How should biblical creationists view this intriguing story of the “return of the dire wolf” that has been all over headlines and social media?

This is not an honest representation of what happened. They didn't use genes from dire wolves. They basically altered 14 genes in a grey wolf genome. It is possible that someone might someday get enough dire wolf DNA to bring dire wolves back from extinction, but this isn't it.

Somewhat more realistic is the backbreeding of descendants to produce aurochs (wild cattle). Later, scientists were able to get enough auroch DNA to sequence the auroch genome and determine which auroch genes still exist in modern cattle. From that, a true auroch could be eventually produced.
