“Get Rid Of It”
Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT
Get rid of all bitterness, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

We have all had situations in life where we’ve had to say “Get rid of it!” when we found something that needed to get tossed. Maybe it’s some moldy food that went unnoticed or got buried in our fridge for a while. Maybe it’s a trash can that has something very rotten in it and the moment we open it, we can’t even describe the smell! Maybe it’s a dead rodent that we start smelling somewhere in the house and we finally find it and are ready to be rid of the foul smell.

We could go on and on describing situations in which we find something repulsive or just something that needs tossed and we raise our voices a bit and say, “Get rid of it!”. There’s nothing good that’s going to come out of keeping these things and we know the only solution is to throw it away so that we can clean the bad smell up or just a mess that has gotten out of hand. We have all been there and done that to some degree.

None of us wants to keep foul smelling things anywhere or keep a terrible mess around to continue building. We may let the messed build up for a while, but there comes a time when we have to do something and take action. Most of us would agree that we gotten get rid of things that smell terrible or look horrible. These things do not make life easier, but they make it worse and much harder to move forward.

Just like these bad things, we’ve got things in our spiritual lives that we also need to get rid of. We so often hold on to bitterness, anger, harsh words, slander and evil behavior. We let these things fester and they do no good in our lives. We are clearly called to love each other and show grace and forgiveness to one another. All of us know that we have treated people we love and care about in these ways. We know people that we have treated poorly and, in a sense, it’s causing some smelly situations when God looks down on us. It’s smelly to Him, but often we don’t think twice about it. He wants us to get rid of these things and be full of love for each other. I know, much easier said than done depending on different circumstances and situations.

I challenge all of us to find things in our lives that we need to get rid of. Find areas and broken relationships in which we are holding on to the bitterness, anger, hard words, slander and evil behavior. We need to pray through this and ask God to give us a heart of forgiveness and show love instead.

Get rid of it and be filled with God’s love instead.

That we need to talk to God about issues in our lives, seeking strength etc to deal with them I wholy agree with you.
But to ask God for something that God does not have is unbiblical and not Christian.

God does not offer a blanket forgiveness of everyone and of everything, so why should a Christian do what God does not do?

God is willing to forgive those who repent and that is what we should be willing and ready to do.
Issues arising out of incidents in our lives we take to God for him to deal with us and the offender, while we pray intelligently for them.

That was really good. And beautiful imagery. :biggrin

Yes basing our behaviour on biblical principals/example of Jesus etc, rather than on simple 'feel good emotions'.

question for you.

'how does Christ forgive?'
It's very simple. Christ forgives by giving everyone "a second chance".

Do you remember the woman caught in adultery in John 8:4, They kept on asking Jesus about the woman. Finally, he stood up and said, “If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and throw the first stone at her!” and in the end The people left one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally, Jesus and the woman were there alone. Jesus did not accuse her either but told her to go and sin no more.

God gives you a standing of worth. You don't have to earn it; you start with it. God tells you already in the new covenant, I have loved you, I have forgiven you, I have cleansed you. I intend to use you; your life is significant. There is nothing more you can add to that.

Let's Pray:

Lord, l confess that I often have been like Moses, hiding behind a mask, covering up the fading glory of my own efforts. Grant me the grace to simply receive from You the gift of worth.

No. search the bible you will not find that taght anywhere.

God/Jesus forgives only on our repentance.

We like God have to forgive if someone is sorry for what they have done.
No repentance, then no need to forgive and like Jesus on the cross we hand that situation over to God to deal with, while we continue to pray intelligently for the offenders good.

Read Leviticus and dueteronomy for sacrifices for sin.
There the person presented themselve at the temple with the sacrifical animal, laid a hand on its head to symbolise responcibility and the passing of sin to the animal. Then it is killed.

The whole of Jewish culture was built around animal sacrifice and the consquence of sin.
Forgiveness required the symbolism of repentance through an offering.

As for the women taken in adultery. the case was illegal as they only had the woman, one cannot commit adultery by ones self.
When Jesus challenged there ability to be the holy accuser and they left, he didn't forgive, he only said he did not accuse her. There is a difference.

the parable of two men who went to pray, Jesus commented that it was the repentant who was forgiven.
Luke 17:3 he expletitly says we must forgive if they repent.

lastly you and I were savedbecause we repented. those who do not repent do not go to heaven.

Forgiveness sets a person free... Think about those who go through abuse situations. Like my dad, he sexually abused me as a little girl. He would never admit he did, but it doesn't mean I should have not forgiven him. Once I did, I was able to see him as God sees him. It also set me free. Forgiveness sets a person free. It is a gift. If it requires anything, it is not love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

There is a battle for every person's soul, yes. But God is merciful, and Christ Jesus death on the cross paid that debt. It is the heart God sees. Sanctification is a purifying process.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Context, context and again context. Which shows clearly she had repentent.

As you have said, When God makes you feel sorry enough to turn to him , which is repentance.

He would never admit he did, but it doesn't mean I should have not forgiven him.

I am talking about the command to forgive, what every Christian Must do.

If there is no repentance then there is no requirement to forgive. Then a Christian for there own peace of mind hands the incident, the people, their feelings etc over to God for him to deal with and while it is in Gods hands they pray for the good of the offender.

That you were able to forgive is a gift of grace from God, but please remember it is not a command.

Hmmm that is interesting. I'll have to pray about this. I have never heard of that before, so don't like to automatically throw things out. I think it can be a dangerous concept, because unforgiveness can hold you captive regardless if it is a command. But you have a point in that a lot of people are forgiven of sin, but are going to Hell for not receiving Christ's forgiveness. People don't go to Hell because of sin, but because of rejection for the payment of their sin. My thought though is just because there is consequence, doesn't mean that equals unforgiveness. We are also told in a different passage if we don't forgive every brother their trespasses, we are not forgiven.

Consequence:

your brother sins against you,c go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’d 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Ask in My Name
(John 16:23–33)

19Again, I tell you truly that if two of you on the earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven. 20For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.”

The Unforgiving Servant
(Romans 12:14–21)

21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?”

22Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!

Little farther down:

Matthew 18

32Then the master summoned him and declared, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave all your debt because you begged me. 33Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?’ 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should repay all that he owed.

35That is how My heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

Greetings, Who Me. I decided to join as I am an old friend of Sister from another forum.

I'd have to disagree with you here that it is not a command to forgive. It is in fact a commandment that is so important it can cost one his salvation if it is not obeyed. This is implied in the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant:

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

His being labelled a "wicked servant" and then being delivered over to the torturers are good signs these references are to the loss of salvation, though it is clear at the outset that he is forgiven of his sins when his huge debt load is forgiven. I find many people have a problem with this parable because of its implications and tend to dismiss the idea that it should be taken too seriously as a result. But it should be remembered this was a teaching of the Lord Himself, which should carry the utmost weight.
