Charismatic Bible Studies - 1 Peter 3:18-22

If you are a Christian you are fit to be in the army of God because there are many, many positions to fill for instance are you a prayer warrior or a teacher or a minister , do you visit the sick and those unable to care for themselves. You do not have to be on the front lines or in the trenches to be in God's Army.

Thanks for the reply, Hawk.

Now I understand what you are saying here, but read through this first. I had posted it earlier in discussing some things with Randy. The army I am referring to is the one described in the first section of this vision here. I will see if I can't find the additional quotes that said almost none of us are actually fit for what is coming just yet, but now, that's a fairly strong rebuke that not everyone would be ready to receive. It's a "let him who has ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches" kinda thing.

I'll post the initial link and then see if I can add to it, and then come back and address your other responses:

Ok, just added the second part where he specifically talks about the state of the army as it exists today. In a sense you could say we are all a part of it now, but what sort of army is it? Is it the true army of God described in the book of Joel yet, or has that not truly taken shape yet.

I suppose that would be another question to pose for people, but I hadn't posted that material until now. But if I had to answer it myself, I would say no, we are still largely in the condition of the third army. I think some are being prepared to be chosen for the real thing that is coming, and I'm hoping to be one of them, but I don't think the day is here yet. I think it is drawing closer, but the power to heal entire hospitals through the laying on of hands, or other things the army is prophesied to do... I just don't think it has been formed yet. I think that is part of our job on forums like this is to help train people to potentially become soldiers in that greater army when the time comes.

Anyway, added a second passage just now:

Be a happy warrior in God's army , people seeing your example is what will get the people of the world to want to be enlisted.

I love this answer. I was thinking about this just this evening as a matter of fact. Spiritual attacks may bring us down, but they don't keep us down forever, and it's important lesson in the spiritual war. When the Spirit is in manifestation, the fruit will be Love, Power and a Sound Mind. :thumbsup2 This is why the command in scripture was to think on what was positive, and of a good report, and not to let the things the enemy might be doing cause us to grieve or turn to bitterness. In the end, we win, LoL, and there's nothing the enemy can do about it : )

I prayed a prayer to be enjoined to the battle and that is where I am now. The greater measure of the Holy Spirit poured upon me has been beyond anything I would have imagined, God has blessed me so much.

Glorious! I believe that concerning you. I have a strengthening that is coming as well. One can never be satisfied in the things of God, for as the scripture says, we increase from glory to glory.

I liked your answers, and thank you very much for sharing. :thumbsup

Well, you're right to ask because it's arguable and more like speculation on my part. Sadly, it's my style to act like I speak with authority even when I'm guessing! ;)

So there are several reasons--some just pure logic.

1) God is unlikely to fail to win at least half of what He created for His glory. So at a minimum I would guess God will save at least half of mankind, or perhaps just 1/3 of humanity, if He is replacing the 1/3 of angels he lost to Satan. No promises!

Matt 25.31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Gen 1.28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.

Isa 55.11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

2) Israel was kept even when a very small minority was faithful to God. For example, Elijah thought he and only about 7000 men were faithful to God in his time. 1 Kings 19.18. However, instead of just saving 7000 men God continued to reach out to the whole nation.

Rom 11.25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way all Israel will be saved.

That means not that every Jew or citizen of Israel will be saved, but that the political salvation of Israel will present a whole nation filled with saved individuals, even if not all of them will be saved.

3) There are numerous examples in the Scriptures of God using a believer even after they had walked away, so to speak. Moses, Samson, Peter--all Christians have issues at times. If they can return, then many can be forgiven and at least given a 2nd chance, though they may continue to be as weak as when God initially forgave them. If He forgave them once He will forgive them again. If He ignored their failiure the 1st time, He will ignore their failure the 2nd time.

4) Paul said that Christians can produce different kinds of works, some that are to be destroyed, and some that will resound to God's glory.

1 Corinthians 3:12-13 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.

1 John 2.28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

This could mean that some Christians will go to heaven with an immediate sense of shame, though they will be forgiven for their failures. It's debatable.

Ultimately, my purpose in even suggesting this is to display my sense of God's grace, that He never tires in forgiving--70 x 7. And personally, I've known friends who could not overcome their sins and yet believed in God and called upon Him for mercy.

I had an alcoholic friend who had accepted Christ and occasionally tried to beat his habit. But he failed, gave up and probably died drunk and asleep in a house fire while he was on fire watch.

I had another friend who had terrible back pain and died apparently hanging himself on Halloween, whether by accident as a prank or by suicide. The guy managed our sound system for our church and was a good guy, and I believe he will be in heaven.

I believe we will all die with some stains on our record, and some stains will be terrible for some. But God's grace covers all sin when we call upon Him sincerely. And I believe God will save all who cast their trust in Him and believe in His word.

That's what I believe, and I'm sticking with it... :)
Thank you for sharing Randy :) i appreciate your outlook, and im very sorry to hear about your friends.

The Few And The Proud: Those Who Are Not Just Called But Chosen

View attachment 17320

The Few, The Proud is a long standing motto of the US Marines, the toughest arm of the United States military, and I believe their standards run a strong parallel with those who will be chosen as soldiers in the end-time army of God. Not everyone will make it as has been prophesied. The question is, who will and who will not.

The apostle Peter will now point out how only a relative few were being saved in his time compared to the vast majority, because not many were able to endure the persecution that came along with preaching the gospel. He would therefore make the comparison to those who were saved during Noah's time, before God's judgment finally came upon the world.

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

When Peter talked about Christ preaching to the spirits in prison, he was talking about what traditional Christianity refers to as the Harrowing Of Hell. After the crucifixion, Christ Jesus descended into the Paradise side of the Underworld and preached to them that He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world for their sins, as foreshadowed in the Passover Lamb. After HIs preaching, they understood He was the promised Messiah, sent to lead them out of the Underworld and into Heaven, for the price had now been paid for them to enter into the very Presence of the Father. When He resurrected, scripture says that some of these saints who had died also resurrected with Him, and were seen walking the streets of Jerusalem after He rose from the dead:

The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. (Matt. 27:52–53)

But Peter was not referring to all of the Old Testament saints here. He was referring specifically to Noah and his family, and for a specific reason. He wanted to draw a parallel between how there were only a few in that day who trusted in God, and who were warning that a terrible judgment was coming, just like the New Testament saints were now doing. Peter would make this comparison again in his second letter:

1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets... 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget... the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 And the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.... 10 The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. (2 Peter 3:1-7, 10)

Like Noah and his family, the New Testament saints were "heralds of righteousness." Like Noah, they warned of a terrible judgement that was coming, and suffering ridicule as a result. And like Noah and his family, they were relatively few in number compared to the vast majority who did not believe.

A Culling Is Now Underway

Why, then, were the New Testament saints relatively few in number compared to the masses? Scripture suggests it is because it is a difficult road. One will increasingly be brought under discipline by the Lord, much like elite soldiers whose discipline must be of a higher order. And it is a road that must be chosen of one's own freewill, which most do not wish to take it.

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Lest anyone think our God is not searching for spiritual soldiers, it should not be overlooked that the first Gentile He choose to have the Spirit poured out upon was a Roman centurion and his family, and very likely not just because they were devout but because He knew they would fight for what they believe, and die for it if necessary.

1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” 4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. (Acts 10:1-4)

The Romans might not have respected other Gentiles having had some strange religious experience, but they would have no choice but to respect a military commander in their army. The building of God's army amongst the Gentiles began with Him choosing a Roman centurion; a trained leader of 80 men.

44 And while Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out upon the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” (Acts 10:44-47)

So who is God choosing today? It appears the Lord is again in the selection process, in preparation for the great outpouring spoken of by the prophet Joel. This was prophesied very clearly beginning about four decades ago, when Harold Pittman - a former Baptist minister - was taken into 2nd Heaven, and had a number of things revealed to him by the Spirit of God.

God is now in the process of recruiting an army with which He will shake this world one more time. By working through His soldiers, God will produce great miracles that will shake the established hierarchy of so-called organized religion in the world today. These soldiers that God is now recruiting will demonstrate the power of God to a greater extent than did the disciples in the Pentecostal age. Some will be even greater demonstrations than that of Elijah... To the new recruit, I would say study the Bible diligently and seek the Lord's will in every aspect of your life. Time is short for your spiritual training, but you will be used in ways you never thought possible if you seek the Lord first in your life. You who are being chosen will be the soldiers of the latter rain as referred to in scripture. This recruitment is for the end of the great revival spoken of by the prophet Joel, which began on the day of Pentecost. The end-time of that great revival is the beginning of the latter rain, so you must prepare for the battle with the discipline of a professional soldier. Know this also: There shall be a time or process of "culling" those who are not qualified to be a member of this "Gideon's" army. Just as with Gideon's army in the Bible, only a select few will be fit for service in the army of Christian soldiers the Lord will use in the battle of the latter rain. (Pittman, Placebo, P.42-43)

As was also revealed, this army will also be characterized by holiness. Those whom He selects will lead holy lives, yet they will be people the world and even the church have overlooked.

"Behold, I am preparing a holy army. They will do mighty exploits for me and destroy your high places. They are an army of holy men and women, boys and girls. They have been anointed to preach the true gospel, to lay hands on the sick and to call the sinner to repentance. "This is an army of working men, housewives, single men, single women and schoolchildren. They are common people, for not many noble have responded to My call. In the past they have been misunderstood and mistreated, abused and rejected. But I have blessed them with boldness in holiness and in spirit. They will begin to fulfill My prophecy, and to do My will. I will walk in them, talk in them I and work in them...

I think some will be chosen and some not because it is a narrow way, and not easy. You have become obedient to what God tells you. So many Christians today are in church only because they are bored, or they want to be social. But they are not there to go to the hard places.

Yes. It is because they are not ready to take orders. It is not fun being ordered to forgive 70 times, or seventy times seven. It is not fun enduring physical or emotional affliction for Christ in being faithful to one's calling. But there is a responsibility involved. You are no longer doing what you want to do. You are doing it because you are under orders to, and as a soldier you know to fulfill a command.

This is why I again always come back to the spiritual gifts. How can you know His specific will for your life of you are not operating in the prophetic? You're just flotsam drifting about with no specific directives from God. Cornelius was a soldier... and there was another Roman centurion who came to Christ who understood this principle as well. Let me see if I can find it...

5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” 7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment. (Matthew 8:5-13)

In other words, the Roman centurion understood the principle of line of authority. And Christ commended him for it. It appears again as if the Lord was pleased with someone who understood that when orders are given by someone in authority they are to and will be obeyed. It pleases Him to hear such talk. But how many believers today are willing to enter into such a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ? It's not just about going to church, it's about submitting to His authority in our day to day lives.

And notice too, the Lord did not wait for Peter's approval to baptize Cornelius and his family in the Holy Spirit. He didn't wait for anyone's approval. He simply did it whether the church liked it or not. We have to be open to what the Spirit of God says at all times, and obey His leading. How many are willing to buck with what is traditionally accepted, or the fashionable thing to do in church, or socially acceptable? Again this goes back to the gifts. How many will declare they operate in them and do what He says do even when they are ostracized for it?

I think it's what the Lord told Pittman, "Learn to seek the Lord's will in everything you do." For a solder of Christ, it is not about His general will, it becomes increasingly about His specific will.

What was Gideons army that the quote referred to?

The story is from the Book of Judges:

1 Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley. 2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his [a]place.” 8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

9 It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, 11 and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 Now the Midianites and Amalekites, all the people of the East, were lying in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.

13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.” 14 Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”

15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.” 16 Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do: 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, ‘The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!’ ”

19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” 21 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. (Judges 7:1-22).

________________________________

The implication in citing this story was this: Lapping with the tongue like a dog and getting down on the knees are both acts that require a certain humility, and those who did these things were demonstrating that they were not only humble but sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. These are the ones He will choose as His soldiers. As the scripture says, "It is not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord," so He selected out three hundred men to defeat an army of thousands because they were those who would OBEY His leading, even if what they would be asked to do would seem illogical and they would be vastly outnumbered.

In answer to your questions

1. I think almost none are ready now, at least not in this country. I can tell you because I have seen it for many years. Most Christians in America do not know what true suffering is. When I was a girl, I saw a woman throw out a pot of beans from above down into the street, and when they do that it means the beans are bad. And then I saw a little boy come running and put his face in it and started eating. And my father said to us, “That is why you should always be grateful for the things you have.”

I think Christians in other countries may be more ready to endure suffering than here. Here people talk about being “poor,” but there they are poor, poor, poor. Christians have things too easy here.

2. Teach more about fasting, command, obedience.

3. I don’t think I would be chosen. As I grow maybe.

So at a minimum I would guess God will save at least half of mankind, or perhaps just 1/3 of humanity, if He is replacing the 1/3 of angels he lost to Satan.

Beautiful insight.

If we aren't suffering we probably aren't living for the Lord in any meaningful way. The minute we begin to obey God's verbal inclinations to our heart, to live in His righteousness and to testify to truth, opposition begins, and suffering follows.

If people are only interested in the material side of life, avoiding spiritual conflicts, they may think they've discovered "Eden." But they haven't. They just have hold of a temporary peace, because the conflict is always there. If we're not fighting for righteousness, wickedness will take over.

Thanks.
