Before the flood there are two lines descending from Adam. From Seth a line of descendants adhering to a monogamous form of marriage. The other line have separated from Adam and are the descendants of Cain.
Cain's descendant Lamech was the first to take two wives.
These two lines are refered to as ' the son's of God' and ' the daughters of men'. The first are families of one man and one woman. The latter are families of one man and and as many women he chose.
Adam is the only man who experienced being the image of God. He is understood to be the closest to to God anyone could be. So, to know Adam was to know God and no one was greater than him. Adam's descendants are known as the sons of God.
The biblical description of the Nephilim describes Lamech and he is the first. A polygamous culture divides men and creates a competitive environment of violence among men. Larger stronger males are favored genetically since smaller weaker males aren't able to have wives. The largest and strongest men had the most offspring and became famous in legend and were memorialized in myth.
This is a culture known as 'daughters of men' because women were the most valuable commodity. Woman sought to be more seductive than other women and men sought to be more physically powerful than other men.
The descendants of Cain adapted to a life style conformed to breeding success. Just like the other animals. Male success is in breeding with as many females as possible, female success is in seeking out the most powerful male and remaining with him. That is unless another more powerful male happens to like her enough to take her.
Since monogamy and polygamy were defining characteristic of the two cultures on earth at that time, that is how they are described in Genesis 6. The sons of God being the monogamous line descending from Seth and the daughters of men descending from Cain.
