I am 32-years-old and not getting any younger and I am so sick and tired of being the failure that I am. I'm NOT asking to be the next Bill Gates or Donald Trump in the money department, but I sure don't want to spend the next 20+ years wondering how will I ever afford to feed my children. And I have no idea of what to do or where to turn. I am extremely frustrated right now about this. Is there any hope for me? What should I do? And please don't waste my time with sunday school answers like "pray about it", or "God will provide your needs", or "God will lead you to the right career choice", etc. I need real answers that will get me real results.

Hello jahjahwarrior. I meant to respond to you sooner, but we've had site issues.

I enjoyed reading your post. It made sense. I can relate to it in many ways.

You're not a failure. You're young man struggling in this fallen world. You're not alone. Everyone has, or will be, in your situation. Frustrated. Discouraged; thinking there is no hope.

I got married soon after high school. My wife and I both went to collage and worked. I worked construction for $8/hr. Went to class at night. My wife studied journalism and worked as an intern for a local paper. We did not make squat. Between the two of us I think we brought home $250 a week.

This was back in the 80's. Our rent was $290/month and we drove paid for cars. Eventually I started a little business. It took off pretty well and I decided to put school on hold for a while. Soon I was making some money. I bought a house and new cars, furniture, toys, eating out, travel. By 1990 I was grossing over $250K a year. I was also lost. I did not know Christ.

I found a way to do some creative accounting and sipon more money out of my business to feed my growing appetite for useless STUFF; things I thought I needed. Things my young wife also wanted. Neither of us where Christians. We where young, in our 20's making more money than most people in their 40's or 50's and we where not satisfied.

Eventually it all came crashing down. I was in trouble with the IRS. I filed bankruptcy. My wife and I fought constantly and that relationship ended. But, I found God, or I should say He found me. Alone, frustrated, hopeless; just like you but far richer.

I'm not trying to compare situations with you, but I want to give you some hope in saying that your hope is in Jesus Christ alone, my brother.

All these things you think you need; all these plans you think you have to make ...you really don't. That's not God talking to you, that's just this fallen world talking to you. Trouble is you're listening to it. The world is telling you to look at others and what they have and how their so much better off and if you want to be like them you need to make more money and go to school and all that. It's not true.

With the spirit of God, I learned to let go. I learned to surrender, and I learned that I don't make of the future; God does. He guides me. He sends me where he needs me. He directs me, and He has plans to prosper me beyond anything I can possibly imagine. He has the same plans for you, if you can just let Go and trust in Him.

My friend, I am 47. I am married to a woman I truly love. We have two beautiful little girls. I have a great job, a home. All the things you want and I did not plan one bit of it. None of it.

After I meet God, I started working as a truck driver. I went from 6 figures to about 37K. Eventually I was asked to teach others how to drive big rigs. LOL. I went back to school and finished my education. I lived in little apartments and ate mac-n-cheese, drove crummy cars LOL. Eventually I started working in higher paying jobs. I changed jobs. I was a director of operations, then finally started working in freight brokerage where I am today.

But along the way I meet other Christians, and eventually the one I was meant to marry. I struggled, don't get me wrong. I asked God why many times, but He gave me strength, guidance, direction, hope and patients. I did not know it then, but He was shaping me, building me, molding me, and for Him to do that I had to let Him.

You want real answers with real results? I just gave it to you. If you need anything. You let me know, but let God know first.

Bless you brother. You are not a failure. Let Christ show you that.

I know this is obvious, but don't have children until you know you can pay for them!

I am getting my degree at an online school. Maybe online college will work for you? Do you know what the FAFSA is? They may give you free money for college! After you work during the day, you can study one class at a time until you get where you want to be. Try to make the best of your situation. If you need a smaller apartment, get one! My husband and I (and my chihuahua) live in a one bedroom apartment and we're just fine!

If a car is too expensive, you could take the bus sometimes? We don't have a car and take the bus everywhere. It's not too bad.

I will pray that your situation works out!

There are many themes in this OP, and I got to wonder if this should be moved to the men's section because when I read the OP, I can't help but think of how God works on ordinary men.

I don't want to make this into a sexist thing. There are many great women of the bible, and women who are great leaders, but for example, I see a lot about Moses in the OP.

Moses thought he was a failure, but God called him anyway. He not only called him He never let Moses off the hook. He forced him to see just what God could do with him. He did not do this for Moses glory, but for Gods glory.

God placed a righteous disturbance within Moses and Moses tried to talk himself out of it. He told God he was a failure, and he did not have certain skills, or resources and he came up with all sorts of excuses of why he could not do what God wanted him to do.

11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
..................................
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
.....................................
4 Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”
.........................................
10 Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
.......................................
13 But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”

In all these cases God told Moses he would be with him and He tried to convince Moses, yet excuse after excuse after excuses Moses gave for not trusting in God. I's funny to me how many Christians do the same thing today. "better play it safe, the worldly way. Make sure you have plenty of money and resources and skills or you just won't make it." That's exactly what Moses and many others thought because they feared failure in their name, not understanding that God is with them and the glory of their success is not theirs to being, but in Gods name.

If we are going to identify ourselves as "Christian" by our names, why do we worry about this world and think we can't be a success if God is with us?

But God I don't have enough money, But God I don't take test well, I'm not very educated, what will others think of me? ........

I know exactly how you feel. Shake that loser feeling and make a plan. I too, wasted my student loan on a dead end career path. Worse than you did! BUT! All is not lost. My best advice? Hang out a shingle. Go into business for yourself. My dad told me long ago, that even a bad business is better than a good job. Almost 30 years later, I can not say that was wrong in the least.

Don't listen to people who tell you that you need 50K in the bank to go into business for yourself. I did it on a shoestring and am still here. Many of my colleagues have done the same, and are already out of business. Why? They bit off more than they can chew. Do not, I repeat DO NOT use credit. Pay cash as you go along. Growth is slower but you will be more secure. Do not extend credit to first time customers. Many people get rich off of working the little guys and cheating them out of money for every little minor complaint imaginable. Do not make that mistake. My experience has been that poor struggling folks are more honorable than doctors and lawyers! They will dangle a carrot in front of you with the promise of lots more work for credit now, or a better price now...and you eat it in the end. Don't be afraid to say no.

I've walked away from a 1.2 million dollar contract do do a 54 unit complex (HVAC). I was offered the chance to bid, and stated in the proposal that I am 1/2 down, 1/2 on completion. I won! Sign here! Uh-oh. That contract was a book. Oh, formalities, just sign, everything will be ok...I said hey, let me sleep on it and read it over tonight. The fine print abandoned my 1/2 1/2 pay system. It asked for my application for payment, breakdown of everything and all sorts of gobble-de-gook. It required me to carry the material. We met at the supply house to discuss credit with them so I would be able to do it. With their credit reference, I could sign up and receive up to 100K credit at a time. They would send a joint check to the supply house. Hmm. I cut right to the chase. What if they DON'T pay? Do you go after them or me? Oh you Ed...No thanks. I walked. One of my friends and colleagues took the job. He's out of business now. They didn't pay, for a loooong time. Too long. He did get his money for the first 4 units in the end, but wished he had never taken the contract. It ruined him. I'm still here. Be smart.

Start part time. Be honest with your day job. I'm married, I can't afford to not do side work, I have a family. I was respected for the honesty and allowed to keep my day job at first, until I got busy enough to go full time on my own. Go into business for yourself. You'll work less but make more when you do work. Commercial insurance isn't as much as you would think. Good luck.

Really good advice and it is most inspirational to me.

one can NOT rely on a bus to get one to work here in a timely manner. I would have to leave at least an hour early. for all that hassle. just get a bike and ride. its only twenty minutes to work via car or bike.i drive anyway.

it has been a struggle to earn over $300 weekly of take home pay.

Just be glad you have a job. That's the first thing, being thankful. There's always someone that has it worse than the other so..do you believe in eternal life after this one? When I'm struggling I always think about God's plans for me AFTER this life. I dunno. I hope I helped.

12 years ago, I graduated from U.T.I. (Universal Technical Institute) with a degree in automotive. I originally gained an interest in the automotive industry when I took the automotive class at BOCES while in high school when my area representative for UTI visited our BOCES center and filled the young kids' heads with lies and fantasies about how they can make lots 'n' lots of money overnight "if they go to UTI!" And being the young and dumb naïve kid I was at the time, I fell for all the hype. 12 years after getting my degree, I am still paying off student loans for that school (just under $7,000 of debt remaining) and I am realizing just how much of a joke my career as an automotive technician really is. Every shop and dealer I have worked at since has either fired me because I was not learning fast enough to satisfy them or they were just satisfied with leaving me at a mediocre position where I just barely squeak by in life doing crap jobs that don't pay much of anything. Right now, I should be a master tech who can diagnose anything, but I am barely a mid-level if that and I have yet to make $40,000 in one year. I got married almost a year ago, and ever since I put my wife on my health care plan, it has been a struggle to earn over $300 weekly of take home pay. And yet we want to buy a house and have kids even though we can barely afford the rent on our 2 bedroom apartment with no kids. And needless to say that my wife someday being a stay-at-home mom is out of the question which will cause other Christians to look down on me as a "dead beat" because of the income I make (or the lack thereof). I don't hate the work I do, but the pay I make now in this economy will definitely leave my wife and I in poverty once we eventually have kids, and I don't see my career ever getting any better. I feel like I have wasted the last 14 years of my life on a career that is getting me nowhere. I need to change careers if there will ever be any hope of a financial future for my family, but the only way that'll happen is if I go back to school. But there are a few problems with that. #1; I still need my job just to survive, #2; I've never been good with academics and test taking (which is the #1 reason why I'm a failure in the first place), and #3; the only way I can afford to go back to school now is to take on more student loans which I can't do because "Dave Ramsey wouldn't do that!!!":naughty I am 32-years-old and not getting any younger and I am so sick and tired of being the failure that I am. Join the club, friend. I have a bachelor's degree in accounting, and haven't yet landed a job over $32,000. My GPA was 3.6/4.0 and I was active extra-curricularly. I'm also married, my wife works very hard, and between us 2, we barely eat. I have a step-son and step-daughter who are becoming frustrated. I am not 32. I am 38.

I'm a failure too. But guess what? I still stand firm in my faith. If I were in my present situation at 32 years of age, I might not stand firm. If I were in yours at 32, I might have been a little proud (probably was anyway). My point is this: millions of folks (actually billions) are a lot worse off. Half the world population is impoverished--by every standard. 1 in 6 are at least nearly starving. People like you and me can't complain, but must beg God to help us to never forget what poverty is like, and working together to reduce poverty everywhere.

God has a prosperous plan for you brother!

Would becoming more specialized in the same field help? What about becoming a diesel engine technician? I see job growth for that is about 15% for the next 8 years. If that's the case you may end up with options work at a place you like better. With regard to student loan debt, I think it is a fantastic investment decision. The "no debt ever" folks are not in your shoes.

Hi Jahjhawarrior.

First of all, you're not a failure; you are a person that Jesus loved enough to die for. Secondly, having no money doesn't make you a dead beat. God chose the family of Joseph, a poor carpenter, to care for His son as a baby. There were plenty of rich, successful people in Israel at the time, but God didn't choose them. Jesus never had any money of His own, except perhaps what he made as a carpenter before He began His ministry.

If you'd like to take courses to improve your career, there are plenty of free ones available. Several of the universities now offer free courses online; I know Texas university is one of them; I think MIT may also do this. Also check out www.coursera.org. They have a huge range of free online courses on lots of different subjects. It may be time to evaluate yourself - what are you good at? What interests you? You're young enough to make a new career path for yourself if that's what you feel you need.

Lastly, if you are seriously depressed, have you seen a doctor about it? Depression can change your body chemistry to where it becomes a physical illness; impossible to just 'snap out of it' when it gets to that stage.

Praying for you!
