'You are gods!' What?!

The Jews translate Psalms 82 it as such:

1. A song of Asaph. God stands in the congregation of God; in the midst of the judges He will judge. א.
2. How long will you judge unjustly and favor the wicked forever? ב.
3. Judge the poor and orphan; justify the humble and the impoverished. ג.
4. Release the poor and the needy; save [them] from the hands of [the] wicked. ד.
5. They did not know and they do not understand [that] they will walk in darkness; all the foundations of the earth will totter. ה.
6. I said, "You are angelic creatures, and all of you are angels of the Most High." ו.
7. Indeed, as man, you will die, and as one of the princes, you will fall. ז.
8. Arise, O God, judge the earth, for You inherit all the nations. ח.

I think Jesus knew exactly what he was saying to the Pharisees. It's almost template.

Humble thanks for the new replies Yodas_Prodigy, John, Asyncritus and Jeff, this is really so helpful and fascinating. :yes

If those in the resurrection are to be the sons of God and the brothers of Jesus Christ, what are they? The family dog? Are they not God? Think about this...

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

A twofold creation. The image of God, we have a head, torso, arms, hands, legs and feet. We look like God. In the resurrection we will have the likeness of God...

1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

The potential, the destiny of man is to become God's children. I am the son of my physical father, he was a human, I am a human. When I am the resurrected son of God, I will be God. Now we will NEVER be the same in authority or power, but we will be the same in composition. This verse is prophetic...

Psa 82:6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Our destiny is the be God and to be the children of the Most High.

To be made in YHWH's image does not mean an exact duplicate. And no, we are not going to be God. That is falling for the same lie promised by the serpetine shaped elohim in the garden.

Psalm 82:6 is Yah speaking to the divine counsel, elohim.... Not humans.... Being a son in the NT is clearly different to those mentioned in Gen 6 and Job 1.

Well alrighty then...

Luk 3:38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

Elohim is also translated judges, angel and God.

Exodus 21:6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

Judges in this verse is Elohim.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
God = Elohim

Psalms 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Angels = Elohim

We see that YHVH calls Israel his son.
Exodus 4:23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.

Context determines usage. Let us go back to the Divine Counsel who will die 'like' men. This counsel appears to be judges, angelic - spiritual. They seemed to be in control of the nations. There has never been a Hebrew counsel who were called divine. Nor has there been a Hebrew counsel of elders who have ever ruled the nations. This counsel may be the elders who influenced the 70 nations who are desendents of Noah. Sorry to be brief. I am on my kindle, not my computer. I could more easily give a fuller response.
