We see in 1 Samuel 28. Saul going to a woman with familiar spirit to call the Spirit of dead Prophet Samuel. How can a woman evil spirit call Prophet's Spirit. Can we mean that there was an evil spirit residing in Saul?

I have logic to counter this. We don't see anywhere in old testament, men of God casting out demons. The ministry of deliverance was started by Jesus Christ. So the Spirit of Samuel which came to the woman and Saul was an evil spirit

correction: Can we mean that there was an evil spirit residing in Prophet Samuel? Else how would the woman with evil spirit call the Spirit of Samuel?

Do you believe the woman was surprised when she saw who she had brought up?

Why do you suppose she cried with a loud voice when she saw Samuel?

Yes, she called up a demon. It wasn't Samuel

When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice.

What part of SAW SAMUEL don't you understand???

Maybe you feel you can just interpret what God's word to suit whatever
Doctrine you choose to believe.

The scripture says WHEN THE WOMAN SAW SAMUEL!!!

Please repent from your unholy insinuation that Samuel was a demon.

Great logic but do you have answers for the following verses

10And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.

11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

You mean that the woman had problem when she saw Samuel but she didn't have any problem when Saul promised that her life won't be in danger in verse 10. Who can promise escape from punishment but only the king and she didn't have any reaction when Saul in disguised form promised her she will have no harm to her life.

The woman also asked who shall I bring up and the answer was Samuel and for this she didn't have any contradictory response to the disguised king why he wanted to call Samuel

So how do you understand verse 10 and 11 then?

And also in verse 15, Samuels says to Saul why he distrubed him. If it was the will of God to allow the Spirit of Samuel to be called before Saul by a witch then should have Samuel used the word "disquieted"?

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!" 13 And the king said to her, "Do not be afraid. What did you see?" And the woman said to Saul, "I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth." 14 So he said to her, "What is his form?" And she said, "An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle." And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down. 15 Now Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" And Saul answered, "I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do." 16 Then Samuel said: "Why then do you ask me, seeing the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy? 17 And the Lord has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. 18 Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines." 1 Samuel 28:12-19

Here is what the scriptures teach us in these verse's -

  • the woman saw Samuel
  • Now Samuel said to Saul,
  • Then Samuel said: "Why then do you ask me, seeing the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy?
These scripture clearly teach us that Samuel himself was seen by the woman and was speaking to Saul.

Samuel then recalls the Prophecy into account that he had originally spoken to Saul -

  • And the Lord has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David.

Samuel then proceeds to prophecy again to Saul about the coming battle with the Philistines -

  • Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines.
  • And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me.

The prophecies came to pass, just as Samuel had said.

For someone to assign all these scriptures to some demon, which the scriptures themselves gives no indication of such is Presumption of the highest order.

JLB,

We've been over this passage. The Scriptures say that Saul inquired of a demon.

YLT 1 Chronicles 10:13 And Saul dieth because of his trespass that he trespassed against Jehovah, against the word of Jehovah that he kept not, and also for asking at a familiar spirit -- to inquire, --
The Scriptures say that he inquired of a demon. It seems obvious that the demon appeared to her as Samuel, but according to Scripture it wasn't.

13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. 1 Chronicles 10:13

The woman he consulted with was a medium, that is what it says in the scripture -

7 Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor."

1 Samuel 28:7

The scripture says Saul specifically wanted to inquire of a medium.

The scripture also states why he disguised himself, because he himself had decreed to put to death the mediums from the land. -

9
Then the woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?"

The scriptures goes on to clearly state that it was indeed Samuel who came up from the heart of the earth -

15 Now Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" And Saul answered, "I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do."

Jesus explained to us that Abraham's Bosom was down in the heart of the earth along with hell. Luke 16

The OT saints were kept there until Jesus descended down there when he was crucified.

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:40

This is where Samuel was residing when Saul has consulted with the medium to bring him up.

The medium cried out in surprise when she saw Samuel, and it was at that moment, when she saw Samuel and not a demon that she realized it was Saul who inquired of her.

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!"

Abraham's Bosom was in the heart of the earth where the OT saints were preserved.

Luke 24:4 And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men in gleaming clothing stood near them.

Do you say these were human men?

Or rather, were they angels appearing as men to the women issuing God's message?

1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' " 8 And they remembered His words.9 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Matthew 24:1-9

Since they were, as it seemed, the first one's to the Tomb and went back and told the eleven and the rest, that would mean the "men in shining cloths" who were aware of Jesus word's to them when He was in Galilee and taught them about His resurrection, were angels since it was to the Apostles and disciples that Jesus spoke these words and they were clearly receiving this news from the women.

1Samuel 28:12-20 this women used a familar spirit that took on the form of Samuel as this is why the scripture says Samuel spoke. Look closely at vs. 14, Saul ask what form is he of and the women describe the form and Saul stooped with his face to the ground and bowed himself before the form, not actually seeing it, but only perceving it was Samuel. The familiar spirit only spoke of things that Saul already knew about God being quiet and why He was quiet toward Saul. The familiar spirit never gave Saul an answer of what he should do. Then the familiar spirit proceeded to tell Saul what was about to happen to him and his sons that they would be in the ground from whench the familiar spirit came from.

Saul is now in his grave waiting that of the lake of fire as his name is not written in the Lambs book of life, but will face Gods judgement for being an abomination to God. God rejected Saul for his disobedience against Him.

1Ch 10:13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
1Ch 10:14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

Lev 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Deu 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

Do you actually believe Abraham's Bosom and hell are actually in the earth? Jesus never descended down to the heart of the earth as you put it and Luke 16 is not proof that he did as this was a parable (story example) and not literal.

You disregard what the scripture says and interject what you "presume" in its place.

Do you actually believe Abraham's Bosom and hell are actually in the earth? Jesus never descended down to the heart of the earth as you put it and Luke 16 is not proof that he did as this was a parable (story example) and not literal.

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:40

Jesus descended down into the heart of the earth.

8 Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men." 9 (Now this, "He ascended"--what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) Ephesians 4:8-10

Paradise was also in the heart of the earth, before Jesus led captivity captive.

42 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." 43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." Luke 23:42-43

Jesus described Abraham's Bosom as being in the heart of the earth, where hell was.

22 And it came to pass , that the beggar died , and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died , and was buried ; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said , Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. Luke 16:22-24
The rich man saw Abraham a far off. The rich man was in hell.

Abraham was in Abraham's Bosom in a place of Blessing.

Hell is in the earth, as well as Abraham's bosom which was called Paradise.

Abraham and the Old Testament saints were not in heaven at the time jesus told us this teaching.

Samuel was also down in the heart of the earth in Abraham's Bosom,
when Saul sought his counsel.

Saul did not go to hell, he went to be with Samuel and the rest of the OT saints.

Well, I'm not going to get into Abraham's bosom again but it was not Samuel that came up. The woman said she saw "elohiyms" coming up. "Elohiym" means god. She saw gods coming up.

13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. (1Sa 28:13 KJV)

The Scriptures says that the "gods" are demons. We know from other places in Scripture that angels can take the form of men. It's not hard to imagine that a demon appeared as Samuel.

Let me ask you why would Samuel obey a demon or a medium and come up if that were possible?
Another point, Saul went to the woman because God refused to talk to him. Do you really believe that Samuel would talk to Saul is God wouldn't.

Here's another issue, if this was Samuel wouldn't his prophecy be true?

19 Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. (1Sa 28:19 KJV)

Saul didn't die the next day, it was at least 2 days later before Saul died. We would expect a demon to lie but not Samuel.

Butch 5 said -

and again -

16 Then Samuel said: "Why then do you ask me, seeing the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy?

Samuel said, not a demon, but Samuel said -

You don't just get to presume to change God's word and add and take away from what the scriptures actually say.

It's interesting Butch that even though Samuel rebuked Saul after he disobeyed concerning the Amalekites and said his rebellion was "as the sin of witchcraft" Saul went and consulted a witch. Man how low had he fallen. :(

1Sa 15:23 KJV For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Hi JLB,

It doesn't matter what English word a translators used, the Hebrew text uses "elohiym" so and mistranslation in English doesn't change that. The Septuagint also says "gods".

The passage says that Saul perceived that it was Samuel. Saul didn't see anything the woman did. Saul perceived from what the woman said that it was Samuel, of course that's what Saul wanted to see. The book is a history of the kings of Israel and is recorded from that position so if Saul perceived that he was speaking with Samuel then it's going to be recorded that way.

If you read Gen 19 you'll see that two angels appeared to Lot and they are called men in the Scriptures. Are they men or are they angels, or are the called men because that is how they appeared to the people?
