I can say something about this subject now that I couldn't have said back in 2005.
In 2008, my father died of cancer of the esophagus. He was almost 75 years of age. He smoked cigarettes until the day before he died. He was a Christian and a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, which really doesn't take stands on things like smoking or drinking.
I truly believed that he got the cancer from the cigarettes.
Then I met up with a dear old friend of mine whose father was instrumental in me becoming a Christian. He was a devout Assembly of God man most all his life, never drank, never smoked, ate a healthy diet. He died in 1999, of cancer of the esophagus. Same kind that killed my father. He was 9 years younger than my dad when he died, because they were the same age.
Turns out both Mr. Smith and Dad had hiatal hernias which contributed to chronic acid reflux, which increases the risk of esophageal cancer by a lot. I happen to have a hiatal hernia as well and get acid reflux quite often too, so I might wind up with the same cancer.
It would be easy to quickly judge Dad as being selfish or not taking care of his "temple" due to the smoking, but the smoking never caused him any particular health issues. As a matter of fact, he was one of the healthiest men I've ever known, up until the cancer.
It is rude for smokers not to be considerate of others. But, is smoking a cause for hatred?
Nope!!!!
