Distractions during sermon

I deleted the denomination in my post.
That’s good Kathi you deleted the link to divisions among the body of Christ. Next thing you know there would have been those claiming to be AOG, Baptists, Catholics, Methodist, and whatever. In Christ we are one. :)

1 Cor 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
1 Cor 3:4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

Evil spirits perhaps? You have to set your heart upon learning and rebuke that distraction. Has the same thing ever happened when you sat down to read the bible? Oh now I'm hungry, my phones ringing, anything to get your mind off of learning some wisdom.

You mean, all the stuff I do when I should be studying for exams is actually the work of evil spirits? It's not my own fault? Wow, thanks Edward you are such a relief! :biggrin2

WOW we have a junior high forum :hysterical

Perhaps. but then again, maybe that's what happens when one pours new wine into an old wineskin? The people will perish for a lack of knowledge. With the new knowledge, there can be renewing taking place and real progression. Progression into normality. :)

Yes, I think you're correct. BUT! As a Christian, I think we have a duty to recognize this and to rebuke it, to set the heart upon learning and overcome the distraction...and grow.

I think you typo'd. I fixed it in my quote of yours because that is what I believe you intended to say. :)

Maybe some are being kind of cheated:
3. Keyboardist - you are playing background music
Lol that's a poor excuse. They don't play *during* the sermon.

4. Ushers - receiving people
Same.

8. Body odour from someone
Awkward, but true.

13. Goooooooooooal ;-) ;)
Play this during the sermon and shout "Bingo!!!!" when you complete a line.

Yeah you fixed that correctly. You're a good conversation partner, you understand what I mean even if I say the opposite. ;-)

Some preachers may not like the keyboard background - some others do.

Ushers? They don't quit

Thank you for the kind words sister. It's really just basic comprehension though, an increasingly more rare trait amongst people it seems, lol!

Seriously? There are preachers that preach with music in their background? I would feel so manipulated.

I was listening to one pastor on youtube who actually stopped for a moment, and asked for a keyboardist to come up and play softly behind him. She was in tune with him though and it did not distract from the message. I thought it was kind of cool actually.

Some of the audio bibles have sound effects while it's being read. Eh...that wasn't done correctly I thought. Made it like into a movie or something. Ugh, I changed audio bibles.

Yeah it's like a movie sound track. In movies music is used to arouse certain emotions that the director wants the audience to feel. For entertainment that's fine. For audio Bibles it's off. And in church it would be like using music to cause an emotional reaction in the congregation, bypassing their rational brain and and using their "lower" cognitive functions instead. That's manipulation.

Slightly hard of hearing i could do with out any back ground music while people are talking..

I've seen this done before and it can be nice, it can be manipulative, and it can be distracting, not to even mention the valid point that those who are hard of hearing will have a hard time understanding the sermon. The musician doing the playing needs to be very good to be able to do this well and not just be a distraction. Many aren't this good and it turns into a disaster. Also, even if you have the right musician and the right speaker to make this work, there is still a time and place for it, and I don't think that time and place is at every Sunday sermon. But then, that's just my personal preference.

As for playing on people's emotions, yes, this is true. But I don't think it's wrong if it's done for the right reasons. Afterall, the hymns/songs that were sung are all designed for the same purpose. The background music before or after the service is designed for the same purpose. Even the sermon itself is worded to play on emotions and the pastor (if he is a good speaker and doesn't want to lose his audience) will use his non-verbal communication (body language, tone of voice, etc) to his fullest ability in order to get his point across and keep people's attention (which necessarily involves playing on their emotions). Even Jesus did this in the word pictures he drew (parables) etc. This isn't always a bad thing, it just has to be used for the right purpose.

I think it is tacky.
