Aspiring Authors?

No, I do not remember. We may of not have gotten any when it first came out though so that could be why.

Rachel:

I would guess about 10 years, anyway. Suddenly arrived on the scene with a lot of publishers' blurbs and advertisements.

On the other thing, it's the most important to cultivate the inward and spiritual, first and foremost, even though taking care with make up is important. It's heart matters that really take precedence.

Blessings.

Ah, okay. I can imagine how the ESV must of gone over with a church that we tried visiting about 10 years ago. It would not of been pretty.

I completely agree! I have actually read a really good book on trying to be inwardly beautiful and take care of your appearance at the same time. But that is probably not describing it well, it was a great book.

Rachel: Was the place kind of King James Only? (I like the King James, mind; I'm just not King James Only.)

I see; so do you remember the title of the book? anyway, it's true that the inward and spiritual come first. 'The Lord looketh upon the heart' (1 Samuel 16.7). But anyway, the other side is still important; and it's not just make up for women; like for example, it's said that in terms of formality, when a man should wear a tie, a woman should put in her earrings; kind of a guideline, rather than a 'rule'; this has changed a bit though, I think.

Blessings.

It was very KJV only. They had a lot of extra-biblical rules and did not like that we did not agree with all of them. There was a big stink when they found out we were not "dresses-only". And when they found out that we believe evangelism is important because they said you should only witness to someone if the Lord tells you to, despite scripture that says otherwise. When we left they told us we would be cast to Satan because we were not under their protection. I have a lot of interesting church stories from when we were trying to find the right one.

Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman. It also greatly depends on the social situation as well. Our church is more of a country/family church and so ties don't really fit in. So I would say dress appropriately for the situation.

Rachel:

Yes, well, my problem is that it's right to regard the King James as a translation, a good one, but in the end it's the Greek and Hebrew that are also the ultimate reference points; whereas some of the King James Only folk think that there was advanced revelation into the English of the King James, or so it seems that they think. Some (often smaller) churches do have a mindset that is King James Only, no piercings, no pants for women, no tattoos, etc., but we where go I'm thankful that it's not this way.

Okay, ty; book probably mainly applicable to women, I guess.

Blessings.

Yeah, the Greek and Hebrew are more reliable than the King James. Some of the KJV only people also argue that the King James is the only version to read but when asked what about people in other countries that don't speak English they don't know what to think. Our pastor actually used to be KJV only but when his professor asked if people in China should be able to have the Bible in their language he saw that the King James Bible is not the only option. Now he likes ESV but he by no means thinks it is the only translation that should be used.

Yeah, it is definitively not a book for a guy. ;)

Okay, I see. Good that he has managed to modify his outlook, anyway.

Seems to me that the King James Only thing, though, is also part of a broader mindset, though; this is why I mentioned it in conjunction with no piercings, no pants for women, no tattoos, etc.. Not just a viewpoint, but a mindset: a culture about perpetuating a past culture that hardly now exists.

I do like the King James, though.

Blessings.

I have noticed that as well. Everyone I know who is KJV only is that way as well. A lot of them are against dying hair and makeup as well.

Rachel: ...and no piercings or tattoos are often 'thrown in', for good measure.

Like I said, it's kind of a mindset thing, rather than a specific viewpoint.

But being King James Only seems part of it.

Blessings.

Exactly. And I find a lot of them just have not done enough study in it for themselves to really know, but it is what their church believes or they have been told and they believe it.

Rachel:

Yes, well, if they really considered that what the Bible is, is the divine record that speaks to their consciences, which are purged by the blood of Christ Who offered Himself by the Eternal Spirit without spot (Hebrews 9.14), then they wouldn't see it all as a matter of rules and regulations that supposedly make them more holy.

Get pierced; don't get pierced. Go under the needle for some ink; don't go under the needle: instead of sanctification by outward rules and regulations, it's inwardly and spiritually that the Lord first and foremost changes us and cleans us and turns us inside out and the right way round!

Blessings.

It is sad that sometimes they can be so biased. I know many people who before they were saved lived very worldly lives but they turned their life around and love the Lord greatly but due to their appearance are shunned by other Christians. It is a good lesson to not judge others because they look different than us.

Well, exactly; ttyl, blessings.

Rachel:

Hard to think such a position could even be maintained. (And your family with all the girls...) :)

Blessings.

Yeah, well most of the people who think it is wrong to wear pants still have rules to get out of it. We knew one family who thought it was wrong to wear pants, unless it was below 70 degrees. I have found a lot of the very strong "dresses only" people have some rules how they are not always bad. But if they believe they are immodest that should not change due to the weather.

Rachel:

We seem not to be talking particularly about books and the King James any more; maybe this would be a better subject for a new thread from you... :chin

(Food for thought.)

Blessings.

That's a good idea, though I don't think I have anymore I want to currently say on the subject.

Rachel:

There are a lot of books out there, I think, which deal with the subject of combining what's tasteful with modesty.

Often 'you just know', I guess.

I do think a lot of emphasis needs to be put on books on Christian doctrine; the central tenets of the Biblical faith, and so forth. God works inwardly, to the outside via the inward. Maybe your local church has got a book collection, or would consider one.

Blessings.

I'm not myself, but I know several since I work at a library. It's an extremely tough field to break into. One young lady I know has just published her first about a month ago and has 18 novels finished. Finding a publisher was a nightmare and now getting noticed is just as bad. Another wrote one about 15 years back and those are sitting in his garage and yet another has had the same misfortune. Today's print on demand does solve that problem though but still with 2400,000+ just on Amazon the odds are stacked against they young author. In traditional publishing I've read over 80% of promotion money is spent on 5% of the authors. The rest are fighting for crumbs. The solution, write because you love it, not for the money!

jk123:

I guess it's hit and miss!

But you do need a love for words, yes, if you are going to write.

It must be interesting for you to work in a library, anyway.
