MITTERFIRMIANSREUT, Germany -- A church built entirely of ice and snow has opened in Bavaria – a century after villagers first built a snow church in an act of protest.
The church at Mitterfirmiansreut, near the Czech border, is more than 20 meters (65 feet) in length and boasts a tower. It's made up of some 1,400 cubic meters (49,000 cubic feet) of snow.
The structure was bathed in blue light as it opened Wednesday evening with a blessing from Dean Kajetan Steinbeisser.
But when the ancestors of today's villagers built the first snow church in 1911, they weren't thinking just of architectural achievement.
Steinbeisser says: "It was meant as an act of provocation – believers from the village got together and built a snow church because they didn't have a church here."

Remarkable picture!

(Feels rather cold, though.... :) )

Wow that's amazing. I would have travellled there to take a look at it if it was a bit closer.
I bet they don't have a heating in there. :lol

:) Well, I'm not sure she would like the Canadian winter, but anyway...

Never been there, so I have no idea if i'd like it. Another canadian internet friend of mine has shown me pictures that looked pretty awesome though.
Stuff like this:

It is aesthetic. Not helpfull or practical, but aesthetic.
I'd love the Canadian east coast winter!

Well, okay!

Do you remember Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien? (served 1993-2003). He had Bell's palsy as a young man, brought on by the extreme cold in Quebec, which left his face a little disfigured (he actually used it to good effect in an election ad, when his opponent Kim Campbell's office appeared to be criticizing it.)

Anyway, the Canadian winter can be cooooooold......

It's been rather nice here the last few days but if the forecast holds true, things are about the change. Starting tonight, we are expecting anywhere from 5-10 inches (12.5cm - 25.5cm) by Tuesday morning. This time they say it should be heavy sticky snow.
