The purpose of the Bible teacher is not to set up his own throne and gather his own followers but is to present the truth as simply as possible. Like all gifts, the intention.is to serve, not rule, and to bring glory to Jesus and not ourselves. I have found that those who teach the truth have no interest in their ministry for their own sakes. but those who teach error expose their motives, some clearly and others more artfully. The so-called God channels reveal the spirit of the world not of Christ. Many reveal themselves by asking for money!! They are deceivers and false teachers but as we saw in. 2 Timothy their success is guaranteed. As the LORD said it is the blind leading the blind.
The truth is that the Church has not evangelised the world but the world has evangelised the Church.
It is a terrible truth that most Christians do not want the meat of the WORD which, even with excellent bible teaching, means they need to get a concordance, check out all they are taught and spend at least 5 hours a week in the Scriptures. The thing is that the more we get to know about the way GOD thinks, only possible from the Bible as we work with the underlying Holy Spirit, the most time we want to spend with HIM in HIS WORD.
So check the motives and then go to James 3:1. The section on James 3:1-18 deals with the control of the tongue and develops a point he made in James 1:19 and that is "be slow to speak, be slow to wrath" The context in James 1 is our reaction to true Bible teaching for the truth of God offends our evil minds. As Paul stated in Romans 12:1-2 our minds have to be transformed by the New Testament epistles.
James begins a. New section with "my brethren" He is writing from within the land of Israel exclusively to Jewish believers outside of the land. Here he deals with the tongue in reference to the ministry bible teaching. He is not dealing with false teaching per second but that might be included. James ( real name is Jacob in English) focuses on the most dangerous misuse of the tongue. He focuses on ungifted, or even if gifted they are untrained and lacking in enough knowledge as yet, teachers. He states" Be not many of you teachers". The position of instructor allows for the greatest misuse of the tongue in disseminating false doctrine in the church. Those who teach must have the gift and be recognised by other mature believers as having that gift before using it. The attention here is on public teaching to other believers as we can all help one another in a one to one basis, but even then fear the LORD and do not try to deal with an issue in which you have no complete understanding.
Here James uses the negative imperative in the present tense. Be not tells us there has been a movement to become Bible teachers for those inflicted to be so. The command " Be Not " reflects the authority of the apostle. The statement "not many" clearly tells us that in their cardinality some were seeking to use a gift not given them. As 1 Corinthians 12 tells us the gifts and offices are given sovereignly by the Godhead at the point of salvation.
What people seem to ignore is the warning "knowing that we shall receive the heavier judgment" The use of the first person plural tells us that James was a teacher, and of course, all the apostles were equipped by God to teach and had many years training. While he would encourage those who have the gift of Bible teaching to use that gift, He points out that only a few in proportion to the local churches have the necessary gifting fro the Holy Spirit. The moves to the future tense for this judgment of Bible teachers will take place at the Judgment Seat of Christ in 1 Corinthians 3:10-15. The reason that error in Bible teaching is heavier than the use of the other gifts is obvious, in that it carries the position of greatest influence.
False teachers are unbelievers anyway and will be cast into the Lake of Fire with all unbeliever and because of these, they will not be at the Judgment Seat of Christ. However, this is a real warning to inflicted or untrained believers first and foremost. If any of us teaches any doctrinal error without rectification then it will mean heavy judgment. Of course, that judgment cannot affect our salvation but as taught in 1 Corinthians 3 can mean the loss of rewards. Web are called to be faithful servants.
Let us see a glaring example of false teachers, and hence the lost destined for eternal judgment. In Matthew 23:9 the LORD, just prior to the Cross and the start of the Church age 50 days later, gives an easily understood command. You either believe HIM or not. HE states " And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your FATHER, even HE WHO is in heaven" This is dead simple and yet a massive abomination of a religious system was set up in opposition to the holiness of the LORD. Jesus had taught, more than once on the honour we owe to our human parents so that no one can honestly think that this relates to the sanctity of family. This statement clearly refers to a religious context. Jesus goes on to warn I Matthew 23:10 that from then on only HE was to be called rabbi. In 2 verses HE exposes the greatest evil in the Church age and the evil of secular pharisaic Judaism.
The place of biblical religion, I prefer spirituality, is always seen to serve. The whole ethos of Catholicism is based on rulership, biblically an abomination. This system, the largest part of the apostate visible church, calls its leader pope, which.means a father. Then there are local fathers/ priests. This is exactly why Jesus made HIS statement.Consistently in the Bible GOD gives a specific warning about something and man deliberately rejects the authority of the LORD.
Getting back to the false religion spoken of in Matthew 23:9-10 the whole hierarchal system of much of the visible church is in rebellion to GOD. Another great evil is that the.mass re-crucifies JESUS time after time and yet HE died once, and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous.
An abomination in the Bible is something that goes against GOD's created order. Dealing with the error of secular Judaism today, founded on the appointment of unbelieving rabbis, incredibly some women, the problem began about 400 BC when biblical Judaism was gradually changed to Pharisaic Judaism in the intertestamental period. Masses of additional teaching. Again added to the Law of Moses rendering the original to be torn to pieces. The whole essence of falsehood in the first century Israel was the emphasis on the external without dealing with the internal first.
