Heavy Metal myths

Hello,

In other Word's the Holy Spirit can move wherever, whenever and through what ever means and cause it to prosper!

that´s true, he can work despite christian rock, but that is no whitewashing of it.

Is metal music violent - It sure is

The message of rock music is violence and destruction and therefore ungodly.

Example:
When you scream like a maniac at your wife: "I love you", do you think she feels loved?
No, because the tone of your voice is contradicting the words.
Same with christian rock, the music says violence, rebellion but the lyrics say some christian words.

Yo, of course. Have you noticed how many modern christian songs aren't really worshipping God any more, but worshipping our spiritual experiences instead? The focus of the songs has shifted from seeking the Lord and praising him to seeking and praising spiritual sensation. Those songs put ourselves first.
@Claudya :

Good point! We need to concentrate on Him, 'that in all things He might have the preeminence' (Colossians 1.18).

Greetings to you in the love of Jesus

Should we put God in a box? The power of music is universal, I was saved at a Christian rock concert, does this make me less efficient because I was not sitting in a pulpit during an alter call?

If it was not for Christian Rock music I may have never met the Lord, I was living in the era when Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and so many others were just coming on the scene. My first concert was Megadeth/Dio for the Peace Sells LP. So I grew up on metal music. But it was not until I went to a Christian concert where I was touched by the Holy Spirit.

If you do not like metal music, this is your opinion and your opinion matters, but do not tell others to avoid this music because of your opinion and your own bias of it. This music can reach and impact young kids and adults today that other music can not. I wouldn't expect a gang-banger who listens to Rap music only, to show up at a metal concert and give his life to Christ. But the same individual going to a Christian Rap concert is more likely to give his life to Christ through the style of music he enjoys. So don't be putting God in a box - God say's in His Word

Isaiah 55:11
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

In other Word's the Holy Spirit can move wherever, whenever and through what ever means and cause it to prosper!

Is metal music violent - It sure is
Is metal music loud - It sure is

And that is where God needs to meet some people (like myself) on my level, because He knows I would have never walked into a Church and met Him on a pulpit singing in a choir. And if we are not able to look past our own biased attitudes on music in general - believing that a certain music should be avoided - you just put God and the Holy Spirit in a box

God Bless

Atonement:

Well, this is a good testimony in itself.

Blessings.

I'm guilty of that. We should be coming out of a worship or prayer service saying, I hope God enjoyed that, instead of saying I enjoyed that, or that wasn't too good today because we didn't feel His presence. What's the old line, " I didn't get nothing out of that service".

Yeah I'm guilty of that, too. :sad It's amazing how much of the christian faith today is no longer about finding truth and serving God but about some emotional experience. Of course it's great if we get something out of a service (like encouragement, teaching, rest for our souls, fellowship... all those things are endorsed in the Bible) or enjoy worship, but our faith seems to become more like a lifestyle choice and a mental drug rather than a service. I wonder how many christians really *believe*, because I suspect many go to church only to worship their feelings and psych themselves into "feeling His presence". Our music reflects that.
If I were Satan I would make use of that shift of focus in our chruches and encourage those sensationalism-centered songs. It seems to what appeals to us modern humans and has the greatest potential to distract us from the Lord.

TomG, Where would you draw the line on rock music? What music is okay do you think, how soft? What instruments?

Excellent point about the need to find truth and serve God being the great priority (according to the Word, of course).

I don't doubt that there are Christian musicians who are promoters of Divine truth and servants of the Lord.

Blessings.

Atonement, Where would you draw the line on rock music? What music is okay do you think, how soft? What instruments?
@Art :

I can't answer for @Atonement , who can answer for himself. My answer would be really that I can't categorically answer, either; Romans 14, which is a great chapter on Christian liberty, seems strongly to stress that they will always be grey areas, and that some honest Christians will look at some things differently from other honest Christians.

Blessings.

I made a mistake, and was actually asking the question to TomG, not Atonement, but thanks for your response. A friend of mine once said there was only one person who's doctrine was 100% right. We all knew who that was. Jesus of Nazareth. The rest of us cannot be 100% right. Hopefully we all can be improving every day, but we'll never be 100% until we've passed on from these bodies in this world.

Art: YW, and you know, reading Romans 14, there are bound to be all sorts of things that honest and reasonable Christians see things from varying perspectives. Music is a particularly subjective area, although good Biblical lyrics do commend themselves, whatever the style is.

What music is okay

The music must not be aggressiv, loud, repititive or wordly in its style.
No backbeat, because this is overemphasising the rhythm of music. No drumsets, no distorted guitars.
Melody and harmony help only to express and better understand the text.
No secular attitudes, everyone must instantly recognize this as christian music.

That is good. I would enjoy that too. I also would enjoy louder music with drums and distorted guitars. You are entitled to your opinion. I'm sure Bill Cloud and you have a lot of good points on the worship and praise music you like to offer to God. I don't see your rules in the Bible though. When David hired 4000 musicians, I believe they may have gotten a little loud every now and then. David seems to have been very passionate about God. Sometimes I get so excited about Jesus I just like to shout a little, or strum my guitar loud.

Psa 150:5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

Psa 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

1Ch 23:5 Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.

Psa 150:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
Psa 150:2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
Psa 150:3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
Psa 150:4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
Psa 150:5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
Psa 150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Psa 98:4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
Psa 98:5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.
Psa 98:6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.

I've heard your opinion, and I disagree with it and so will the many thousands of people who have given their lives to Christ by attending a live Rock show.. You are in error to put the Holy Spirit in a box and suggest that metal is ungodly, and then you quote some absurd writings to make it better for your position - shame on you!

Hi Atonement! I'm reminded of the saying: there are many ways to Christ, but only one Way to God.

For you it was rock/metal music that confronted you with the claims of Christ. For others who are now believers, they might never in the past have considered or even now consider going anywhere near a Christian rock concert and think it strange that anyone else would.

Well, there are many ways for someone to arrive at the point of being challenged by the Person of Christ. This is part of the wonder and grace of the Lord's dealings with His people.

Blessings.

Where is this found in Scripture? Do you not know that the Church of Satan started by Anton Levey sung in hymns? But I suppose that music is okay though right? After all it is a hymn! And it's not loud or aggressive - However, the lyrics speak against the Church of Christ -

Let me tell you what Scriptures do tell us

Psalm 150:5 Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
Psalm 98:4 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
2 Chronicles 20:19 Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.

Again you have put God in a box and are telling others that rock music is ungodly is wrong!

Atonement: Again, this just goes to illustrate the wide, cultural (in the broadest sense) differences which exist among Christians, and yet these are not a matter of right or wrong.

Some folk from a very conservative background attribute what they learned about the Lord Jesus on their mother's knee as the essential point of testimony to them in their spiritual history, and now, in a conservative church, might find it inconceivable that some other Christians might first have been testified to by, say, a tattooed woman at a Christian rock concert.

Well, the objective aspect is not the music or dress styles, which are subjective, but rather the fact that Christ has been ministered to them and received by them in truth.

Blessings.

I can't agree with you more about this. I have seen first hand what Christ can do. Not just at rock concerts, but also on the streets. When I was in my youth we would have street rallies and go out and tell others about Christ. I would tell others who were addicted to meth or coke or those who thought it was cool to smoke weed. I would tell them how Christ has set me free from these things and how I got right with God at a rock concert. I can not begin to tell you how many people have listened to my testimony and have surrendered their lives over to Christ because of the out pouring of the Holy Spirit.

But, what if I would have just stayed home that night? What if I didn't attend that rock concert? Where would I be today? And what if I didn't go out to the streets and proclaim what Christ has done for me and through me? Where would those people be today? Some of these people I'm sure have died by now and I pray that the Word of the Lord was planted in their hearts and they repented of their sins.

But to hear someone ridicule a music genre because of their own biased attitudes on what they consider to be ungodly - is wrong! God can and will use every thing under the sun for His Glory...

After all it was my God, My Lord, My Father who created it all in the first place! I might as well praise Him through it!

Amen?

Sounds like a great testimony there! :)

Anyway, it's all covered by Romans 14 Christian liberty, I would reckon.

This is a point I've brought up a lot, and I'm too lazy to repeat myself, so I'll just share this link here: http://bluegoldwarrior12.deviantart.com/art/Christian-metalhead-stamp-292240021
Note 1: In stringed instruments we can also tell violins, celoes, guitars, basses and others *electric guitars also count *
Note 2: Modern organs *also keyboards* can imitate many instruments
Note 3: Rock music drum kits are the modern version of cymbals and tambourines . There's two kinds of tambourines, the ones without high-sounding metal plates and the ones with high-sounding metal plates. Drumkits drums were originated partially from plateless-tambourines
Note 4: the instruments mentioned in Psalm 150 are the noisiest and loudest ones from King David's times . And since heavy metal is technically "noisy music" and considering its story and instruments used in there (being "the offspring" of the noisiest/loudest instruments from King David's times *including electric basses and guitars *) we find out it's absolutely biblical
For what was said about the instruments in the link and quote above, I did do some quick attempts at fact-checking, and they seem to be correct.
Psalm 150
1Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Nowhere in the Bible does it actually say to avoid any specific kind of music.

I was raised anti-rock, and was anti-rock up until about 3 years ago. I've heard all kinds of arguments against Christian rock, and used to believe many of them.
My mind began to change when I found out that a good many of the songs by Christian artists actually have very Godly lyrics. At the time, I was especially impressed with the band Casting Crowns, which is mostly soft rock. Right now, I am rather impressed with the band Disciple, which is metal/hard rock, and their songs are about as God-centered as Casting Crowns' are.
In addition, I have had some wonderful worship experiences with contemporary, rock, and even hard rock.

I'm not at all interested in debating, really. So I've mostly tried to avoid directly addressing the points brought up in this thread.
