When we called the local vets here, they just couldn't seem to get her in during the evening and we don't have a 24 hour emergency vet here, unfortunately. They said they could've gotten her in this afternoon, but because my husband has missed enough work because of my medical issues, he can't.
So, the vets here gave us phone numbers for 24 hour vets 1 1/2 hours away from us. We eventually found one that said they could take us around 11 p.m. so we were there by then, but I guess they had another pet come in that was more critical or it was because they were discharging a few pets. They didn't get our cat back until after midnight so we waited for a while by the front doors. We went back and forth between gas stops to use the bathroom and grab coffee while we waited. They discharged her at a little after 4 a.m.
Our cat has subcutaneous emphysema, which is air under the skin from usually being impaled by an object or blunt force trauma, usually. It causes a rice krispy kind of crackling under the skin. It's pretty rare and usually doesn't happen in cats. Could've been a fall, a dog trying to hurt her, a person kicking her, being hit by a bike, etc. we don't know what happened when she slipped outside but it really seems like someone intentionally hurt her. She also has an injured back foot - an injury that broke skin and has dried blood on it. She also has a lot of inflammation in her wind pipe/trachea area and around her lungs. She has an injured shoulder where they think was where the initial injury happened that aggravated her lungs and such. Thankfully, they don't see any broken bones.
They wanted to keep her over night and that sounded great and everything, but that was quoted at like $2,600. I can't afford that at all so...they came up with plan B, which was like $1,000...still really a no go. Because my husband had to go to work in a few hours from then, we asked if they could give her the necessary medications like the antibiotic and such and we take her home and phone them back if there are any problems. They went ahead and did that so they discharged her and sent her home with anti-inflammatories, heavy duty pain killers, and they had already given her an injection for like a 14 day antibiotic - yikes. A lot of heavy medications for the poor cat.
We got home at like 5:30 a.m. this morning. My husband had to get ready for work at 6:20 a.m. He asked me to stay awake, but I must've nodded off after I checked the time at 6:15 a.m. I woke up again at 7:30 a.m. and rushed to wake him up and he was nearly late. I feel like such a terrible wife
Our cat has been doing well with the anti-inflammatories and pain killers. She's eating more comfortable and drinking water better. She was pretty alert after picking her up from the vet and at home she's still been resting a lot, but doesn't seem to be in so much pain.
Although, the vet's office called today saying they were checking up on our cat and making sure everything was going well. I was thrilled to fill them in that things seem to be going great - no worsening problems. Then, they said, "Oh, we forgot to fill you in on this last night, but your cat bit one of the vet tech's and unfortunately, we do have to report this to the Department of Health." I was very apologetic and wished their vet tech well because I feel terrible that happened to someone. They just kept telling me, "Oh, don't worry too much about it. This kind of stuff just happens. We're not like saying that it's all your cat's fault or blaming you for it. We understand that she was stressed, injured, and scared when we were trying to get a look at her." They told me I might be getting a call on the phone from the Department of Health...I don't know what to expect there. Hopefully it's just to ask for proof of rabies vaccination or something. I feel bad that happened to someone
