How the Law and the Commandments Promotes Sin

I suppose that everyone will think that I have lost it.

Before you write me off as a nut case, please read the scripture that I have posted.

"But sin taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence (Lust). For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died" Romans 7:8-9.

This is why Jesus abolished the law by nailing it to his cross, Colossians 2:14. Righteousness does not come by trying to keep the law and the commandments. Under the New Covenant righteousness is by faith, faith in Christ and his Gospel. God never intended for his people to live by laws, rules and commandments. This is why Paul said, "The just shall live by faith" Romans 1:17.

Paul wrote, "Knowing this, that the law was not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient." 1 Timothy 1:9. If you are lawless and disobedient then the law is for you. Christians are not Pharisees, they are led, guided, and taught by the Holy Spirt, John 16:13-14.

This is not a very popular article. Many want to believe that they can please God by keeping the law and the commandments, just like the Pharisees believed. The law and the commandments do NOT make one righteous. Under the New Covenant righteousness is by faith, Romans 4:3. Trying to keep the law and the commandments will make one a hypocrite. In the 23rd chapter of Matthew Jesus referred to the Pharisees as hypocrites seven times. The Pharisees were professional religionist, they even tithed down to the mint in their Gardens, Matthew 23:23. If anyone would ever be saved by keeping the law, it would be the Pharisees.

Why would anyone write you off as a nut case when you are clearly writing Biblical truth? It is only those who are deceived by Satan who would think you are nuts.

We have the same Spirit. There are not many on these Christian Forums that agree with the scriptures.
It just baffles me that, when the New Covenant is entirely about being governed by the internal Holy Spirit, that people still cling to external rules and regulations to guide their behavior. Over and over, the New Testament says that Jesus died to free us from being controlled by the law. Why do people who call themselves "Christians" adopt the law-based, Old Covenant religion of the Jews?

It is because they love their religion more than they love Jesus. The have made the law and their religion their Jesus.

If you walk according to the leading of the Holy Spirit, to obey Him then you can expect to receive from the Spirit eternal life.

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8

To walk in the Spirit is to walk in the Gospel. In the Gospel there is not much concern about sin, because we are already perfect and complete in Christ, Colossians 2:10.

The Gospel is how we become born again, reborn of the Spirit, in which our spirit is now compatible with the Holy Spirit.

Once we have the Holy Spirit within us, we can now be “led” by the Holy Spirit, rather than being led by the sinful impulses of our flesh.

Each born again Christian must make the choice each and everyday to walk according to the Spirit, rather than practicing the works of the flesh.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:16-21

  • that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Christians who do not walk according to the Spirit, will end up walking in the flesh and practicing the works of the flesh.

Walking in the Gospel is the same as walking in the Spirit. In the Gospel we are already complete in Christ, Colossians 2:10. We cannot make ourselves any better than what we are in Jesus Christ.

Walking in the Gospel is the same as walking in the Spirit.

Sorry but we believe and therefore obey the Gospel and are born again.

Then we can walk according to the Spirit.

No such thing as walking in the Gospel.

In the Gospel we are already complete in Christ, Colossians 2:10. We cannot make ourselves any better than what we are in Jesus Christ.

Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. Colossians 2:4-10

”In Him” we are blessed and are established, so that we become fruitful. This is why Jesus warned us to remain “in Him”.

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:6

As we can see, Jesus told us that we must remain in Him.

Here is how this same John instructs us to remain in Christ.

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24

All that have come to Christ as repentant sinners to be saved by him are in Christ. They are sealed with the Holy Spirit and are eternally saved. There is no unsealing, Ephesians 1:13. Once sealed always sealed. When God sees them in Christ he gives them the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit working in their lives that will produce good works and the Christian life, Ephesians 2:10. It is all of God.

Under the New Covenant the law has been abolished, Ephesians 2:15. Jesus nailed it to his cross, Colossians 2:14. God now sees his people as perfect and complete in Christ, Colossians 2:10. Because we are complete in Christ there is reason to try to be holy. This is why you need to cease from your works and enter into his rest, Hebrews 4:10.

A child, whether a young person (chronologically) or a young Christian (spiritually) most probably needs instruction with the expressed goal of educating/training them to be able to function on their own. It is a sign of failure when a person, after a suitable period of time, is unable to function independently but still requires external direction (commands and orders).

"Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental principles? How can you want to be enslaved to them again?" Galatians 4:8-10

All that have come to Christ as repentant sinners to be saved by him are in Christ.

Amen. I agree.

Once we are in Christ, we must heed His admonition to remain in Him.

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:6

  • Here is how we are instructed to remain in Christ —

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24

Keeping His commandments are the way of Love; loving God and loving our brother.

His commandments are not burdensome.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

If we are to walk in love, then we must keep His commandments.

The early church had a very big problem when Jewish and gentile believers first worshipped together. Whether to keep the law was a big issue, which the Apostles set up guidelines for. They didn't oppose Jewish believers keeping the law, as long as they understood salvation comes from the humble heart before our Lord, as the law proves all have sinned.
The gospel shows us how Christ nailed the law to his cross, by not using it against those who murdered him.
In the sermon on the mount, our gentle Lord taught the law from the perspective that we should keep the law in love for God, by forgiving others as God loved us.
Also, to love mankind as we do ourselves, as we all need mercy. This way, we are observant of the law, as Jesus is.

Amen. I agree.

Why God command things knowing no one will be able fellow?

The law was not given to make one righteous. Paul said, "By the law is the knowledge of sin" Romans 3:20.

The purpose of the law is to convict of sin and to bring us to Christ, Galatians 3:24. The law also reveals the righteousness of God. Jesus was the only one qualified to teach the law, all of the others were hypocrites.

Would you please identify others?
