INTRODUCTION: Deuteronomy is largely a sermon, or set of sermons, preached by Moses to all of Israel shortly before his death and not long before the conquest of the land under the leadership of Joshua. It is a motivational sermon, urging Israel's faithful obedience to the covenant laws of Sinai given 40 years previously.

I would love to have jasonc StoveBolts both here for the study... Hopefully we can get a room full and all be in one accord? :confused2

Any who might want to join in please do so..We do not HAVE to agree we state our thoughts , scripture backup and move on...

I would like to be part of this, if I may. Will it be this thread or should I look for another?

I will read up on deutermony one and go to adam Clarke since I don't have ramban's commentary on that book. likely Clarke will be close to ramban. Clarke used the Hebrew words and jewish Talmud at times and posted what they say. he is the only Christian that has ever done that. www.studylight.org has the entire commentary of his.

got one.

The river Euphrates - Thus Moses fixes the bounds of the land, to which on all quarters the territories of the Israelites might be extended, should the land of Canaan, properly so called, be found insufficient for them. Their South border might extend to the mount of the Amorites; their West to the borders of the Mediterranean Sea; their North to Lebanon; and their East border to the river Euphrates: and to this extent Solomon reigned; see Verse Reference
21 Now Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
" tooltipenable="true" translation="">1 Kings 4:21. So that in his time, at least, the promise to Abraham was literally fulfilled; see below

im reading Clarke's commentary and will be posting what I see. theres more boring stuff on the location that I see but nothing to post about.

Should be an interesting study. I'll chime in when I can. 4, 6 and 28 are some of my favorite chapters. I enjoy Adam Clarke, Rashi and Ramban as far as my favorite commentators. You can view Rashi from chabad.org

I will be in the background reading and learning.

Would love to have you join in. We read a chapter and then post any thoughts that we have. We all try and keep it simple. No super theologians here! Just a few of us who enjoy studying together. Reba and I would love to have you join us.

Try to see the implication of taking the promised land as a blueprint for restoring our soul and renewing our mind, so that we are transformed into the Image of His Son.

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Deuteronomy 2 show us the first strongman we are to deal with, in order to have success. In order to perceive and plan and have a strategy.

If we review the first words ever spoken to Mankind, and see the implication of this, that our purpose has not changed and that the Gospel is a reiteration of what the first words the Lord told to Adam and Eve, and are still just as pertinent for us today.

rashi isn't easy to post here as the way that chabad has that set up.

I was taught years ago that Deuteronomy was the restatement of the law ie, Leviticus. The "second law" I think was the term. I'm keen to learn about Deut it isn't a Book I've read much and it's in the Bible :).

The name "Deuteronomy" is made from two Greek words that mean "second law". Moses was repeating it to the people because every adult who had been at Sinai had died, except for Moses, Joshua and Caleb. I'm at work now, but at home I have a study I did on this a while back. I'd have to look it up to be sure, but I think the first chapter of Deuteronomy mentions that it was an 11 day journey from Sinai to where they were. God had actually lead them straight to the promised land from Mt. Sinai, but they rejected the opportunity to enter, and so God lead them through the wilderness for 40 years.

Chapter 1 Here we have knowledge of why God's people had to journey around Mt. Horeb (Mt Sinai) for 40 years.

Moses, before his death, took the Law given to him at Mt. Sinai, and in essence, preached the meaning of the Law. It is similar to what preachers do today, they take a text and expound it's meaning. That is, Godly preachers.:biggrin

Because Israel rebelled against the Lord in seizing the promised land, as punishment, God made them wander in the wilderness for 40 years going around Mt. Horeb.

We see the first form of government established with heads of each Tribe. "Wise and experienced" to become commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. A very wise system. Not at all like our system of government, seldom are our leaders "wise" in God's standards, or "experienced" in God's ways, no wonder we're so messed up. :lol

V.39 explains those who will enter the promised land. Since the adults rebelled against the Lord, they would die off in the wilderness, but their children, since they don't know good & evil, they will have the honor to go in under the leadership of Joshua. He and Caleb were the only ones who believed the Lord.....Here we have the beginning of setting the "age of accountability" for a child. Later on, we will see the exact age.

I WANT TO THANK THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE STARTED THIS STUDY WITH US! For those of you who can't join us every day, don't worry, just join in when you can. Your participation will be greatly welcomed.

The generation that had so many blessings, whined and wondered they complained and wondered.. built a golden calf and wondered...So many of us today do the same.... We will not see what Joshua and Caleb saw... we see the giants in the land and miss the glories and blessings of the Lord...I am sure J&C saw the big army they did not dwell on them they dwelt on the blessing of the rich fruit...
So much of Christianity dwells on the giant (antichrist) then the blessing of the first fruits.Jesus... We look around and and dwell on negative. Look at the way we pick apart something like the movie The Son of God... How long will we wonder in wilderness?
Do we choose wise men as leaders or the flashy 'used car salesmen type? Do we honor the hoary heads of wisdom?

Deu 1:10 The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
Deu 1:11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
Those of you who deal in the numbers in scripture of what value/meaning is there to a number squared?

Deu 1:20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.
Deu 1:21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

Heb 12:18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
Heb 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Heb 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

to be continued :tongue
