Basically they are wasteful on purpose in order to prove that they have enough money to be wasteful. To them it's like a badge of honor.
 
Last year, I attended a wedding that cost the couple $16,000 .... his parents paid out $11,000 and the brides parents paid $23,000........ for a total wedding cost of $50,000 .... and this wedding was in south-central Illinois, where the cost of living is less than Chicago or St Louis.

The bride's gown was $7,000. It was nice...but nothing exactly elaborate. I heard at the reception that David's Bridal had a very similar gown on sale for $99 .........

The cost of weddings have grown to ridiculous levels.......... and now to trash the gown .... well, sometimes one has to question the intelligence level of some people's kids........
 
My niece is getting married in a couple of weeks and she is going to trash her dress by wearing it while she stomps grapes for wine. The dress only costs around $300 which I guess is pretty cheap for a wedding dress these days. Luckily she is cutting expenses with flowers, wedding dinner, etc.

Wow, this is an interesting and unusual idea...
 
I was telling my husband about this thread and about the bride who died last night. And, I mentioned to him what I'd like to do with my wedding dress... have it cut down to make christening gowns/suits for future grandbabies. I had read of doing that somewhere along the line and I thought that would best honor the memory of the dress...

However, I wasn't prepared for Steve's reaction... he actually became a little emotional at the idea of my wedding dress being cut up to make heirloom baby clothes. Now, Steve does tend to be Mr. Sentimental but I really never knew he had an emotional attachment to my wedding dress.

I wonder how many of the grooms are really OK with the whole "trash the dress" thing... Or have grooms been so conditioned by this whole bride narcissism "It's MY day, it's all about me, Me, ME!!!" that they don't even voice opinions about their own weddings any longer. :shrug

I know this has to be photoshopped, but the image is kind of disturbing. How is this something a bride would look at and say "Wow that's so cool".

Oh, I've heard of that, around 150 people, mainly young women died... terrible disaster and led to a lot of new safety regulations. It happened around the turn of the last century.

You should google it if you're at all interested in history.

Crazy stunts. Why girls go such mad about the marriage?
 
I guess it fits with North American society's outlook on marriage in general now. The bride's gown used to be a treasured reminder of being joined to her husband for life, something to be handed down to her daughter as a symbol of what marriage stood for. So now instead, they "trash the gown"? I suppose it's fitting in a society that has totally trashed marriage.

It definitely IS photoshopped. But its an awesome idea. If it were me on the picture I'd find it pretty cool... er.. hot..... Not because being a burn victim would be good in any way. But being "fiery" in a positive sense (like being passionate, being on fire for something you love, embracing the energy within you) in combination with a wedding dress as an epitome of love, femaleness and beauty is an impressive image.


Really sorry about that drowned woman. Very senseless death. :sad
