13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Paul clarifies the misunderstanding that many have about this subject.
- 13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.
Those who have fallen asleep, is a reference to those who are in Christ that have died.
Now comes the clarification.
- 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
Look at the language here: ... even so God will
bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus
Unmistakable. The saints who have died, are
coming with Jesus, from heaven when He returns.
Those who have died in Christ, have gone to heaven, and their bodies and in the earth, awaiting His return.
Heaven's perspective on this matter -
11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And
the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Revelation 19:11-15
Key Verse: And the armies
in heaven,
clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
The armies
in heaven includes the Church, His bride; The saints who are in Heaven.
7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” 8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright,
for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Revelation 19:7-8
The saints who are in heaven, return with Jesus at the end of the age, as the scriptures teach.
The spirits of these saints are not "asleep" in the ground.
13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?” 14 And I said to him, “Sir, you know.”So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them. Revelation 7:13-15
- “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?”
- “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
- Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple.
Again, the saints come with Jesus from Heaven when He returns.
14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold,
the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, Jude 14
- the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints
Thus the Lord my God will come, and all the saints with You. Zechariah 14:5
- and all the saints with You
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 4:14
- even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus
