Basically because the scripture tells us this.

Consider the Pharisees, just stood next to them but did they know who He was/is?

And even John the Baptist and the disciples, they also missed the reality of who Jesus was/is, thinking more along the lines of Messiah.

Seeing God is the first point of revelation, because revelation is simply God seen.
