"You talk funny"

...yes, yes I do.
Okay, I'm probably the only one who does this, but I live in Upstate NY- I SHOULD have the appropriate accent...INSTEAD I sometimes sound like I'm southern..especially when I get frustrated. Oh and I pronounce Pizza as "Pizzer" Soda as "Soder" and Job as "Jorb" Anyone else do weird stuff like that?
 
Worsh, instead of wash. Used to drive my mom crazy. As an adult I trained myself to stop saying it that way. I have no idea where I got that from.
 
Down here I get told I sound like a Yankee, up in the northern states I get told I don't sound like a Yankee. I'm guessing my accent is closer to that of the states between the far north and far south, then. My mom was in the Navy, that's probably why. I'm told that your accent is developed by those you grow up around.

As a kid I used to call waffles awfuls and hamburgers hamboogers. Got corrected on that all the time.
 
My Uncle Tony has a long island accent, but my Grandma (his sister) doesn't. Part of that is because they moved from Brooklyn to Upstate when she was still little. My husband has a long island accent too because he grew up in Jersey. It's hilarious! He says "draw" instead of drawer and calls Binghamton "Bimmington"
 
West of the CT river party, car, garage.
East of the CT river paty, ca, gaage.
Pak the ca in the gaage. They sound like Mass.
And Jersey is just plain funny. I'm not sure how that would be spelled phonically, maybe Juzy
 
Basically, "Midwestern" is what most speech instructors try to instill. That seems to be the most "understandable" dialect in the U.S,A.

i live in louisiana and Ive had several people ask me if I moved here from up north but when I get real sleepy and Im trying to talk to someone I do sound more southern.My best friend bean loves to point that out while we are talking on the phone late at night.

Even after 30 years of living in New England, there are still upstate New York speech characteristics that give me away. I call soda "pop", a grinder is a "submarine sandwich", and, most distinctive of all is the hard "a" sound. Aunt is pronounced "ant" not "aount."

small town in CA population about 350 ... most all from Missouri. or Arkansas. Spent a few years there.. Back in 1950s TV had not yet tempered the local jargons... yea high .. over yonder. yes ma'am ..yes sir ..recon ..mosey etc as Deb said Worsh i still say that ... we moved from that small place, that country town, po dunk to the max.. my new school was in Carmel-by-the -Sea...Thats where Clint Eastwood was mayor... if you dont know where Carmel is it is next door to Pebble Beach i did not fit in..

I was born in SD, they say "ant and pop" that is what I heard at home even though we moved to CT when I was 4. At school my friends would tease me about saying "ant" but I never did manage to change it. But I did say "soda and grinder" and moved to CO and they say "pop and sub". I'm so confused.
 
I'm a West Virginia boy. I've got a southern accent but it isn't as lazy as some southern dialects are, you can tell us apart from Kentuckians for example lol.

I never thought about a southern drawl being described as 'lazy' before. I do think it is fitting though.

When the 11th Air Assault went to Watertown for field exercises I was right at home. You folks spoke so much like me I thought I must be in Texas. When I visited NY, NY I was floored by the open prostitution, funny accents and super sonic speech, not at all like Upstate New York, a violently different nation inside the city. I've been wrong more than I care to admit but if you are anything like the lasses in Watertown, except for the frigid Lake Effect Snow you would think youself at home in Texas.
