The people of Israel didn't actually mean to kill every man and woman that ever had sex before right? Just the ones that were unmarried I suppose. My Message Bible doesn't specifically state it one way or the other so I'm not sure.

Use a different version. The message bible tends to water things down a bit. Try reading through the NASB, or KJV as a cross-reference to understand the translations.

I can't because those versions are way too difficult for me to read and understand.

You can also look for commentaries on the passages you are studying, as well as look through these during a small group bible study. You will be able to get insights from other people, then test that against what you know from the bible.

The message, much like the KJV is more thought for thought andf you must never have read the text of an NASB because it is translated into English using the oldest manuscripts, the Dead Sea scrolls and is as close as a Word for word translation into English has gotten and it reads as easily as a Bat Man Comic Book.

What book chapter and verse are you reading? I know that it's got to be the Old Testament. Nothing like that in the New.

It was the end of Judges I know that. Sorry, I don't have my Bible with me anymore, but I can look it up for you specifically if you want me to.

Those stories are told because the people of Israel couldn't get it together as to how to behave. They didn't do as God told them even in stamping out wickedness. And they were rather barbaric. Granted they were well disciplined when they took the Promised Land...but they didn't stick to it.

The GOD’S WORD Translation (GW) was especially written to do away with that excuse.

Compare this rather "different" verse:
Luke 14:26 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
26 “If people come to me and are not ready to abandon their fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as their own lives, they cannot be my disciples.

Look, when all is said and done does it really matter what version of the Bible I like to choose to read? They all basically mean the same thing anyway just translated differently. It's better than choosing not to read it at all.

I've known some Bible translators that say GW is really good from a scholarly standpoint. I didn't realize it was designed to be easy reading too, that seems like quite the accomplishment. It's on biblegateway.

But yes we do need specific statement from Judges to try to make sense out of it. Some of the most horrific stuff in all of Scripture is in that book, I hope you've at least read through the NT before tackling that?

HeIsRisen2018, try downloading esword on your computer. You will be able to download multiple different translations and put them side-by-side for comparison. The software is free, some of the version may cost some money, but the more popular translations are free and pretty easy to use.

Biblegateway.org lets you do that too, and they have many modern translations including GW, NASB and MSG (The Message)

I think it's important to read the Bible through at least once while recognizing we don't really get it. Just get it in us, where the Holy Spirit can use it. Later we can gain more understanding, and comparing different versions is one very useful way of studying.

Actually, if you prefer the Message, it matters. I have never looked into the Message but the reported errors of that version scare me and Rick Warren, the chief proponet of the Message has serious Foundational problems with his theology that the Message, apparently, supports. He has said, on the TV that there are many paths to Heaveen and that is a lie. His pushing of the Message combined with this heresy, certainly turned me off of the Message. Having never read it, I am not qualified to measure the accuracy of that version but a huge number of people that have, have rejected it, saying it is not an accurate translation.

footnote: You can download, for free, a Bible Study program used by many Pastors and when all of the Bibles that are available at zero cost is easily available,it is worth at least $600. And for twenty a number of copyrighted versions are available, you should check it out at www.e-sword.net

I already stated more than once I'm fine with what I'm reading now. I was going to ignore it but if saying yes I don't want it will make it finally stop then yes please with all due respect. I read what I want and what I'm capable of reading.
