What keeps you awake at Night?<O:p</O:p<O:p</O:p
There are nights that counting sheeps is not very effective. Why? And what do you do?

Ok, I’ll start. For me, usually over fatigue is the reason because of overworked in the daytime it would corrupt my snooze. Coffee with “worry creamer” is also a factor to that . Changing positions in the bed sometimes helps but mostly I’m frustrated because I hear somebody is snoring in the other room. ...

Proverbs 23-24 “ They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly

I have a most unhealthy sleep cycle. I never sleep more than 4 or 5 hours. If I go to sleep at 11:30-12:00, I'm wide awake at 4:00am! It's nice to be so awake to exercise and still get to work early, and to have some real quiet time on the weekends, but I know it's not healthy. What am I to do? I'm not tired during the day, so it kinda works for me. :shrug

I hate to sleep. I never want to sleep at all because, the more you stay awake the more information your brain can process and more age and experience you will become compared to others. For example, if a person went to sleep at 8pm and wakes at 6am sleeps an avg of 10 hrs a day, that's (3650 hrs a yr or 152 days!). But if the person sleeps at 12am and woke at 6am, sleeping just 6 hrs, then he will sleep only 91 days, which means, he will be awake more than 61 days compared to the person who slept 152 days in a year.

Anyone could argue that this sounds good theoretically but is it practically possible as people will get tired and not able to concentrate the day ahead?

The answer is Yes! it is practically possible. In fact, man just require only 2 hrs of sleep. But the fact is not about a plain 2 hr sleep but a split of 6 - 20 minute sleep cycle around the clock - called polyphasic sleep. It is scientifically proven that the brain repairs and does all essential stuff to make us fresh after a sleep is only during a REM phase (or rapid eye movement) and all the other phases are useless. So, when someone doesn't sleep for a long time, REM kicks in immediately as a precautionary mechanism to repair and do all necessary stuff to make us refreshing. This is why when someone is very tired, they go into a deep sleep quickly. There is also another advantage to polyphasic sleep as it allows the dreamer to hack the dream - meaning, you will have conscience while dreaming and you will be able control your own dream (heard about the movie Inception? it's based on this concept) and have full memory of your dream.

So, having a 20 minute sleep every 4 hrs allows to make your brain go into REM, repair all the required and does all necessary to make you feel fresh and at the same time, you will be awake inside your dream as well.

With 'polyphasic sleep', you will never get into a situation where you want to sleep as you are tired, instead you immediately go into deep sleep (REM) and wake up in 20 minutes fully refreshed with no sleep required.

If I want to sleep I sleep. Of I don't I just don't. But usually nothibg can keep me up

I guess I have a sort of modified polyphasic sleep cycle... I rarely if ever sleep more than a few hours at a time, unless I'm sick the way I was this last week. One night, when I was recovering from the flu bug that Thomas seems to have brought home from school, I slept from 5:00pm to 6:00am...

That's not my "normal" though.... Usually I go to bed or lay on the couch around 3:00am...sleep until 5:00 when I have to get the kids up for school... then I take a nap from about 7:30 to around 10:00am... and sometimes take about a 15-20 minute nap around 2:30-3:00pm... And that's it... that's about all the sleep I get.

I don't know that this is all that great... It seems that since I've gotten into this pattern of sleep, I'm far more susceptible to colds and flus than I have ever been before. And, the time I'm awake at night isn't productive time. I used to do my work then, but found I made more mistakes when I worked on things at 1:00-2:00am... and naturally, I can't do much housework then, because everyone else is asleep.

I long for the days when I would go to bed, fall asleep and not wake up for 6-7 hours. I just think I was healthier, more productive and certainly less depressed then.

I'm pretty regular with my sleep routine, but if I'm ever restless it's usually because of the below listed.

1. Something family related is bothering me and I can't get it off my mind.
2. Allergy season and I'm out of meds.
3. I had a Rockstar beverage anytime during that day.

Edit to add:
4. The dog gets out and is chasing animals and barking all night long!!!!!!!!

MELATONIN

Being a new mom sleep was something to dream about.... ya get over the little kid stage and then your awake because those sweet babies are teens! then the aches and pains of getting older :sad takes your sleep.... I thank God for melatonin. Just 3 mg every evening they are cheep and for me work well! About 6 hours is enough then a crash of about 8 hours every couple weeks....

Does it make one sleep so deeply that one would have trouble waking up?

I tend to not want to sleep too deeply at night, because Steve usually isn't here and I'm afraid that I would sleep through something when I'm needed... Which, considering either kid would wake me is probably pretty silly.

But, it was when Steve started staying in town during the week with his job that I stopped sleeping the night through.

I once tried a sleeping tablet that the doctor gave Steve during this change over in meds and sort of freaked out with it... kept having thoughts that I would die during the night, so I refuse to ever use a sleeping pill again... but, melatonin shouldn't have a reaction like that, I'm sure.

I can only relay what it does for me..... Its about the same as the Thanksgiving day nap without the stuffed feeling....

Surgery and chemo time, i had some sleeping pills they did their job but i was goofy i did not react to them well.... I dont believe the melatonin has any ill side affects for me.

2-3 in the afternoon is my cut off time for caffeine. i take the melatonin about 9:30 -10 most often sleep through the nite..

There have been a couple time for crazy reasons i have had to be awake after taking the pill not a problem like sleeping pills....

Reba,

Are you taking it under Doctor's orders? It does have some good side effects, but some bad ones too, like irritability and anxiety.

Jeff,

You shouldn't even be drinking Rockstar. That stuff is loaded with caffeine and that's not good for the heart or water retention. It's worse than a coffee.

Take something with B12 instead.

For me, an over-stimulated brain for whatever reason is enough to keep me up. But usually, I can attribute it to the naps I take after work on the train. :lol

My Doctor who happens to also be my brother knows i take it I take very few meds..

i dont need no stinking pill to make me irritable. :grumpy...

The only issue is that between the hours of 10-6AM at least for men im not sure about women growth hormones are released in large numbers. And you grow more through a regular sleep cycle.

Not just for boys but for men too when you work out some or improve your health in the way of growth this growth should occur at night.

Caffeine, especially in it's natural form, is good for most people, but not all.

Also remember, it is a diuretic, so caffeine intake should be complemented with water intake.

HE giveth HIS beloveth sleep
Whenever it comes, wherever you are - obey the call of nature.

And Felix? :confused

The verse you mentioned must be read with context:

(Ps 127:1-2) A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. [It is] vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; [For] so He gives His beloved sleep.

Just like verse 1, even if we work late in night and rise up early to work, we will be having only grief unless we have God on our side. The sleep which is mentioned is to say, you can't sleep well unless you finish your work (the very reason you had to sacrifice your sleep to work) and it is God who finishes your work and gives you sleep.

(Prov 20:13) Do not love sleep ...
