Bible Study Brotherly Love

Speaking the truth in love is important. Some things must be said. Also, when receiving counsel or a reply, remember you as the reader may have a propensity to assign vocal inflections to the written text. You may jump to an inference that wasn't implied by the writer. This has always been a problem for me. I think James 1:19 is important here.

Good advice in that verse Papa Zoom. It is so easy to take offence from the written word, because you cannot see the person nor can you hear their tone of voice.

Agreed some things have to be said.
 
This is a topic that should not have to be brought up, but needs to be brought up so thank you Tessa.

Many different types of religions have been trying to teach us Gods word through their own doctrines and interpretations and this is what is pinning Christian against Christian, religion against religion through debating and arguing Gods word to the point of heated discussions. It is no wonder that those who do not know God turn away and want nothing to do with anything they hear. Confusion brings with it frustration and drives people away, but if love is displayed above all it will draw others to that light of Christ that needs to be shining through us even if we do not agree all the time.


1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. I think we have to stop and think how we say things. Like Papa Zoom said in his post. Sometimes people reply in disagreement, in a hurtful way. I don't think they mean to, but accusing people of being something that they are not is the opposite of showing love. If it happens to me I try to answer with love, if it carries on I walk away, and pray for them.

The scripture you quoted is so clear. Verse 20 says we cannot love God and hate our brother.

Micah 4:1-2

Brotherly Love​

Hello Tessa. John appears to expound on that in his epistles:

1Jo 2:10 he who is loving his brother, in the light he doth remain, and a stumbling-block in him there is not;
1Jo 3:10 In this manifest are the children of God, and the children of the devil; every one who is not doing righteousness, is not of God, and he who is not loving his brother,
1Jo 3:14 we -- we have known that we have passed out of the death to the life, because we love the brethren; he who is not loving the brother doth remain in the death.

1Jo 4:20 if any one may say -- 'I love God,' and his brother he may hate, a liar he is; for he who is not loving his brother whom he hath seen, God -- whom he hath not seen -- how is he able to love? 21 and this is the command we have from Him, that he who is loving God, may also love his brother.

Jesus mentions the 6th Assembly of Philadelphia in Revelation, which literally means "brotherly love". [The opposite of the 4th Assembly in Thyatira.......]

Some say John of the Gospel and his Epistles is the same one that that visioned Revelation ["I John".....Rev 1:9 Rev 22:8.]

Revelation 3:
7 And to the Messenger of the Assembly in Philadelphia write!
Now this is saying the True One, the Holy One, the One having the Key of David and the One opening and no one shall be locking, and locking and no one is opening. 8 I am aware of the works of thee, behold! I have given in view of thee a door having been opened which no one is able to lock. That little power thou art having and thou keep the word of Me and disown the name of Me 9 Behold! The Greek word for Philadelphia is Philadelphos and its meaning is “one who loves his brother.” Philadelphia was a young city founded and colonized by people from Pergamos.
Of the seven churches, two of them received no indictment from the Lord, nor were they told to repent. The church in Smyrna was known as the “suffering church” because of their severe persecutions, and they were not told to repent. The Lord saw their trouble and tribulation, their poverty and imprisonment, their unswerving steadfastness and great faithfulness, and they did not need to be told to repent. It was in their hearts to repent when the need arose, for the work of God ran deep in their lives.
In fact, not one negative thing is said about the church in Philadelphia!
We can benefit from the positive things said..............................

Religion and politics can sometimes be like mixing dirt with water, making "mud".......as the 1st century Jews found out in 70ad.......

Jhn 19:
12 From this time was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, 'If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.'

Heb 7:28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;

Coincidentally, the 1st century Roman currency is mentioned in Revelation concerning the famine of 70ad Jerusalem....

Thank you for those beautiful verses of John's. Thry definitely show just how important brotherly love is. I an going to read them a few more times. Wow! We can't love God if we don't love our brother, that is a very strong statement.
My phone won't play the sound on the video. I will try to find out why.

Hello Tessa and thank you. I have found that a lot of names, places, events, etc in the Bible generally have a meaning, both in the Hebrew and Greek.

In my rather in depth studies of the 7 Churches, one I found particularly interesting is the 2nd Church, Smyrna, which is said to be a derivative of "myrrh"
Myrrh is shown in 2 verses, at both the birth and death/burial of our Lord Jesus.........

G4666 matches the Greek (smyrna), occurs 2 times in 2verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV
Mat 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.<4666>
Jhn 19:39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[fn]

4666. smurna smoor'-nah apparently strengthened for 3464; myrrh:--myrrh.
4667. Smurna smoor'-nah the same as 4666; Smyrna, a place in Asia Minor:--Smyrna
Smyrna means “sweet smelling” and comes from the root word for myrrh.

myrrh, a symbol of sorrow, suffering, and death, an apt picture of the trials, troubles, and tribulations through which we are passing on our journey into perfection....
Myrrh was used to embalm the bodies of the dead. Carefully the linens were prepared, and wound around the bodies of the loved ones, while myrrh was packed between the folds of the cloth. Thus was the body of our Lord embalmed!

After the death of Jesus, the women, who had loved and followed Him on earth, brought one hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes to the tomb. With what grief did they take that precious body and wind about it the linen cloths! With what untold tenderness did they lay it away in the bed of fragrant spices!
Thus myrrh is a type of suffering and death, and some in the church at Smyrna were to pass through bitter persecution, severe trials, and intense testings, as a picture of that which all of God’s called and chosen elect must also pass through. Their sufferings, however, instead of destroying them, would give forth the rich perfume of heaven, the life of the spirit!

We know a lot of Revelation is historical, such as Revelation 12 showing the birth and ascension of Jesus.

Matthew 1:21 and she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.’ [Micah 5:2]
Luke 2:7 and she brought forth her Son — the first-born, and wrapped Him, and laid Him down in the manger, because there was not for them a place in the guest-chamber. [Revelation 12:5]

Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a Son, a male, Who is being about to be shepherding all the nations in iron rod/staff.

I would like to believe I love everyone like Jesus commanded us to do. But the truth is I have been drawn into many debates on this forum and that is not love. I need to let others have their own opinion, even if that opinion is unloving. Letting people be a "work in progress" is love. Tolerance is love. Restraint of pen and tongue (AA) is love. Acceptance is love. Love is many things, least among these is that love is hard sometimes.

This may be all true but there are times when love demands correction. In other words, it may not be loving to ignore sinful behavior for the sake of tolerance for to continue in sinful behavior could be leading to death.

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Galatians 6:1 NKJV

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:1-2 NKJV

“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector." Matthew 18:15-17 NKJV

Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality. 1 Timothy 5:19-21 NKJV
