Food Stamp Slam

in florida, if one cant buy something on tanf and no manager could change that as the card and register wont allow it. its preset into the card what it will pay for as it like my flex pay coded by the register to pay for what they allow.

i have used a tanf card before.

So...just out of curiosity...what wouldn't be covered? I mean, if you go shopping on a food stamps card, how do you even know what's covered?

I don't understand how food stamps work myself. I do think the manager's behavior seems inappropriate. If nothing else, he should be given some sort of punishment and training in how to handle these situations. With so many people out of work or underemployed, he's going to be dealing with lots of food stamp customers. I think he should be better trained in how to handle these situations with a degree of sensitivity and compassion. Maybe he should give her a hand written apology.

Some people are just impossible to deal with. That includes this woman. There's no point in additional training. The cashier could have been a professional psychologist and this woman would still have caused a scene. And, the manager could have been nothing but polite and the woman would still have accused him of being rude.

beer, cigareetes, and other like things. limited amount of milk.

Actually, milk isn't limited. My wife and I were on food stamps and trying to get back on because I am out-of-work again. The only limitations that I know of is any kind of drinkable alcohol, cigarettes, dry goods such as TP, and hot meals already prepared.

At least that's what we know we were limited to.

And that in accordance to state regulations which can vary state to state. Way back when when they were actually "food stamps", I was denied a pop, but other pop like drinks you could buy.

My Mom has been on food stamps since the 70's and I can't tell you how many times I've had to take her shopping. Even she didn't give the person at the register much guff when they told her she couldn't purchase something on the food stamps... and she suffers from schizophrenia.

What he said did nothing to resolve the issue, but rather, it afforded national attention in a negative manner. I'd presume that this manager did not follow corporate policy or procedure with this gal.

What SHE SAID he said...

I don't believe he said what she said he said. Angry customers are for more likely to not be accurate in how they claim they were treated than for professional managers to treat them the way they claim. And, she is a total jerk.

You can look at customer complaint websites and read endless testimony about people claiming to have been treated rudely in addition to not getting what they wanted. You'll practically never see anything like "The manager was polite, but wouldn't [let me buy beer with food stamps]."

If the woman were in the right, the article would have identified what it was she was trying to buy with food stamps. So, we know she was in the wrong from the very start. But, even if she were in the right, she should respect the store's refusal to sell something they believe isn't covered by food stamps.

She was demanding that they break the law. The motto "the customer is always right" doesn't apply to breaking the law.

I forgot to include in my post that I live in Florida. That is why I posted a reply.

I was essentially replying to the poster that said milk was limited.

I agree that the manager could have handled it better, rather than attack her character.

how long ago? my step family in this pic use it and they could only get one gallon of milk per two weeks. hardly what i call enough for a twelve yeard old and baby and mother.

I have seen food stamps sold for cash and store that allow all types of abuse to the program. When folks want to they can sell the stamps for drugs...
Tracy would get a shopping list from Lewis get what was on his list exchange the food for drugs in the parking lot...she would trade then to my daughter for drugs..

"Sure ok i pick that up for you with my food stamps you get the beer....."

The government commodities are also sold

All the systems put in place to help those in need, can and most likely are abused.

It is such a shame that our society is so very lacking in morals. It hurts those who truly need and disserve help.

I agree that its a shame that these systems are being abused, but if you think about it. Food stamps are just another form of currency. So Seeing people trade them as a currency makes sense. Its horrible, but I think it just shows that the person probably isn't the bright tools in the shed if they trade their food money for drugs and beer. :eeeekkk
