Bible translations

so being a jew isn't that a label? does any actually know where that word came from? I do. in the captivity the word jew is used in the armaic tounge to describe the Judeans(yudea in Hebrew) with hatred. yet the jews took that label and still say it. seldom have I heard a man same I am a YEHUDI. im sure they do if they are speaking in Hebrew to another Hebrew but most cant speak Hebrew. my dad can no longer.

well since we are talking about my heritage. jews are divided into three main groups today. the Ashkenazi, the separdic and the Yemenite(yes as in the Yemen nations). each of these are all jewish but do the traditions with a unique flair. ie weddings and slight and minor things with the feasts. I don't know the difference just read that they do. I fit in the Ashkenazi, if you really are acute in the bible. that is a biblical name for one of the seventy nations and its used by them as that is where they went? EUROPE!!!!but that excludes spain and Portugal as that is where the separdic comes in that they went there.yiddish is found in only the askenazi generally.

I will bow out with nothing more being said on this subject. That being said, it behooves me to think that I cannot learn from another believer whether they call themselves Catholic, Pentecostal, Messianic Jew, or whatever the flair is of the day. Test all things against scripture, not on denominations or labels.

I understand. I wasn't meant to be derogatory. i go by what they said." we aren't Christians , while we consider them to be brethren they are gentiles we are saved jews and do the feasts and the torah" that is from messianic jews in a video talking about being spit by jews.

So as I've been romping throughout the forums just getting to know the different forums better and reading various bits (I really like the Testimonies forum particularly :D), I've become a bit curious over different users' preferences for their bible translations.

As someone currently learning Ancient Greek for the particular outlook of eventually being able to read the New Testament as it would have been during the time of the first Christians, how some will say one version is better by far than the others and others will say another is better than the others really interests me.

As many of us do favour particular versions (I myself am becoming a bit partial to the Holman), I wonder what are all your different thoughts about biblical translation and what would you say were some reasons for your own favourite versions?

Right now I'm wrestling with whether to use the KJV or NKJV as my primary translation. I do compare with several other translations though, ESV, NASB, HCSB. My 12 year old daughter uses the NKJV and was just saved and baptized this past weekend

I downloaded a Bible app on my iPod, and you can download translations on there. Seems that only the translations using the TR are available for download, though. But hey, I got the 1599 Geneva Bible and Young's Living Translation out of it! I like the YLT so far.

You can still access all the others as long as you have wifi. I'm guessing they aren't available for actual download due to copyrights.

12 is a nice age for a young person truly to trust the Lord, before the inroads of sin get too deep a grip.
