ye old relic 1911, i was in the active army when that was phased out, i never fired, i only said 9mm because i used to the berreta 9mm. I was thinking we should to a new area all things military, pics, war stories, weapons platform, nick there are guns brian and i have fired that make most civilian guns look like nothing ie the mk-19, the 50 cal, 240b,240c, mp3(coaxial 50 cal on the avenger) stinger missile, arty peices, 105mm 120mm tank rounds, grenades, etc

let me know what you all think i have many pics and i have sent some to nick via email already.

Where's the spot where you choose .357 magnum with jacketed hollow-points?

That would be a different thread, but I'd still choose the .45 acp over it. For revolvers I'd go with .44magnum.

No, you don't want a .44 magnum for self-defense. That gun was designed for protection against large animals, such as bears and alligators. Granted, when loaded with .44 Special bullets, its large case makes it easy to handle. When loaded with .44 Magnum bullets, it is impossible to hold it straight after the recoil.

S&W model 29
The Caddy of the the 44 cal wheel guns.
8 3/8" barrel, red ramp and white outline sights with the target trigger and hammer. Stock knurled grips. I didn't like the pachmayr.

Sold mine a while back and now I'm kicking myself.
Did my own loading too. I used ball powder because it burned slow. 210g ball, jacketed. The powder burned dirty yes but it made pressure until the slug left the barrel. I wasn't getting any knock down power with the standard pistol powders. They burned too fast and the pressure escaped between the frame and the cylinder.

Sure I do!! If you tell Alaskans you use a .44magnum in a handgun for bears, they'll laugh at you. Blackbears yeah, but not grizzlies. A .44magnum will just make them mad. Better use a high power rifle or slug gun for those.

.44 magnum is a manstopper. For recoil problems, just get a compensator......easy greasy. A .357 magnum is no easy task to stay on target after the first round either, but you can shoot 38's from them.

Nice.

I have my eye on a ruger gp100 at a local shop for $380 used, 6in barrel. I like the hogue grips. :shades

I looked it up on the internet, and Gojubrian has a point. The .44 magnum revolver is suitable for hunting large game up to the brown bear. People have killed larger game, including buffalo and a polar bear, using precision shooting.

Decades ago, I had read in a gun magazine that the .44 magnum was sometimes carried by forest rangers and game wardens for self-defense against large animals. The article had stated that a .44 magnum could kill a grizzly bear. The idea was that at close range, it could kill a grizzly, but there doesn't seem to be a record of anyone ever doing it.

The 44 is also very effective loaded with shot for snakes. You can load up with a mix. But you must remember which is next. :D While camping I loaded up with 3 shot followed by 2 slugs.

lovely.. me too! lol :) And because I am used to it.. I love going to the range and shooting a 9 mm.. good times

who wants to mess with me now? :lol

I'd go for a .46 because it's bigger...

I know you were just being smart, but in semi-automatic pistols there actually is a .460 Rowland round, and a .50 round. Don't forget about the .475wildey favored by Charles Bronson.

I think the 9mm is the most managable round for females while still being effective for bad guys, all dependant on the round ofcourse.

I'm going to the range tomorrow too. I'll shoot a kimber .45 stainless 1911, a taurus pt111 9mm 3", and a beretta 92f 9mm. I might take the browning .22 as well.

Shooting is just relaxing, stress relieving, and fun, but the downside is it's getting expensive. Wal-Mart just raised their handgun ammunition price again. :sad

lol! I sure was. lol Nuts. I was wondering why no one said anything (hope they didn't think I was serious). Yeah, I'm clueless. My gun knowledge comes from TV and the movies. I've never heard of the .460 or .475. It really isn't funny now that I know it actually exists.
