Churches must pay taxes

billy graham?come on. he isn't a money hoarder. he doesn't teach the prosperity gospel. I have listened to him to know that.

Billy Graham is a very wealthy man and so is his son Graham. His personal net worth is estimated to be around 25 million.

I knew that he had money but he isn't known to be prospertity gospel type. its not sin to be rich. I haven't heard of graham robbing and deceiving men for their money.

Should the ministry pay taxes on those items?
they do if they aren't using them for charity. a church must yearly file its tax exemption status with each business the deal with. gas taxes I don't know if they are exempt nor if they are exempt from franchise fees for water and sewer usage and also electric and cable. dang if I was asked this just last Thursday I could have said something about one church. the taxes are in the machines for billing. they are viewable.(what status)

Sometimes the ministry owns the homes, the jets.. etc...

That's true. I know with things such as jets, if the jet is used say for a personal use it's supposed to be recorded and a dollar value for that reported to the IRS.
But that makes me wonder about a home (parsonage) whether that would be reported as part of the pastor's income or could be determined and reported as a barter for a portion of his services? Or doesn't need to be reported at all?

Property taxes? Hmm...Corporations do but then it is an expense on their income tax return, so they don't usually end up paying income taxes on that money.

Neither have I.

I own a home, I can deduct, ad valorem, and insurance for the loan and homeowner insurance.

private jets? list that church?
Kenneth Copeland.
But his church owns the jets, and he supposedly leases them from the church (with the money they pay him).
So he pays no tax on them or anything else for that matter.

If you use your salary to go lease a car, do you pay the taxes on the leased car?
You pay taxes on your salary that is paid to you, so does he. He has to pay personal income taxes.

Some of these preachers that have been mentioned do not take a salary from their ministries any longer, they don't need to. Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Joseph Prince, I know do not.

The ministry owns two jets, both exempt from property taxes. Kenneth and Gloria Copeland's lakeside villa — valued at $6.3 million — is also tax-exempt because it's listed as a parsonage.

So that means the little church on the corner that provides a parsonage for their pastor who makes $30,000 a year doesn't have to pay taxes on it and neither does he.

What do you think the answer is to this issue?

Kathi
Personally I don't think they need a jet.
But then I don't think corporations need yachts and penthouses either but they have them and write them off as business expenses.

Kenneth Copeland Ministries has the same tax exemption as the little church on the corner.
It's all legal but is it morally right?

Personally this is what I would purpose. That ALL churches and ministeries, without exception, have to provide a yearly financial report to a certified charity watch in order to maintain their tax exempt status and that the report be available to the public.
Right now both John McArthur and Andrew Wommack do this. Although John does not allow full access to records as Andrew does.
Other charities have to give reports to the IRS yearly.
