Could you do this?

Smart man. BEHIND YOUR BACK...... always!

And Gary is more than right. It really requires very little strength of any kind.
I'm eager to try this now. I could just tie off a rope at the top of the building and go for it then?

I might suggest low (very low) buildings at first. You will find yourself spinning and missing your footing for awhile. You'll bang your back and shoulders against the wall some.

You don't need a lot of upper body strength to rappel. It was easy. The way the harness and ropes works together it's very easy to stop your descent, just tighten your hand on the rope and it brakes you and you stop. What you cant do, is to forget where to hold the rope and reflexively reach up for the rope because then you would be hanging by arm power instead of the harness. Which is essentially like a pair of shorts made out of webbing and d rings.

One other guy went with us rappelling and he forgot what he was doing and reached up! He caught himself but hung there for a minute or so until he gathered his wits enough to reach down and grab the rope.. I'm glad he didn't fall. So it can be dangerous, but I had a lot of fun doing it and would go again in a heartbeat. The hardest thing about it was carrying 300 ft of rope up the mountain, lol.

:lol

Did I ever tell you I have no fear of death?

Does a person even need a building? What about rappelling off a bridge?
It's really a lot more fun springing out away from a cliff, and coming back into it to bounce out again... and again... and again....

I only went the one time, but I've seem 'em do it on tv a bunch of times. I did do my share of spinning (lol) and realized that it's good to keep moving and keep momentum. Keep kicking off of that wall (or mountain in our case). It takes a rhythm.

Small buildings would be better at first until one gets used to stopping and starting quickly. Since you can't free fall you have to make a bunch of hops, lol. Just to slow yourself down.

One of my first rappels out of a Huey, my big feet swung up and dented the bottom side of the ship. The PIC (a Warrant) wanted to kick my ______.

Never tried it forward.... on purpose, that is.

You gotta have a good sense of balance because you're top heavy and can flip end over end really easy. Seen a guy do an upside down face plant on the side of a mountain.
