An interesting thought

Is this the scripture you meant?

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another - John 13:35

Ok, I stand corrected
Love is something we do, is it a requirement???

i think that depends on what we mean by love. I think the love the bible speaks about is not a feeling - we cannot feel love for everyone. It is a way of life, as Paul describes it in 1 Corinthians 13:
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Jesse, our intention SHOULD be to show "letter writers" like these that Jesus died FOR us... freely, and with none of the "strings" attached that they are expressing concern about.....that they have repeatedly been told they have to adhere to and perform.... NOT that that they are going to have to prove to anyone on Earth that they are deserving by cranking out a bunch of things they are "supposed" to do.

Well said Willie. That pretty much sums it up.

Or...... we could keep on telling people all the things they will be commanded to do if they are a Christian. That should guarantee they will never want anything to do with such craziness.

Do you know there are 1,050 commands in the New Testament, alone? (Yep, I counted them)

It seems to me they all boil down to one.
If you love God, love your neighbor as yourself.
I have really hard time thinking of a list of sins that we could commit that wouldn't fit under that one command.
Jas 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Yet, how many of us immediately start listing the "Do's and Don'ts" to inquirers? It's as though we believe THAT is Christianity.

You know, I really turn to Adam Clarke's commentary often, mainly because of his knowledge of the languages and Jewish writings. And he was not a Calvinist. I don't remember exactly where it is that he wrote this or I would post it but his point was that we should not be expecting young Christians to behave in the same manner as mature Christians. We shouldn't be bombarbing them with condemnation, as you say all the do's and don'ts. It is the Lord who is working in them and we should be gentle and give them mercy.
It is the same with unbelievers. Give them the Gospel message of the cross.

Yes, we do often try to move WAY past what Jesus told us to give to people.

do good, not evil, and there will certainly be no punishment for the righteousness that you do

Blessings

What would you say to a letter like this?

I'm not a Christian, but I have a friends who are, and the other day they were telling me me , the Bible says hat grace means that I don't have to do anything to get saved. and don't have to do anything after I'm saved either. Is that for real?. It left me dumbfounded and blown away! That sounds like my kind of religion! Could this be true?

Help me answer this lost soul's question.

first off john chapter 3 the new birth needs to be shown along with Romans 3:23 all have sinned there is plenty of scripture to show him we are not just born saints . my self i focus in on the new birth and build from there .to be honest i hear a lot of this a lot .to many are self deceived . then some are just plain blinded by the god of this world

Tell him by Grace you are saved, through faith and that's not of yourself it's a gift from God.

Tell him Jesus didn't come to condemn, but to save.

Tell him God loves him and wants him.
