Has Christianity always been controversial, even among Christians?

:wave2 Hi HalleluYAH and welcome to CF :)

The only controversy among Christians is how and what they believe by the way they are taught, but at least we all agree in that of Christ birth, death and resurrection.

I read (yes, again!) some CS Lewis on that. We all want to fit Jesus in a box. Because of how I was raised, I think "Jesus the progressive, semi-socialist rebel!," and I focus on His love for the poor and the oppressed. Until recently, I'd forget about Paul's writings, for instance, on proper Christian marriage, sexual morality, and rules governing the church body.

Christianity is inherently counter-cultural! In the world, even in the baby steps of Christianity, nobody really accepts everything! For instance, I can accept that Christ died on a cross for mankind's redemption, but I can accept that lots of people aren't going to destined for glory, from day 1? How easy is it to accept that real Christians *will* experience persecution? That's a tough one, especially when you're on the receiving end of persecution from powerful people (happens in the US...but much, much better here than in other countries) ?

I'm rambling, but you get the picture. You can't fit Christ into a box. He wasn't a politician, He wasn't here to establish an earthly Kingdom, so on and so forth. "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."Like another post wrote; 1 Corinthians (the one I quoted is 1:18).

And it all began in the garden.. with "Yea, hath God said"

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

I agree, Clark.

And, why people often can not get pass their differences?
I agree this is true but I think an even bigger problem is that people can't let go of their own pride and just follow the One that created us. We are so intent on doing things our own way and having our own way that we are unable to surrender to Him. We need to explain things for ourselves, understand things ourselves, and do things ourselves so we can say "We did it!" The truth is God did it!

Jesus prayed in the garden for his followers to be one just as he is one with the father (John 17:20-21 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.")
Referring to the current theme of this thread: is denominationalism inherently detrimental? Is there a way that we can have unity despite the different ways to worship?

:wave2Hi DavidJGreen and welcome to CF.

Our unity needs to be that of loving one another as we all come together in agreement of Christ birth, death and resurrection, but that is where it ends for many people. When mans doctrines of traditional teachings are being taught there will always be division in the understanding of truth. This is why we need to read and study for ourselves to be able to discern that of what is being taught us to be truth or error as only the Holy Spirit can discern that for us. We are not infallible, but the word of God is.

Thank you for your welcome. If a lot of our understanding of the scripture comes down to personal study isn't that dangerous to unity? So much to learn (:

No, not really as if we do not read and study for ourselves by allowing the Holy Spirit teach us then we can allow ourselves to fall to the false teachings that are out there. What others teach me I confirm their teachings by studying the scriptures they use to know for a surety of what they teach comes by the Holy Spirit teaching them first as confirmation is made for that of truth or error. Our unity is that of Christ Jesus and our love for him and for each other as at times unity of knowledge and truth is not always there.

Would you know what's needed for avoiding denominationalism?
Make sure what a church system, pastor, and so on tells you aligns with Scripture. For example, one church will tell you that rapture is true, while another will say it’s not. What does the Word say?

Also, keep in mind that your bible is either a translation from the manuscripts or a translation from a translation. Therefore, you often need to take it back to the original language. For example, “fear” can be either translated “fear” or “revere”. If you love and obey God, you have nothing to fear from Him.

Which verse below makes more sense to you:

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7 The reverence of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

If so, why? After all, there is only one God, one Word, and one Holy Spirit.

Since Creation satan has been trying to deceive humans and rob them of relationship with Yahweh and since the Church first formed satan has been there to influence it from within and without.

2Co_11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

It's very difficult for Christians to identify, and reveal, false teachers/prophets because we have so many differing doctrines we're afraid of wrongly accusing someone. satan is behind this of course he's a tricky critter.

I have no idea. Supose thats why there are different theorys on it. Scripture shows a picture that it could be, but also could not be. I cannot find a clear answer. I have always been neutral and dont like to mislead or be mislead.
The Word does tell you; however, because both sides are so entrenched, it usually leads to heated arguments, so I'll leave it alone.

With all the signs and prophecies coming to past. Who's real and who's not? Has anyone seen the testimonies of this so-called prophet of Facebook-- "Prophet Levar Samuel". He has this fan page full of testimonies. Do you guys think those people made up these things? I'm searching for truth and I would like to know if any of you believe in actual prophecy anymore.
