How moral are swear words?

...maybe not as soft as 'flip', then.

Maybe this is what your mom means, then?

Blessings.
Yeah, she does think it might lead to actual swearing.
I don't do it in front of people, but I will admit that in private I tend to use actual words. If anyone's there to hear me, I automatically defer to more acceptable words.

It's a bad habit that's hard to get rid of.

I think there was another strong word beginning with 'f' that you alluded to, but of which you gave a sanitized version. My guess is that she doesn't like it at all.

She's not vehemently against me saying things like "flip", but, yeah, she doesn't like it. I don't use the actual word, though.

questdriven: No, that other word is pretty strong, isn't it, and would be regarded as obscene.

A good chapter to read from the Bible is Philippians 4. Paul speaks of prayer, thankfulness and rejoicing; and specifies various things to occupy our minds with: 'think on these things': Philippians 4.8.

I think such an occupation can have a purifying effect on our speech.

Blessings.

True. :)

I do think that using words that aren't actually swear words actually can help, if you train yourself to use those instead. It certainly would be better than actual swearing, in any case.

Like, positively trying to say 'flip'?

Blessings.

I guess. :chin
I mainly meant, though, that it be a good way to stop using actual swear words, by making yourself say the alternate version instead. It may depend on the situation and the person, I suppose.

So, like, 'flip' would be one that you would prefer to try to use; any others come to mind, particularly?

Blessings.

Other words I would use include "darn", "dang", "shoot", "crap", "crud", "heck", "freak", "frick", etc.

I used to watch Battlestar Galactica and they replaced the f word with a similar f word for tv. I think it's more your intent like if you catch yourself and switch to darn it would be better than yelling darn if you stubbed your toe because it's ok.

My question would be, what would make the latter wrong?

I'm sorry, I hate sounding argumentative or like I'm on the defensive. :sad That's not my intention here.

I guess because you'd be using it the same as a swear. On that show it's not like they are trying to tame the word they just wanted to swear without swearing. It's just my opinion and I think there are much more important things than how often you say darn.

I used to work in a school for the emotionally and behaviourally disturbed children. I regret to say that things were so bad, that they simply would not respond unless some expletive was included in the sentences.

However, is this filthy communication?

Mafia boss: 'Go kill him'

Boss to accountant: 'Fix those books, willya?'

If that's the only language they understand...then it is ok
