I think it is important to keep in mind that Jesus was also a priest, but not born of Levi. Hebrews tells us that He was from the tribe of Judah.
Hebrews 7:11-19
11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.
14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchizedek there ariseth another priest,
16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.
19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
Matthew tells us Jesus' lineage through Joseph moving forward from Abraham to Joseph. Matthew 1:1-17 Adoption is valid before God, and the legal system. It is the very basis of salvation because the Word uses it as a valid way of identifying God's family.
Luke moves backward from Christ to Adam, the son of God. Luke 3:23-38 Luke omitted Mary, and all other women, but used her family line to establish physical lineage. It is very different than Matthews for that reason. There is no mistake in this.
Luke substituted Heli's son as Joseph...he had no sons out side of inlaws. The same sort of substitution was made by Moses in Numbers 27:1-11 and Numbers 36:1-12 It is not unprecedented.
The Lord bless all of you.
