Dr. Laura

This topic might be a little outdated, because she's really on the down side of her broadcast career as far as I can tell. I know she was brought down in a scandal when she uttered the "n" word. I didn't hear too much about it, but I think she was referencing how some people are allowed to use it and others aren't. Not the purpose of this thread, though.

Does anyone else ever, or have you ever, listened to her show? While I don't favor the brash tone that she speaks to callers with, I have to say I believe she is pretty spot on when she gives advice. Callers who call her and come right out and admit that they're living with someone who they're not married have got to know how she's going to respond, don't they? They'll get a sharp "You shouldn't be shacking up." speech from her. Although she's Jewish, she's quite respectful of the Christian faith, and I've even heard her interviewed by Dr. Dobson on "Focus on the Family".

So, I'm wondering how others who have heard her show feel about her. There was a time when she had a convenient spot on our local station when I listened to her more. I heard her at an odd hour on a drive home late last night, and it prompted me to post this thread.

I think it is a real loss to right thinking people who listen to radio. One more hits the dust, yet makes way for MORE trash-talking people in that medium! I don't get it!

Why should she, who had a strong moral voice, hang up her hat when disgusting people like Howrd Stern and the like continue to proliferate and prosper?

I'm glad I'm not the only one to hang myself out there for a beating from the board! :lol

Although I hate this genre of radio, which is there for people to listen to other people air their wretched laundry, I do feel she gives very practical solutions to callers who aught to be ashamed for the reason they call. People love to witness (in this case, listen to) freak shows. This voyeur mentality where people listen or watch shows to hear how bad other people have mangled their lives is really a blot on society.

Sorry, I have two thoughts intertwining through one post. :gah Some of her stances which I agree with, that is difficult to hear are:

  • abortion is always wrong
  • mothers of young children should be home with them (scale down and make it work)
  • put dating aside if you're a single parent until your kids are out of their teens
  • don't live with someone outside of the covenant of marriage
  • abstinence outside of marriage is the only correct decision
  • don't play the victim, take responsibility for your circumstances
Others are not coming to mind. Alabaster, you're spot on with regard to all the other shock-jocks that are there to always push the line of decency. Radio has become a cesspool of immorality. Stern is just one of many. :bigfrown

I truly do not remember the last time I have even listened to the radio, even in the car. But whenever I have listened to Dr. Laura, it has always been on a TV show where she has guested.

She obviously has a high moral stance, and it is a shame she has been beset upon for her gaffe. Her high moral standards have most likely fuelled her decision. People who are ugly and unforgiving could have seriously pressured her.

She is most likely not a believer ( I pray she is or will be!), but even people who have such strong convictions like hers which are in agreement with biblical morality, they will find themselves at odds with secularism, bigtime.

Dr Laura was at one time, a flaming liberal. Back then she would tell a woman that it was just fine to get pregnant out of wed-lock and raise a child fatherless. Years later she has some sort of epiphany and turns 180. She embraces her conservative side; her sense of morality emerges.

I don't know what to think of her. Her advice was morally OK in the end, but it's her stubborn, as you said Mike, "Brashness" that put her in the situation she's in. Obviously she was prepared to do that, and so on the one hand I could say I admire her for it. However, if she had any intentions of staying on the radio, she would have.

I can't help but think that if she were a man, it would have been different...

Dr. Laura was always a bit harsh for my tastes. I guess someone doesn't get ratings by being moral AND kind, though; as much as we may hate the PC aspect of the media for ending her career, the "meaner and louder, the better" aspect of modern day media helped propel her to stardom.

At least she's not Dr.Phil--self-serving psychobabble disguised as "straight talk." I can't handle all that.

I also wonder what would've happened if she'd been male. Remember her nudie pix scandal, when an ex-flame sold pics he took of her while they were dating? It was a big deal for like 5 minutes. Anyway, if she'd been male--big deal, whatever, so he got around back in the day. But a woman--whoa, now, that was a scandal.

Didn't Don Imus end up getting his radio show back after a racist rant? he bothers me more than Dr. Laura ever did.

He did get his show back but is now affiliated with a different network.

If you all like Dr. Laura, you will most certainly really like Janet Parshall. She will not hesitate when it comes to trowing some scripture out there. :yes
