How moral are swear words?

I don't think they think that the word itself is obscene, just the way that it's being used like a swear word. They're also not sure about other replacement words (like "darn"), though they're not necessarily against them.

If I were to reveal that this person is one of my parents, would the same principle apply? I do try to respect her and that as long as I'm in her house, I'm supposed to abide by her rules.

No need to annoy your mom, obviously, questdriven! :)

The Isaiah 29.11 verse is kind of a general guideline, I suppose.

Sometimes, of course, one may intend to exclaim one word and suddenly a slightly different one comes out. Maybe this is the kind of thing your mom would be anxious about, also.

Blessings.

I agree with Rachel. I would't personally have a problem with it, especially if someone is trying not to swear anymore but I couldn't visualize Jesus talking that way.

E: Maybe not that word, but He did call Herod 'that fox' (Luke 13.32).

I think He said "generation of vipers" to the pharisees, too. That's like saying "son of a snake", which is similar to...another phrase....yeah.
He had authority to do so, though, as He knew the thoughts and intentions of people's hearts. And he wasn't swearing, but berating them.

I guess I consider phrases that don't use actual swear words like "what the flip" a harmless expression, even if it's not a logical statement. I could definitely see how in some cases that it might be best to avoid them at all, such as around kids in case their parents might not appreciate it. Or around people who do consider it wrong. Or maybe even just to be on the safe side.

I made my mom laugh one time by exclaiming "what the cream cheese!" :)

questdriven:

Hard to be too critical of someone who makes you laugh... :)

Rachel:

Would you have any particular thoughts as well on the matter of the hard rock aesthetic, discussed a little, above? in relation to exclamations (as opposed to bad language, of course).

Blessings.

What if someone were to say, "what the flip?" Basically, swearing without actually swearing? What are your opinions on that?
Personally I'm not against that. I'm just curious what people think.
Again, depends on the emotions and mood of the person say it. And in that exact quote, it's obvious what they're thinking. Kinda like the stupid phrase that Tim Allen has made popular on his recently cancelled TV show: "Back the truck up ... " Way too close for government work.

Not really at the moment because I don't like hard rock so I don't listen to it, so I do not have a good idea in my head what you are talking about. If I listened to more I could give you my thoughts but I really don't want to listen to any.

Rachel: Okay, fine; and thanks for your honesty. :)

I swear by the moon and the star in the sky
And I swear like the shadow that's by your side
I see the questions in your eyes
I know what's weighing on your mind
You can be sure I know my part
‘Cause I'll stand beside you through the years
You'll only cry those happy tears
And though I'll make mistakes
I'll never break your heart
And I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky
I'll be there
I swear like the shadow that's by your side
I'll be there
For better or worse till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
And I'll swear
Uhh, uuh, uhh
I'll give you everything I can
I'll build your dreams with these two hands
We'll hang some memories on the walls
Awesome Boyz II Men Resources
And when just the two of us are there
You won’t have to ask if I still care
‘Cause as the time turns the page
My love won't age at all
And I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky
I'll be there
I swear
Like the shadow that’s by your side
I'll be there
For better or worse, till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
I swear
I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky
I'll be there
I swear
Like the shadow that’s by your side
I'll be there
For better or worse, till death do us part
I'll love you with every single beat of my heart
I swear, uhh

On my honour I promise that I will do my best—
To do my duty to God and the King (or to God and my Country)
To help other people at all times and
To obey the Scout Law.

Didn't go beyond cub scouts. Afraid of bears.:shocked!

Of course, swearing is understood in more than one way. For example an oath or affirmation in court. Or else, in contrast, obscenity. They are very different ways of using the word.

Boy scout motto is pretty moral swearing. I am much better with not cursing. Only when I drop something can I not stop myself.

Unfortunately I swear at roaches....<.<...they drive me bananas.

Actually most of the words don't have meaning... They are just slangs introduced by some bunch of jokers like that. If I may ask, what are the exact meaning of some of the words??? Clueless!!! Some will end up saying: used for emphasis

Some say they can be an expression of anger.
