Youth - Not reading the Bible enough

Think the generalization that it is the youth today not reading it enough is a bit ill. Believe we ALL could be reading it more.

Would it not be wonderful...if we all stopped saying we are too busy to take five minutes out of our day...just to read a passage or two?

I don't know if it was a sincere mockery, though. I truly believe that person has no idea what is in the Bible.
I've never felt so curmudgeonly until I read that. I must be getting sensitive in my old age. I just don't understand why it is okay to mock the Bible in our society.

:lol I laughed the entire time. I don't think the guy was being serious. I think he was trying to show us what hollywood would do if we let them make a Bible movie today.

Anyone who thinks they wouldn't add explosions or a modern spin really needs to look into some of the modern updates they've been pushing out. :lol

Its sad, but true. If Hollywood would make a Bible movie, it wouldnt' be made to please Christines, it would be made to sell and bring in a prophit and merchandizing.

They can't even get basic Comic book or novel stories rigth without doing this, so I don't think the Bible would be different. ;)

They should try to bring in a prophet, instead. ;)

Hahaha!! That link is brilliant! made me laugh :D I think they're not being serious, they're just making fun of the Holiwood people 'cause that's what they would do! :D but I think what I just wrote has been said already but anyway good laugh ;)

Have seen one or two good movies based of a part of the bible. Such as "A Night With The King." Which is basically the story of Esther. It was not all that bad. Fairly informative too seeing as I did not fully understand what an Eunuch is.

This makes me sad. The Bible is read less and less, it seems, by today's youth. Do they just skim through it or what?
:nono
Its very disheartening.
People will read trunk loads of fiction books but have never even read the New Testament even a single time all the way thru and most havent even read a single NT book entirely.
Can we imagine the difference in the church if EVERY believer who sits in a pew would read their NT just one time all the way thru beginning to end ?
False doctrine might become a thing of the past.
:)

Id like to toss out to the readers here, if its not too far off topic, that there are a some Bible DVDs you can get if you dont have time for reading, but could have it playing in the background thru your day. I cant begin to say how far I came in my studies just by buying a CD walkman and listening to the Bible on CD while I worked, in the car and while running around the house. Its better than nothing. :)

Audio Bibles (DVD)
Bibles on DVD

Also Ill include links to a couple movies
The Gospel of John
The Jesus Film
The Visual Bible - Acts (avoid the similar movie "gospel of Matthew" movie at all costs :lol )

Heres the Jesus Film online you can watch for free.
Jesus Film Online

the irony of it all, is that when i talk about the bible to the fellow believer in relation to apologetics and basic biblical truths they tend to be lost. and some are able to defend their faith. but alot cant. sad i think all show be able to wield the sword and learn the sword so to speak.

many people shy from engaging aethists and run. i used to be that way, and i'm still learning how to engage them. but i will engage them to win them over for christ and pray for the wisdom and boldness to do so.

Maybe the young ones are not used to read the Bible from a young enough age anymore.
Jews go to Talmud Torah classes sometimes from age two! We also have Simchat Torah which basically is a holiday during which you have to study the Torah. My point is, when we're very young, our parents make it fun for us to read the Torah and growing up, it only seems natural to keep on doing it, it is always fun and enlightening to read the Texts. I myself do not read it everyday but I regularly take some time to get into it and think about it. and when I find mysself feeling down or sad, reading the Torah always makes me feel better.
Maybe the youth does not see the fun in it anymore? I don't know, I'm just wondering here...

What we started doing was buying boxes of bibles that are made just for kids of whatever age and giving them out. Typically lots of pictures to keep their attention, which seems to work well.

Handing a child a fine print KJV bible simply isnt going to work. Theyre kids and if we want them to want to learn we have to come to them on their level.

This is going to get me in trouble but...I blame the parents. Too many parents now days replace books, quality time before...after...and during meals, outside play, and the like with television as well as video games. The media is bringing up today's youth. Not the adults which bear and are supposed to raise them. Know this is not the case with all, but it is a growing trend.

Couldnt agree more.

Not reading the Bible enough is far from something that is restricted to youth. Far to often adults have the same issue. The Bible in many churches is reduced to a tool teachers use to back their points. Far to few churches teach the basics of how to read/study God's word, how to learn what it means and unlock its mysteries in your personal studies.

Much of church teaching has been turned into a teacher or preacher giving scripture context then preaching on it for a period of time. Members go home and file the scriptures away but do no amount of study on them to confirm/deny the teaching they received. This is ironic since you retain very little of what you hear in a sermon or class without outside reinforcement. In my Bible school days they taught us that about only 10 percent of what you hear you actually retain. And there is some truth to that. Largely it depends on what the person does during the teaching, (i.e. sitting idly, taking notes, jotting personal thoughts and extra scriptures to look up).

In truth the issue isn't something you can bring back to a single person, it largely is all our faults to some degree. Children aren't trained properly by parents, parents aren't trained properly by their parents/mentors/those who led them to Christ. Setting fault isn't really the issue, the issue is how can you fix it?

It is a shame but I know many people that still say that the bible confuses them, they don't know how to study it and just reading it isn't productive (to some degree this is do to the wandering mind effect that takes place when you read something your heart just isn't in). I've found that when you teach people how to ask the questions they need, how to use tools like the multitude of free study software and websites, that they begin to enjoy it more. When I've taught or preached Sunday services in the past I've always taught from a standpoint of bringing someone to a Biblical conclusions on their own. Ask questions, lead them from those questions, help them understand your scriptures, and help them walk into the message themselves rather then just giving a three point sermon on a topic that relies heavily on repetition, gimmicks, and animation to keep interest. After awhile people begin to ask those questions themselves, they begin to do it in their own time and it opens a brand new avenue for study of God's word.

It's a shame but if more preachers just went out and showed people how to study God's word on their own and use free tools like GPL versions of study software, and other free very good study programs and websites for in depth study then things would begin to turn around and we'd see a huge increase in God's outpouring in churches.
