What is a literal 24-hour day? When is sunrise and sunset? Depends on where you are. If you are standing on the north pole, a day is six months and a night is six months. Of course, the north pole does not exist. So the question is how close can we get to this imaginary point or the Earth's axis. How FAR can we get. How close do we get to the sun, and how far do we get from the sun? Not only the rotation of the Earth. But the moon. Earth and the sun affect each other.
The
Moon is slowly moving away from Earth, causing our days to become
longer over time.
Right now, the Moon drifts about
3.8 cm (1.5 inches) away from Earth each year. This affects Earth's rotation, making it
spin more slowly, which means our days are gradually getting longer. Scientists estimate that
1.4 billion years ago, a day on Earth lasted just
18 hours because the Moon was much closer.
Muslims can eat at
sunset during
Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Each day, they fast from
dawn until sunset, and the fast is broken with a meal called
iftar.
At the
Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in Dubai, there is a
time difference in sunset depending on the floor! Because of the building’s height (
828 meters), the
top floors experience sunset
about 2-3 minutes later than the ground level. This means that during Ramadan, Muslims on higher floors must
wait longer to break their fast.
If they want to break their fast sooner, they have to go to the ground floor.
