The cost of living and the comfortable mean standards for life in America is high. So high that many labor intensive jobs are cheaper outside of America than inside.
Americans won't work for the same wages China's workforce will.
Then comes the EPA guidelines. We don't want the toxic sludge here that manufacturers create. China's air is so polluted that often you can't see the other side of the street in the big cities.
Many of the exhaustable resources that China produces are depleting...and they don't care but we do...and we are hanging on to those reserves for exploiting later. (Rare earth elements, and etc)
Renewable resources like wood products, forestry products, foodstuffs, intellectual property, and etc have been a focus here for a long time. Not changing a program that works.
No one is going to pay $200 for cheap sneakers and other small use items like spatulas and coffee cups...so China makes them. They buy plastics from Canada, automation equipment from America, petroleum from Russia and steel from Japan and make things.
