Would your view of the Bible change?

I post this here so believers and non-believers can comment. Mods feel free to move if necessary.

For the Believer:
If conclusive evidence was found that proved the Bible was fake would it affect your faith?

For the Unbeliever:
If conclusive evidence was found that proved the Bible was 100% true and accurate would it affect your view of Christianity?

I would just like to hear your views on this.

Yes it would. My faith comes from the Bible. I have seen nothing that makes 'If' even a remote possibility.

Not for me ...
The Bible may be proved wrong but God is still very much alive and true based on my personal experiences.

:pray

If the Bible was proven 100% to be false, yes, that would change my faith, for it would prove God a liar, and if God is a liar then He would not be God. I would not put faith in a false god.

Let me answer that with another question.

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and the sky was green, the grass was blue, and water flowed uphill? We can speculate on it, but we know that it isn't going to happen. A number of attempts have been made to prove such things as that the body of Jesus had been found, that Jesus never existed, the resurrection never happened, certain people in the Bible didn't exist and many other things. These attempts all have two things in common - They haven't affected my faith in the least and they have all later been proved to be wrong.

As a hypothetical, yes my faith would be shaken to the core and would quickly fall, like the Tower of Babel.

I say a hypothetical because no one can ever prove God's Word to be false or a lie. In fact, with all the attempts to do so it has never even be stained by all the allegations. That in itself is a testament to God's Word!

I recall someone saying that with the advent of modern science and history it almost takes more faith to NOT believe in the Bible! Every time an allegation is brought against the historical nature of the Bible God unveils something to show otherwise.

For the Believer:
It would HAVE to effect a persons faith [see below for answer].

For the Unbeliever:
It would HAVE to effect a persons view [see below for answer].

Romans 10:17 "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."

Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

God speaks to us through His Word and His 'written word'. A believer has faith because of this word. Otherwise faith would be based on something 'seen'(not unseen) and 'attained'(not hoped for).

For the unbeliever it would HAVE too effect because if they believed it to be 100% true, then they would believe everything that is written in it. Therefore believing that;

John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

On the question directed to unbelievers, I cannot answer directly, HOWEVER...

You phrased the question to say the Bible is shown to be 100% true. It doesn't matter if it is or not because it still takes faith.

No because I'd just conclude that the evidence is fake or the people who carried it out are on an agenda or liars.

I thought about this before and if anythng I'd also think it's the start or think we're in the middle of the great deciever's lies, (the beast which the whole earth followed).

Too much has happened to make me believe IN God for ANYTHING to sway me now.

And don't forget the Word of God was written on the hearts of man long before it was printed; truth will always out.

Lamplady, if it were to be announced that there was conclusive proof the Bible was fake, I'd do pretty much what you say...question the proof.

If Dennyh is about to point us all to a website that claims incontrovertable proof about the bible being either true or false, I won't bother to click on the link!

But, I think Dennyh is asking a more philosophical question on how we as Christians or non-Christian are impacted by the Bible. It's in this spirit of philosophical inquiry that I would say that a fake bible would impact my faith.

I'd question the proof. I've had several miracles on part of God, so convincing me with the proofs of men would be very difficult to say in the least, let alone shake my faith.

:lol, I didn't even think about how it sounds like I am about to show some kind of proof. Sorry about that.

You are correct on the second part. This question is one I was considering the other day after a conversation I heard on the radio. So I thought I would get other's take on it.

Personally, at this point in my walk with God any amount of "proof" either way regarding the validity of the Bible would mean very little to me. I have experienced God and His Presence enough to know He does exist and there is nothing anyone can say or do to change my relationship with Him.

In other words if someone came up to me and told me God didn't exist my reply would be something like "really, I just spoke to Him this morning." :thumbsup

As in if the bible the was not printed at all?

Still wouldn't shake my faith.

Faith did not come from the written bible but from God himself or rather believing in the Word of God. I suspect it would be harder but not impossible as people before it was inscribed and before Christ, believed.

The spoken word was the only method of communication, (I believe that and even going by what historians tell us), before ANYTHING was written down and HIS Word had been among there.

It was there from the beginning.

So if you mean, the bible whether it is written down with ink or not, is proved false, - meaning again the Word of God - well that simply wouldn't, in fact I'd say IMPOSSIBLE to happen because God would NOT let that happen because sin DID happen.

Does that make sense? :P lol

Yes, there is no way to answer the question really because it just won't be. It'll be a lie.

To me it's like a whole other thing. Like asking is there a God or isn't there?

I don't know...human experience being what it is, and what it is is fatally flawed by sin, if I were to find that the Bible was faked but yet somehow someone who presents himself as "god" was there in my head saying "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain", I'd start to question things.

Without the Bible to validate our experiences with God, then who's to say that God is God and not Reverend Moon, or Hare Krisna or any other guru on the hill?

my testimony would be for naught as you know what i was, but the lord is real and has kept his word. all men are liars but the lord changes not.

I feel the Bible itself addresses the first question:

1 Cor 15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

But on the other side of the coin, God have revealed Himself to me in ways that are apart from scripture. :yes

Actually, it is not the bible that proves the existence of God.
Adam did not have a bible.
Noah did not have a bible.
Abraham did not have a bible.
Isaac did not have a bible.
Jacob did not have a bible.

.

I don't really care about other parts of the Bible. But if it was conclusively proven that the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus was a hoax, then yes, my faith in Christianity will be shaken to the core.

Good news is, there were hundreds and thousands of first-hand eye witness accounts to the gospels.

I've spent some time this evening delving into what I'm rapidly ready to call "New Age Christianity". It never ceases to amaze me what is passing for "Christian truth" these days. Most of it is far more real witchcraft than Harry Potter could ever hope to aspire to.

My point being, which I guess is the same point I made before, is that it is the Bible which defines our faith in God. That was God's purpose for it.

Think about the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Remember how the rich man begged Abraham to be sent back to warn his brothers. What did Abraham tell him?

"They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them."
But he said, "No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!"

But Abraham said, "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead." (Lk 16)

Think about that for a moment...Moses and the Prophets were all long dead at this time. Jesus was referring to the Scriptures when He referred to Moses and the Prophets, the Scriptures that were read in the synagogues each Sabbath. The Jews knew that these Scriptures were God's Word.

So, why would God's Word be more powerful than their very own brother back from the dead?

Jesus also said of the Scriptures, "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote of Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?" (Jn 5:46-47)

I believe the reason why our Lord says that if someone will not believe in the Scriptures, they will not believe in Him, even though He was standing right there in front of them and doing miracle after miracle before their very eyes is because both the ability to understand the Scriptures and the ability to have faith in Christ comes from the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit is not working in one's heart, the Scriptures remain incomprehensible and the gospel is just foolishness.

The Scriptures are uniquely the work of the Holy Spirit, He also uses them to open our own hearts to salvation as it says in 2 Timothy 3:15,
"and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

I know that it's possible that God can work in someone's heart in this day and age without the Scriptures, but it's very rare. The Scriptures are what God uses now, just as He used prior to Christ and just as Jesus Himself used them all the time, so that we can, via the work of the Spirit in our hearts, find salvation.

I spent part of this evening slogging through such terrible exegesis that leads some to teach...well, this for instance
There have been times after I have spoken at a church that a feeling of extreme self-condemnation would settle upon me while driving away. I would be overwhelmed with this heavy depression beating at me while thoughts of self-loathing would scream through my mind.

This heavy condemnation had come upon me as a direct result of gossip and backbiting from those speaking against me. The thoughtless tongues of others were placing a curse upon me; as revealed through a lady gifted with the Word of Knowledge, and witnessed to me directly by the Holy Ghost.

abbaloveus@msn.com
Can anyone, anyone at all tell me the difference between that and voo-doo or witchcraft?

Anyway, after an evening of slogging through stuff like this, I must say that we are fully and completely dependent upon the Scriptures. It is through them that we gain discernment between what is truly of the Holy Spirit and what are demonic lies masquerading as truth. This is why Paul was so pleased with the Bereans, because they didn't take his words at face value, but examined them in the light of the Scriptures to see if they were true.

The Scripture are so intricately tied to the work of the Spirit, so intertwined with His purposes, that if they were to be proven completely false, then God would be a liar.

An impossibility to be sure. There will be no way, in heaven or on earth the Scriptures will prove to be false.

But, the question is a good one to use as a tool to explore just how dependent we are on the Scriptures. We are so dependent upon them that I will stand firm on my previous answer, yes, if they were to be proved to be a lie, then yes, my faith and the faith of all who place their trust in God would be worthless ashes.
