any supplement success stories?

I'm not looking for health advice, lol. I take a lot myself...Orthomolecular. Its from the 50s (back then, they called it MegaVitamin Therapy...for mentally ill people).

I was just thinking...like, the mainstream media loves some supplements (fish oil stands out) but seems to come down hard on others (vitamin E, lately). Meanwhile...

...most of us are left wondering who or what to believe, especially since mainstream coverage is usually simplified, put into sound bytes, so if its a meta-analysis or whatever, we don't get too many details. Also, the news people don't usuallly come down too hard on Rx meds. For instance...how many of us know how antidepressants often fail to outperform placebo by a significant amount? Then again, there are problems with supplements. There's not much data behind a lot of them, and the available data is sometimes not of the best quality. But...that's true of a lot of drugs, too.

Ugh. I'm just wondering if anybody has success stories to share w/ supplements for whatever ails you.

Thanks :)

Omega 3 has helped me with my mild seasonal depression. I've taken it in pill form, but then I found that eating lots of trout (mainly smoked on bread) helped just as much, so I mainly do that over the winter.

The TOG

I had back pain from a muscle that tends to go into spasm since 1988 or so. At times, I had to get muscle relaxers and an anti-inflammatory from the drug store (prescription strength, both of them.)

At the onset, cod liver oil helped. I took it for a long time, then dropped it. I ended up with a lot of pain and troubles on and off. For about four years now, I take a tablespoon every morning - and I must say, it helps a LOT. ONCE in a while I get a little twinge of pain, but it is minor most of the time. And I have not missed work for my back in at least four years.

Let me restate that: "It helps me a lot..." I am unsure if it is some universal cure or if maybe my Vitamin A/D is just too low.

HEy, um, I also have a life-long battle with constipation. As it turned out Monday, I now know what I have suspected for a long time - I have a redundant colon.

Anywya, if I take a tablespoon of what is generic Metamucil every day with 10-12 oz of water, I am fine. Any product that is mostly Psyillium Husk works; the Dollar General orange flavored stuff is my choice. Also, I've noticed that this product works almost as good as orange juice in washing down cod liver oil - so I take it right after the cod liver oil each morning.

Hope my posts help someone.

good to hear that supplements DO help people. I do old school Orthomolecular. Everybody thinks "Oh, Orthomolecular...Linus Pauling...Vitamin C..." and I mean, yeah, that's one form, but the version I do dates from the 50s. Mega doses C, b3, b complex, E, selenium, zinc, beta carotene, plus other stuff I threw in there.

Its weird...now that I'm more in touch w/ reality, I'm questioning the supplement thing. But then I thought about it....allergies are better, skin is better, no side effects from the Abilify (ANY antipsychotic, atypical or old school, can cause tardive dyskinesia, twitches, depression, etc.), less agitation and anxiety, better sleep quality, no need for controlled substances (I used to be a Klonopin addict...also an Adderall addict...), and I don't even need night time sleep aids much (rarely, I'll take a little Neurontin to sleep).

So...yeah...I guess I'll keep on doing it. My parents have been kind enough to shell out for it. I do find it interesting that a lot of the stuff I take seems to have anti-cancer properties.

Oh, yeah, Pizza....high dose vitamin C can help w/ regularity. I personally take time release, 2 doses, AM and PM. I'm up to 6 grams per dose, so 12 grams/day. The (cheap) brand I use also has citrus bioflavanoids in it, which...I honestly don't understand, lol. Can't hurt, I guess.

I'll have to re-start omega 3 for my mood. Predictably, it dips now and then (thankfully, I haven't had full-fledged psychotic depression in a nice, long while). I did find some research that indicates that, if you need a mood elevator, the omega 3 can help it work better, so that's a plus.

Yes, vitamin and herbal supplements work and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm always either in complete awe or simply amused at how doctors and the mainstream media demonize and utterly ridicule anyone who chooses a natural route to good health, when...lol...natural medicine has been around and used since, well, the beginning of time. Conventional, modern medicine, as we know it, has really only been around for 100-115 years or so.

I know that choosing alternative medicine is always the right choice. It's worked for me, it's worked for my siblings, it's worked for my parents, and it's worked for many other family members of mine and close family friends. We have far too many success stories for it alternative medicine to be a complete a hoax or dangerous to one's health. Herbs and vitamins...dangerous? LOL. But that's what Big Pharma wants you to believe, after all...if you choose an alternative route then they're out of money. Sickness and injury is a business for Big Pharma.

As for my own testimony - I've always suffered from extreme, debilitating pain during my monthly (I'm sorry if this is TMI). When I was about 16 my mother and I began researching what I could be deficient in (a huge, key factor cause of many illnesses and conditions - deficiencies) and what is good for relieving that sort of pain and whatnot. We found scores of information and since then I've been healing my pain naturally. Yes, I still have pain, but compared to before? There is no comparison. What I take a number of different supplements, but the main supplements I take that I know make the biggest difference are Magnesium, Vitamin D, Vitex Berry, and Progesterone (which nearly everyone woman is deficient in and needs to be taking). Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant, which plays a huge part in easing the cramps. The latest supplement I've incorporated into my regiment is Red Raspberry Leaf, which is also excellent to take while pregnant.

^All of this is not even the tip of the iceberg. ...Yes, vitamin and herbal supplements are safe, and yes, you should be taking them. To know what your levels are in what you're sufficient and deficient in, have full blood work done. And by full, I mean ALL the blood work testing that can be done...not the usual 'protocol' testing from a typical conventional doctor which consists of only a few tests.

Ive been drinking alot of green tea and it seems to be helping with weight loss and possibly expelling stored up stuff as I feel alot better with than without. And im taking glutamine about a tsp in 4 doses a day im approaching 40 and trying to keep physically active but keep injuring myself the glutamine seems to really help in the healing process.

Here in the Pacific Northwest winters a lot of people get depressed from the constant lack of sunshine (which means our bodies don't produce enough vitamin D), the rain, the unemployment, etc, etc. I've found St John's wort works really well when I'm feeling it. Probably not a substitute for counseling and prescription drugs for someone with severe clinical depression, but it's worked really well for me if I take it consistently.

yeah...there's this one brand of St.John's Wort that I've looked at...Perika (I think that's how its spelled). Its standardized, and its been used in clinical studies.

I've heard that's one of the problems with a lot of over the counter supplements. The lack of standardization means you aren't sure of what you're actually getting. If it doesn't work, is it because it doesn't work, or is it because the brand you bought is just a lousy product? A cousin who worked a lot with supplements told me that even within the same brand, different batches can have widely varying quality. I guess that's one of the problems we just have to live with if we aren't rich enough to pay for the high end prescription types.

yeah...I do Orthomolecular, which is mostly high doses of common vitamins, mostly C and various B vitamins. It seems to help...I mean, I don't have twitches or tardive dyskinesia and I'm calmer, but I wonder...am I actually consuming what I think I am?

It would blow your mind how simply tripling (or more) your intake of water will straighten out a world of supposed "ills".

Yea Willie you are absolutely correct.im trying to drink half gallon of water and half gallon of green tea right now, a gallon of water would be better I just am not comfortable with having to visit the restroom so often.

This is true. If you're going to take vitamin and herbal supplements you better make darn sure that you're taking a 'quality' supplement that's going to do its job. There are plenty of crap brands out there that contain some very bad ingredients along with the 'vitamin' or 'herb'. You don't want that. I always buy good brands and scrutinize the ingredients to be sure of what it is exactly that I'm getting. ...Yes, the better brands are more expensive, hence their good quality, but it's worth it and can be budgeted in if you give it some effort. I've been doing this for 8 years now.

Also very true. It cannot be stressed enough just how important it is for people to drink lots of water. If I had a dime for every person I met who says they 'hate water' and barely drink it. I'm sorry...are you a child? It's water for crying out loud. Make yourself drink it. It's not like you're making yourself drink 8 ounces of acid every hour. Our bodies need water, our bodies need to be properly hydrated. ...Our bodies especially need water right in the morning when you get up. And including fresh lemon juice (which alkalizes your body and diminishes acidity) and a pinch of pink Himalayan salt is even better.

Its not really a health supplement but I've seen people in other forums asking about Lidocaine patches for back ache and I can say they work great for me.I dont like ingesting pain meds but for me some topical analgesics are very beneficial.

This is what I do for my health:
1.I drink 3 cups of white tea a day.I put raw local honey in my tea.Very healthy.White tea is the healthiest of all the teas.It is very low in caffeine which I do not do well with.I someone is used to a lot of caffeine and coffee they would not do well with white tea.Perhaps black tea.
2. I also have been avoiding anything with food coloring. You can't avoid it all because many things have food coloring in them including medications.I would like it if the FDA did away with food coloring.
3. When my knee or leg start to ache with the weather change I take black cherry concentrate capsules.I try to stay away from ibuprofen. It can damage your kidneys.

There was I time when I was processing fish and on my feet for 20 hrs a day in a giant wet refrigerator I was taking 12 Tylenol and ibuprofen a day .That stuff put a whole in my stomach.
