Bible Study CALLING ALL BIBLE STUDY ENTHUSIASTS! Come and join us for an indepth study of the Book of Deut.

Chapter 8 The whole wilderness experience experience started out as a punishment for failing to realize that Israel was not to take the Promised Land by their might and power, but solely by God's power....You see, God doesn't need our puny little efforts to sustain us or to get victory over a bad situation, HE WANTS TO DO IT and then He wants to hear us PRAISE HIM! We have to remember that our God is a jealous God! Since we are His creation of life, He wants to sustain us. He is most pleased when He hears from my lips, "Oh God, thank you, I could not have done that".

Jehovah proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that He, being their God, their only God could be trusted to supply all their needs for life in a wilderness with no food stores, no clothing stores, no shoe stores. Idolatry, which our God hates, is when we think that God Himself can't fulfill a need that we have Himself, so we go after another source to help. NOT GOOD!

God's provisions are tied to His Commands, Statues, and Rules. If the people obeyed God, they would be protected, and provided for.

The point, IMO, of being humbled is, to completely rely on God for everything to do with life and happiness. This God of ours is most pleased when we put aside our own methods of survival, go about our daily functions, what ever that is for each of us, and look into God's Promises and instruction, trusting in Him to supply for our well being.

Pride is when we become self-sufficient, and boast of our accomplishments instead of boasting in God's provisions, thus bringing glory to God rather than themselves.

Deu 8:1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

Jos 21:43 And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.
Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
Jos 21:45 There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.

Deu 8:7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
Deu 8:8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;
Deu 8:9 A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.
Deu 8:10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

Joh 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Joh 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
Joh 6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
Joh 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
Joh 6:57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
Joh 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

Deu 8:18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
Heb 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

Heb 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

NOTICE: As we continue in our study of Deuteronomy, and possibly the Book of Joshua after, I feel that it's important to express what is our understanding rather than our favorite commentator. If we quote someone Else's work, we should post that reference, otherwise all other comments will be our own. Lets just make it clear when we quote from someone other than our own knowledge....thanks.

In looking back at all the posts, I think I am the only one who has quoted from a source, in post #98.
I put at the end of the quote, that it is from esword, it not from a website, but from that software. I thought that it was written by the authors of the software and they quote the Rabbi Simeon ben Joachi but looking at it again I see this little blue button at the top of the page that says TSK,
they quoted from the "Treasury of Scripture Knowledge" which can be found at, http://www.biblestudytools.com/concordances/treasury-of-scripture-knowledge/deuteronomy-6-4.html
Thanks for making your post I wasn't aware of this commentary source and will be using it often seeing that it gives the Jewish view of the OT scriptures.

I found the Jewish understanding and importance of verse 6:4 to be quite compelling. A more complete description for verse 6:8, would be that the phylacteries are the right arm, arm bands and headbands with tiny boxes attached containing the Torah worn by the Jewish priests. They are still worn today by some.

Young's Literal Translation
Deu 8:3 `And He doth humble thee, and cause thee to hunger and doth cause thee to eat the manna (which thou hast not known, even thy fathers have not known), in order to cause thee to know that not by bread alone doth man live, but by every produce of the mouth of Jehovah man doth live.
Mat 4:3 And the Tempter having come to him said, `If Son thou art of God--speak that these stones may become loaves.'
Mat 4:4 But he answering said, `It hath been written, Not upon bread alone doth man live, but upon every word coming forth from the mouth of God.'

Deu 8:5 and thou hast known, with thy heart, that as a man chastiseth his son Jehovah thy God is chastising thee,
1Co 11:32 and being judged by the Lord, we are chastened, that with the world we may not be condemned;
Rev 3:19 `As many as I love, I do convict and chasten; be zealous, then, and reform;

Deu 8:15 who is causing thee to go in the great and the terrible wilderness--burning serpent, and scorpion, and thirst--where there is no water; who is bringing out to thee waters from the flinty rock;
1Co 10:2 and all to Moses were baptized in the cloud, and in the sea;
1Co 10:3 and all the same spiritual food did eat,
1Co 10:4 and all the same spiritual drink did drink, for they were drinking of a spiritual rock following them, and the rock was the Christ;

I believe also they were warned even hundreds of years earlier to change their ways and to get out of the Promised Land but they did not listen.

The other reason they are destroyed is because they hate God's people and seek to do them harm; just like a husband and a wife are in a marriage blood covenant, and the husband would absolutely, even under the Law of Love/Grace/Liberty which we are now under, physically terminate the life of anyone who swore to harm his wife, so too does the Lord take the covenant He is in with us seriously - all we must do is believe Him to protect us and call upon Him in faith, and He will. So these fools that followed the Devil said they were going to bust up God's people, He said nope, and destroyed them to honor His name and fulfill the covenant.
We have also His weapons: the Name, the Blood, the Word, the Anointing, the Spirit (all dispensed while wearing the Armor).
:agreed

Oh boy, Deuteronomy 8! Look at how God had provided all His people's needs out in the wilderness, BUT all the while He said His perfect will was that His people come into a land He had prepared ahead of time for them, the land He promised, that had milk and honey FLOWING. The land of Canaan, the land of more than enough, the land of all your needs met and then surplus above that, for any who would believe it.
WOW! Look at God saying WHEN, ALL, ALL, ALL you have is MULTIPLIED and look at Him saying that He gives His people POWER TO GET WEALTH, and it so that He may establish His covenant going back to Abraham (which is now fulfilled in Jesus), which is the blessing (which is literally the empowerment to prosper, which goes with Proverbs 10:22, that the Blessing of the Lord makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it (no toil)).
In other words, being blessed with the blessing of Abraham, which is the Blessing of the Lord (Gal 3:13-14) means that we have the power on us to get wealth, this anointing for wealth. Which also goes in with Psalm 112, which is to any Believer who will take it, that wealth and riches shall be in my house, because of the 1st 2 verses.
This is like a cannon to the head of the poverty preaching.

Chapter 9 There is a great message in the first three verses of this Chapter. Whatever stands in the way of the Lord our God's plan for our lives, however big, however bad, and however impossible for man to conquer, our God is more than able to subdue. With God, the Scripture promises, nothing is impossible with God.

V.4 Establishes a position of power. Man is totally dependent upon Almighty God for all things concerning life and comfort. I'm reminded of Jesus is the vine and I am the branch, without Him, I can do nothing. The Almighty God created us to depend upon him. God is most pleased when we are Christ-centered rather than self-centered. When "self" is crucified and is dead concerning our needs.

There are so many folk who ask the question, "Why did all those men, women and children die in the O.T., and why would a loving God do this"....V.5 answers that question; "because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out". In order that their wicked lifestyle would not find its way into Israel's lifestyle, all had to perish.

The unbelievable patience and long suffering of the Lord our God is displayed in how stubborn and rebellious Israel was during the 40 year wilderness experience and yet our Lord continued to forgive and allow Israel to continue because He can't go back on His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God has painted a clear picture of our Lord Jesus.... through Moses through his intersession for the Israelites ... even to the forty day fast...Over and over we can see victory over sin (giants) . The need to kill all the sin even to the 'white lie' the children...
Thinking on the symbolism in....
Deu 9:29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.

I can see Jesus' out stretched arms on the Cross...

Chapter 9
Young's Literal Translation
Deu 9:5 not for thy righteousness, and for the uprightness of thy heart, art thou going in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations is Jehovah thy God dispossessing them from before thee; and in order to establish the word which Jehovah hath sworn to thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob;
Deu 9:6 and thou hast known, that not for thy righteousness is Jehovah thy God giving to thee this good land to possess it, for a people stiff of neck thou art .

I see that I should not assume that if I or someone is blessed by the Lord in some way, that it is because I or them are deserving of the blessings. It may be because it is purposed in His plan to do this.

Moses reminds them of their rebellion and how he appealed to the Lord in their behalf.

Deu 9:29 and they are Thy people, and Thine inheritance, whom Thou hast brought out by Thy great power, and by Thy stretched-out arm!

Deu 10:8 At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.
Deu 10:9 Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.

1Pe_2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

1Pe 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Deu 10:16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

Rom 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Deu 10:22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

There is that good ol number 40 again :thinking

Thank you.
I should make a correction to my own statement that "tiny boxes attached containing the Torah worn by the Jewish priests. They are still worn today by some."
That it is not the whole Torah but certain verses from the Torah, including Deut. 6:4.

"threescore and ten" is 70.
