so who lives longer?

We had a wonderful conference. During one of the lectures a medical professional asked a question which I believe some of us have never probably thought about before. Here is the question, who do you believe lives longer between men vs women?

Is your reply universally true?

Statistics tell you that women live longer.I don not know why.But I am thinking their is a reason.So women marry guys younger than yourself.

During my muscle car heydays it was a fact that lower power engines lasted longer. They just didn't have the ponies to tear themselves apart as much as the higher performance engines.
I kinda wonder if the same thing holds true with men.

Can't say I've ever seen a woman hanging off the back of a garbage truck in all kinds of weather. Somebody has to do the dirty work and heavy manual labor.
Besides, doing stupid risky things has always been a challenge for men. No guts, no glory, no gain.

Garbage trucks are all working without someone hanging off the back nowadays. :tongue

Besides, there's been a study about nun and monks in monasteries, that are both living a lifestyle different from the average guys and gals (less hard physical labour, no drug use, no risk behaviour, much less stress, healthier nutrition than average westerners), and the nuns and monks that were surveyed had a very similar lifestyle (very little gender difference in life style). While the nuns had a life expectancy pretty much like average women, the monks did live longer than average men. However, they still had a life expectancy several years shorter than the nuns and "average" women.
So while lifestyle does matter, it seems there is still a biological component.

Besides, doing stupid risky things has always been a challenge for men. No guts, no glory, no gain.

Anyway, everyone is free to decide whether they want to take certain risks or enjoy certain things and in doing so take the risk of maybe living a few years less. In some cases that may be a price worth paying.
