it means to love less

That is certainly my tendency to think that way! But the same Hebrew word is used in those two passages I hyperlinked, about "Esau have I hated" and the hatred for 6 (7) things in Proverbs.

Please tell me Hebrew is so nuanced that we actually know the same word isn't the same meaning in the two passages?

Miseo is greek.not hebrew .

How can it be that we are honor our parents yet hate them?

The command to honor our parents wasn't abolished,in fact Paul commands children obey and honor their parents

Yes, I said Miseo (NT) is Greek. I'm referring to two OT passages, Proverbs 6:16 and Malachi 1:3, originally written in Hebrew, using the same exact Hebrew word for hate in both cases. How can the same word mean two different things in these two verses?

English ,esau was fore known to be vile, vain, surely God can hate such vile persons who won't repent aND refuse to be saved.esau was vain.

That's not a hard concept if one sees the Calvin side of it.esau choose temporal pleasure over Him .He allows those choices.if he didn't Romans one where he turns one over wouldn't happen.

I've read that God "hated" Esau in the sense that he rejected him. Vessles of wrath vs vessels of mercy type thing, I guess...kind of like God hardening Pharaoh's heart to eventually achieve His own ends.

Hating one's life, hating one's parents...may mean to reject for The Kingdom of God. Kind of like...Matthew 16:24-26.

Clearly, I'm -not- an expert. Just sharing what I've read.

You know I was just thinking along the same sort of lines. Pondering what is actually what. I think that when the time comes(judgement day) what we do will be judged according to God's definitions and leave most of us surprised. I truly think that loves means more action than anything else and He is going to tell us we loved in a situation when we think we didn't. You know, those situations where our spirit follows his Spirit and we drag the flesh along kicking and screaming. We may not totally feel too well about what we did but He will judge our action as one of love and approve. Does that make sense?

Brother I hope so! It makes sense and...that's how He rolls so praise God for that!

So you're saying the same Hebrew word for hate in Proverbs 6:16 and Malachi 1:3 really DOES mean the same thing in both cases?

John 3:11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

Many call themselves a Christian, but know nothing of the Spiritual things of God for they have never been Spiritually born again nor have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. There's is a carnal knowledge as they speculate and try to use carnal logic. They only give lip service unto the Lord and these are the ones Jesus will say I never knew you, Matthew 7:21; 25:41.

It did repent God that He created man, Genesis 6:6, but His grace is to all who will repent and turn back to Him. God does not hate what He created, but hates the sin found in them as Proverbs 6:16-19 is what God hates in man with the seventh being an abomination to Him. It's not that God hated Esau, but He hated the sin found in him as even he had a chance to repent and turn back to God.

Luke 14:26 When Jesus said if you do not hate your mother and father and so forth I believe He meant if you hate not the sin found in them you can not be my disciple. Matthew 10:37 says pretty much the same thing as when we love the person (sinful flesh) more than Christ then we are not worthy of Him.
